Notes: Abstract We study the energy spectrum of Bi2223 (Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr1.8Ca2.2Cu3Ox) at high hydrostatic pressures by Andreev-and tunneling-spectroscopy methods. We determine the gap anisotropy in the basal ab plane and find the following values for the parameters Δ(ϕ): Δmax=42 mV, and Δmin=19.5 mV (T c =110 K and dT c /dP=0.16 K/kbar). We detect an increase in the ratio R=2Δmax/kT c with pressure P; for Bi2223 cuprate, dR/dP≈0.017 kbar−1. In the phonon-frequency region we detect a “softening,” due to pressure, of the high-frequency part of the phonon spectrum corresponding to “breathing” modes of oxygen, as well as other optical modes of Cu-O. The characteristic frequencies of the spectrum for ℏΩ〉60 mV are found to decrease, with increasing pressure, at a rate d ln(ℏΩ)/dP≈−6.5±0.5×10−3 kbar−1. This result explains the observed increase in the ratio 2Δ/kT c (P) in the model of strong electron-phonon interaction.

Notes: We have studied stable structures of hydrogenated Si clusters grown from silane gas in an ion trap developed for cluster growth. The grown clusters were extracted from the ion trap through two different pathways and were analyzed by mass spectrometers. The Si6Hx+ cations were stably grown, among them clusters with x=1, 7, and 13 were always observed, regardless of the growth conditions or the extraction pathways. The stable structures of these clusters were theoretically investigated. Clusters of x=1, 7, and 13 corresponded to the compact structure, the intermediate structure which has both compact and bulklike configurations, and the bulklike sp3 structure, respectively. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We examined 42 herpes gestationis sera with immunofluorescence of normal human skin sections, and found that anti-keratinocyte cell surface antibodies were detected specifically in 10 herpes gestationis sera. The diagnosis of these herpes gestationis cases was confirmed by detecting antibodies against the 180 kD bullous pemphigoid antigen with immunoblotting of its fusion protein. The results of immunoadsorption assay using baculoproteins of both pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus antigens indicated that the herpes gestalionis sera did not recognize common pemphigus antigens. Immunoblotting of human epidermal extracts and immunofluorescence of various tissues also suggested that the sera did not recognize any other desmosomal components or paraneoplastic pemphigus antigens. The significance of this reactivity is unclear. However, because no control bullous pemphigoid sera showed this reactivity, it may suggest a different pathophysiology between herpes gestationis and bullous pemphigoid.

Notes: Abstract: Microcomputed tomography allows the true three-dimensional structure of bone to be assessed by a nondestructive analysis. This article describes how this technique has for the first time been applied to rat bone to determine the effects of aging, ovariectomy, and antiresorptive drugs on bone structure and how these results compare with those determined by histological and histomorphometric techniques. During the procedure, a micro X-ray source is directed toward the bone sample. Modifications in the X-ray beam induced by bone crystals are determined for a range of acquisitions before three-dimensional reconstruction of bone architecture is performed. Morphometric parameters determined were trabecular bone volume/tissue volume, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness. The results show that ovariectomy has a dramatic effect on rat bone structure. Following treatment with the bone resorption inhibitor tiludronate, the morphometric parameters were significantly improved. The results obtained with three-dimensional microcomputed tomography were in agreement with observations made using classical techniques. Microcomputed tomography should prove useful for evaluating the antiresorptive effects of bisphosphon-ates on bone architecture and in allowing between-drug comparisons.

Notes: Abstract: We have measured the dissociation of 8B in the Coulomb field of 208Pb at Ein=51.9 MeV/nucleon and extracted the cross section of the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction at 0.4 ≤ Erel≤ 3 MeV, which is of importance for the 8B solar-neutrino production rate. The extracted astrophysical S17 factors are consistent with our earlier Coulomb dissociation measurement, and agree with the values deduced from the direct capture measurements by Filippone et al., Vaughn et al. and Hammache et al. The S factor at zero energy was extracted to be 18.9±1.8 eV-b with the help of theoretical energy-dependence.

Notes: Abstract  The prognostic value of morphological classifications and clinical variables was compared between 31 elderly (≥65 years) and 43 young (〈65 years) patients with myeloma. Prognostic factors were divided into three groups: factors useful in elderly patients, e.g., calcium, albumin; factors useful in young patients, e.g., platelet, creatinine, light-chain type; and factors useful in both patients, e.g., clinical stage, hemoglobin, LDH, CRP, bone marrow plasma cell and plasmablast percentages, light- and electron-microscopic classifications. The 5-year survival rates of elderly patients with calcium 〈12 and ≥12 mg/dl were 66.2 and 〈11.1%, respectively (p〈0.01). Those of the young patients were 64.1 and 33.3%, respectively. The 5-year survival rates of elderly patients with platelets ≥200×109/l and 〈100×109/l were 59.7 and 50.0%, respectively. Those of the young patients were 68.9 and 33.3%, respectively (p〈0.05). The 5-year survival rates of elderly patients with few and numerous electron-microscopic abnormalities were 90 and 0%, respectively (p〈0.01), those of young patients were 92.9 and 〈14.3%, respectively (p〈0.01). These findings suggest that individual clinical variables may differ in prognostic importance in elderly and young patients.

Notes: Abstract  We report a patient with primary nonsecretory plasma cell leukemia. These cells resembled prolymphocytes and expressed only CD38 and CD56. Due to the atypical morphology and lack of monoclonal immunoglobulins in both serum and urine, it was difficult to make a correct diagnosis. Electron-microscopic and immunocytochemical cytoplasmic studies were useful.

Notes: Abstract  Myeloma cells were ultrastructurally analyzed in relation to survival in 54 patients with myeloma who were treated with melphalan-prednisolone or cyclophosphamide-prednisolone. Since previous studies by electron microscope had demonstrated that the degree of nuclear-cytoplasmic asynchrony of myeloma cells was associated with poor prognosis, this study focused on three kinds of nuclear abnormalities and eight kinds of cytoplasmic abnormalities. The patients were classified into three groups according to the presence of these abnormalities. The median survival times of the first group with five or fewer of 11 different kinds of abnormalities, the second group with 6–8 abnormalities, and the third group with nine or more abnormalities were 2353, 531, and 115 days, respectively. Furthermore, this classification by ultrastructural abnormalities corresponded to those by the initial hemoglobin concentrations, platelet counts, and percentages of myeloma cells and plasmablasts in the bone marrow. These findings suggest that ultrastructural analysis of nuclear and cytoplasmic abnormalities, in addition to nuclear maturity, of myeloma cells may provide important information for predicting the prognosis in myeloma patients.

Notes: Abstract. The positron lifetime of undoped Liquid-Encapsulated Czochralski (LEC)-GaAs and Si-doped (1.3×1018 cm−3) LEC-GaAs was measured before and after irradiation with protons (dose 1×1015/cm2, 15 MeV). In Si-doped GaAs, the decrease of positron lifetime at temperatures between 10 and 300 K are due to the decrease of the positron-diffusion length and the increase of the effective shallow traps such as antisite GaAs. The annealing stage of the proton-irradiation-induced defects which show the different behavior from that of electron-irradiation-induced defects suggests that proton irradiation creates more complicated defect complexes, containing vacancies rather than isolated vacancy-type defects or simple complexes which have been observed during electron-irradiation processes. Above 700 K, proton-irradiation-induced defects such as vacancy-type defects and simple vacancy complexes are almost annealed out, while Si-induced defects such as SiGa – VGa complexes cannot be annealed out above 973 K.
