Notes: The Hf-added FeRuGaSi alloy film has an amorphous structure in the as-deposited state and becomes nanocrystalline after annealing. Due to this structure change from crystalline to amorphous by the addition of Hf, soft magnetic degradation of the film deposited on the slant grooved substrate, which is necessary for the sophisticated embedded thin film (ETF) head structure, is greatly suppressed and the undesirable film stress is relieved. The FeRuGaSi-Hf alloy film has higher resistivity and permeability at high frequencies than those of sendust film, and the read/write characteristics of this alloy film show better performance than sendust film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Objectives: We investigated the effect of different levels of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the cricothyroid (CT; a tensor muscle of the vocal folds) and posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA; sole abductor muscle of the vocal folds) muscles in dogs. Design: Prospective, controlled animal study. Subjects: Nine mongrel dogs of both sexes. Setting: University research laboratory. Interventions: After insertion of a cuffed tracheotomy tube low in the neck the compound EMG responses of the CT and PCA muscles during spontaneous respiration were measured simultaneously under different levels (2, 4, 6, and 8 cmH2O) of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Measurements and results: The CT showed a progressive increase in phasic expiratory EMG activity with the application of graded levels of PEEP. Application of PEEP over 4 cmH2O produced significant increases in the phasic CT activity (P〈0.05). In contrast to the CT, the PCA failed to increase phasic inspiratory EMG activity statistically until a 8 cmH2O of PEEP was applied (P〈0.05). The phasic expiratory CT and inspiratory PCA activities were 297.9±77.6 and 124.5±22.9, respectively, at the application of 6 cmH2O of PEEP (percentage of control, mean±SD). Conclusion: This study confirms the difference in sensitivity between adductor and abductor laryngeal muscles, demonstrating that the intrinsic laryngeal muscles do not all behave similarly after the application of CPAP.

Notes: Abstract TheBacillus subtilis gnt operon is negatively regulated via interaction of thegnt repressor (GntR) with an operator upstream ofgntR, which is antagonized by gluconate. An 8 bp insertional operator mutation (gntOi) of thegnt operon was constructed which affected the expression level of this operon. Two suppressors of thisgntOi mutation, exhibiting normal expression, were also isolated; one involved a threonine substitution for the Ala-48 residue (gntR48T) within the helix-turn-helix DNA-binding motif of GntR, and the other an adenine substitution for the guanine at nucleotide — 4 within thegntOi operator (gntOiM4A) (+1 is the transcription initiation site). ThegntR48T mutation by itself rendered thegnt operon partially constitutive. When thegntR43L mutation, which renders thegnt operon fully constitutive, was introduced into thegntOi orgntOiM4A mutant, the operator mutations were found not to affect the promoter activity of thegnt operon. These in vivo results indicate that thegntOi mutation affects the operator interaction with GntR, causing a low expression level even in the presence of gluconate. In vitro gel retardation and DNase I footprint analyses demonstrated that even when gluconate was present, GntR still bound to thegntOi operator region.

Notes: Abstract During recent decades much interest has been focused on the possibility of predicting and preventing atopic diseases during pregnancy. The idea of being able to detect a predisposition early and take suitable environmental measures in order to avoid overt allergy is an attractive position. Elevated cord IgE of around 1.0 IU/ml has been proposed as a predictor in western children. However, there remains no information about the effect of maternal lifestyle during pregnancy on these levels. Total IgE levels were therefore determined using Pharmacia CAP system and PRIST, with sensitivities of 0.01 kU/l and 0.25 kU/l, respectively, from serum samples taken from 1138 Japanese pairs of cord blood and pregnant women responding to a questionnaire regarding 17 health practices, intake of 32 food allergens and 5 environmental factors. Of these, 28 (2.5%) pairs of samples were excluded from further analysis because of high contamination of IgA (〉 15.4 mg/ml) in cord blood. Median cord blood IgE was 0.286 kU/l and geometric mean IgE was 66.25 kU/l in maternal sera using CAP system; there was no significant correlation between maternal log (IgE) and cord blood IgE. Similar results were obtained from PRIST, whose correlation with CAP system was significant (r = 0.884, p 〈 0.001 for maternal and r = 0.765, p 〈 0.001 for cord blood). Multiple logistic analysis demonstrated that avoidance of simultaneous exposure to hens' eggs and cow's milk (relative risk = 1.3, p 〈 0.05) as well as soy beans (relative risk = 2.8, p 〈 0.01) should be advised to mothers with positive allergic histories and/or high total IgE (〉 400 IU/ml), especially in women aged more than 35 years who are pregnant with a male child. However, maintenance of healthy lifestyles, especially taking proper exercise and sleeping, and avoidance of inhalant allergens during late pregnancy may be a more important strategy for the reduction of cord blood IgE levels.
