Notes: Magnetization of RAlO3 (R: Dy, Ho, and Er) single crystals along the c axis have been measured by the superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. The single crystals are nominally pure and large sized, grown by the Czochralski method. Paramagnetic properties depend on the rare-earth elements. According to the magnetic entropy change, ErAlO3 single crystals are promising materials for the magnetic refrigerants using the Carnot cycle in the temperature range below 20 K. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Three types of salted meat paste (3% NaCl, 3% NaCl plus 0.66% NH4Cl or 3% NaCl plus 0.2% EDTA) were prepared from high and second grade surimi, set at 30°C up to 4 br, and subsequently heated at 85°C for 30 min. The gel strength, crosslinking of myosin heavy chain (MHC) and ɛ-(γ-glutamyl)lysine (ɛ-(γ-Glu)Lys) content were determined. With extended setting time, gel strength, crosslinking of MHC and the content of a crosslinked product, ɛ-(γ-Glu)Lys, increased markedly in the gel from the high grade surimi. Such changes were suppressed considerably in the presence of NH4Cl and EDTA and were not observed in the gel prepared from second grade surimi. These results indicated an active participation of intrinsic transglutaminase in the setting process.

Notes: Abstract The copolymer of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid was developed as a new sensitive resist for the LIGA (Lithographie, Galvanoformung, Abformtechnik) process. The resist exposures were carried out at the LIGA beamline of a superconducting compact light source NIJI-III. The absorbed energy density required to remove the entire exposed resist and produce a defect-free microstructure was between 0.4 and 7 kJ/cm3 (4 and 20 kJ/cm3 for PMMA). The sensitivity and patterning depth of the copolymer were 10 times and 3.5 times, respectively, those of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) assuming that both resists were exposed to synchrotron radiation (SR) of the same wavelength. Moreover, the copolymer showed high contrast and process stability.

Notes: Abstract Solid-state phase transformation of BaB2O4 during the isothermal annealing process for both β to α and α to β were investigated using a platinum crucible. For the β-phase crystal at the α-phase stable temperature (〉 925 °C), the β phase transforms to the α phase perfectly below the melting temperature of 1100 °C. Meanwhile, for the α-phase crystal at the β-phase stable temperature (〈 925 °C), the α phase transforms to the β phase perfectly above 800 °C. There is some difference in phase transformation behaviour between bulk-shape crystals and the powder, caused by thermal stress.

Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivities of rare earth ortho-aluminate, DyAlO3, ErAlO3 and HoAlO3, single crystals were measured between 2 and 20 K at magnetic fields between 0 and 5T. In zero magnetic field, the thermal conductivities show a typical dielectric behaviour and there are large differences in the peak values of the thermal conductivities. This suggests that the resonant phonon scattering by rare earth ions already exists at zero magnetic field in those perovskites. Two types of magnetic field dependencies are observed. The thermal conductivities of DyAlO3 and ErAlO3 decrease with increasing magnetic field; however, HoAlO3 gives the opposite result. These dependencies can be qualitatively explained by using an energy level scheme on the ground state in Kramer or non-Kramer ions.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of RAlO3 (R: Dy, Ho and Er) were grown using the Czochralski technique. The magnetization of the single crystals along the a-, b- and c-axes was measured in the paramagnetic region using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Using these values of the magnetization, the magnetic entropy change, which depends on the crystal axis direction, was calculated. Single crystals of DyAlO3 oriented along the b-axis and c-axis oriented ErAlO3 single crystals are promising materials for use in magnetic refrigeration systems using the Carnot cycle in the temperature range between 4.2 and 20 K.
