Notes: A duoplasmatron ion source is used to produce 25 mA of 3He+ with a pulse width of ∼80 ms at 360 Hz for acceleration to 10.5 MeV. At this energy, 3He striking water or carbon targets can produce short lived isotopes of 11C, 13N, 15O, and 18F for medical positron emission tomography (PET). A duoplasmatron ion source was chosen originally since it is capable of a sufficient singly charged helium beam with an acceptable gas consumption. Stable long-term operation of the source required a change in the filament material to molybdenum, and a careful understanding of the oxide filament conditioning, operation and geometry. Other improvements, particularly in the electronics, were helpful to increasing the reliability. The source has operated for many months at ∼2.5% duty factor without significant problems and with good stability. We report here the effort that was done to make this source understandable and reliable.

Notes: Abstract Axons and Schwann cells (SC) in the peripheral nerve (PN) are in permanent interaction. Both myelin-forming SC (MSC) and nonmyelin-forming SC (NMSC) have a defined antigenic phenotype. Four weeks after PN transection, the proliferating SC in the distal stump lose some of their antigens, they start to display antigenic profile of NMSC and, in addition, to reexpress nerve growth factor receptor (NGF-rec) and growth associated protein (GAP-43), two antigens of their precursor cells. It can be assumed that migrating SC may differ in their antigenic profile in regard to resident proliferated SC in denervated distal nerve stump. We found that many SC specific antigens (S-100 protein, glial fibrilary acidic protein-GFAP, NGF-rec, GAP-43) are down-regulated in migrating SC as compared to SC proliferating in situ in the absence of axons.

Notes: Abstract Room temperature formability testing was performed on an AlMg6.8 type alloy sheet with a fully recrystallized structure (average grain diameter ∼18 μm) and after partial annealing with a retained deformed structure. The yield strengths attained after full recrystallization and after partial annealing, were 175 and 283 MPa respectively. Such an increase in strength is followed by formability degradation, maximized around the plain strain state to either 42%, as obtained using the limiting dome height test (LDH), or 35% after using forming limit curves (FLC). A comparison with known high-strength formable alloys has shown that the tested alloy in the recrystallized condition has a better stretch formability (at the same or even higher yield stress level), while in the unrecrystallized-partially annealed condition it has a lower formability, limiting its application to moderate forming requirements for very high-strength parts. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract The effect of five Azotobacter chroococcum strains and nitrogen content in nutrient media on callus growth of two Beta vulgaris L. cultivars were investigated, as well as the activity of nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) in inoculated callus tissue. On medium with full nitrogen content (1 N) the inoculation with A. chroococcum strain A2 resulted in the highest calli mass, while strains A8 and A14 maximally increased NR activity. On media with 1/8 N the highest effect on calli growth, GS and GDH activity had the strain A8. The strain A2/1 significantly increased callus proliferation on medium without N. Asymbiotic association between sugar beet calli and Azotobacter depended on genotype/strain interaction and was realised in presence of different nitrogen levels.

Notes: Abstract Nitrate content, activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase, soluble protein content, and proportion of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) protein in total proteins were measured in leaves of Beta vulgaris L. plants affected by nickel, cadmium, and molybdenum in concentrations of 10-4, 10-2, and 1 mM. The most harmful effect on the above mentioned parameters had Cd, less harmful Ni, whereas Mo stimulated the investigated parameters. The proportion of RuBPCO protein showed a high tolerance to heavy metals.

Notes: Abstract The associations of four Azotobacter chroococcum strains (2, 5, 8 14) isolated from the rhizosphere with two sugar beet hybrids (Hy-11 and Dana) grown in vitro have been investigated. All tested strains caused an increase in dry mass of both hybrids almost proportionally to the nitrogen content in the medium. Plant nitrogen content was also higher in inoculated variants. The highest nitrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase activities were in Hy-11 associated with strain 5 and in hybrid Dana associated with strain 8. These associations were the most effective in N2-fixation 2 weeks after inoculation. The results showed specificity of individual strains with respect to individual hybrids.

Notes: Abstract Nine sugar beet lines were grown in a glasshouse on chernozem soil watered to 35, 50 and 65 % of maximal soil water capacity. After 12 d, plant water potential, net photosynthetic rate, contents of soluble proteins, DNA and RNA, proportion of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBISCO) protein, and carbonic anhydrase activity were measured. As soil moisture decreased, the leaf water potential and net photosynthetic rate decreased. DNA and RNA content and carbonic anhydrase activity decreased under moderate drought, and increased with severe drought. RUBISCO protein proportion did not change significantly under decreased soil moisture, while the total soluble protein content decreased.
