Notes: Abstract.— Induction of triploidy and tetraploidy in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was investigated by heat shock, cold shock, hydrostatic pressure, and/or chemicals (cytochalasin A, B, and D). Additionally, efficacy of combined protocols was determined. Heat shock 10 min after fertilization induced triploidy when incubation temperature was 24 C but not when incubation temperature was 31 C. Heat shock of 40–41 C at 4–6 min after fertilization was effective in inducing up to 100% triploidy with hatchability similar to controls. Cold shock at 13 C for 45 min five min after fertilization induced 85–100% triploids. Heat shock and multiple heat shocking were the most effective treatments for the induction of tetraploidy. Two heat treatments of 41 C applied at 65 and 80 min after fertilization for 5 min each produced approximately 80% tetraploidy in hatched fry. Immersion of fertilized eggs in cytochalasin A, B, or D at concentrations up to 10 μg/L applied at various times and durations was ineffective in inducing triploidy or tetraploidy.

Notes: New Zealand is currently experiencing a liberal and competitive economic environment which has led to a greater investment interest in corporate securities. Likewise, New Zealand firms are also developing strategies to attract investors, for example, through voluntary disclosure of information. Therefore, the level of information voluntarily disclosed by New Zealand companies is of interest to prospective investors. The purpose of this study is to examine empirically the relationship between five firm-specific characteristics and the general level of accounting information voluntarily disclosed by companies listed on New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZSE). In this study the a priori expectations are based on agency theory. The five firm-specific characteristics examined are: firm size, leverage, assets-in-place, type of auditor, and foreign listing status. The results obtained from cross-sectional regression show that firm size, foreign listing status and leverage are significantly related to the extent of voluntary disclosure. In contrast assets-in-place and type of auditor are not significant explanatory variables. A study of this type would be of particular relevance to accounting policy makers because, inter alia, it helps them in (a) understanding corporate disclosure behaviour, (b) explaining why firms adopt certain disclosure strategies, and (c) developing a coherent and acceptable set of mandatory disclosure requirements.

Notes: A total of 74 independently run bioassays with soil incorporated metsulfuron-methyl from 12 different laboratories was analysed by a logistic dose-response curve to assess the precision of regression parameters and relate ED50 to soil properties. The potency in terms of ED50 of metsulfuron-methyl in Brassica rapa L., which was used by all laboratories, varied between 0.05 and 3.9 g a.i. ha-1. ED50 was negatively correlated with pH and positively correlated with organic matter. The majority of laboratories had ED50 within the interval 0.1-1.0 g a.i. ha-1. At one laboratory using three test species, the most sensitive species was Beta vulgaris L. followed by Brassica rapa L. and Lepidium sativum L. The coefficients of variation were smallest for the ED50 and ED90 response levels and largest for the ED10. The slope of the response curves had considerably lower coefficients of variation than the EDs. The results are discussed in relation to a previous collaborative bioassay study. Finally it is suggested that standardization of bioassays with herbicides could be achieved in the same way as standardization of chemical analyses.

Notes: A newly developed chemical assay was used to determine the degradation in soil of two sulfonylurea herbicides, primisulfuron-methyl and metsulfuron-methyl, under both controlled and field conditions. The results from the chemical assay were compared with those from traditional bio-assays for determination of persistence in the field. Phytotoxic effects of these herbicides were not observed after 6 weeks following application to an acidic (pH 5.7) soil with high organic matter content (7.3% o.c). Half-lives of 13 to 29 days were measured for primisulfuron-methyl at different soil-water contents and temperatures while those for metsulfuron-methyl ranged from 8 to 36 days. The rate of degradation of metsulfuron-methyl was more sensitive to temperature than that of primisulfuron-methyl. Persistence in the field was shorter than expected considering the results from the controlled environment studies. However, determination of the persistence by both chemical assay and bioassay methods produced very similar results.

Notes: Investigates the possible occurrences of patterns in macroeconomic policy targeting and instruments use in some less developed countries where unscheduled regime transfers may occur. The patterns are held to correspond to those stipulated by Hibbs in his Partisan Theory for advanced democracies after due allowance is made for the nature of government and modes of regime transfer. Undertakes an investigation of Sudan, a country which has witnessed dramatic political changes that assumed the forms of eight alternating regimes in the shape of civilian democracies and military dictatorships since its independence in 1956. Traces, in particular, the evidence on quasi-political business cycles in output growth and inflation; and on quasi-political budget cycles in deficits and instruments of finance. Studies patterns on the form of use of policy instruments through reliance on monetary policy surprises. Obtains empirical results which generally point to the possible presence of eco-political patterns similar in principle to those operable in the case of developed countries but with some distinct differences in nature and rhythm.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 2-O-Ethyluracil und 2-O-Ethylthymin wurden mit 1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexamethyldisilazan silyliert und in Gegenwart vonTMS-triflat mit 2,3-Dideoxy-3-fluoro-D-erythro-pentofuranosid, 3-Azido-2,3-dideoxy-D-erythro-pentofuranosid und 2,3-Dideoxy-3-phthalimido-β-D-erythro-pentofuranosederivaten zu den entsprechenden 2-O-Ethyl-Nucleosiden umgesetzt.
Notes: Summary 2-O-Ethyluracil and 2-O-ethylthymine were silylated with 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazane and condensed in the presence ofTMS triflate with 2,3-dideoxy-3-fluoro-D-erythro-pentofuranoside, 3-azido-2,3-dideoxy-D-erythro-pentofuranoside, and 2,3-dideoxy-3-phthalimido-β-D-erythro-pentofuranose derivatives to give the corresponding 2-O-ethyl nucleosides. Deprotection with saturated methanolic ammonia afforded the 2′,3′-dideoxy-3′-fluoro-2-O-ethyluridines, whereas 3′-azido-2′,3′-dideoxy-3-O-ethyluridine was obtained by deprotection with tetrabutylammonium fluoride in tetrahydrofuran. 3′-Amino-2′,3′-dideoxy-3-O-ethyluridine could be obtained only by treatment of the corresponding 3′-azido nucleoside with triphenylphosphine in pyridine. 3′-Deoxy-2-O-ethyl-3′-fluorothymidine (6b) showed moderate activity against HIV-1.

Notes: Abstract.  Solid solutions of ZnSe x Te 1-x (0.1≤x≤1) were synthesized by vacuum fusion of stoichiometric proportions of ZnSe and ZnTe. X-ray diffraction data revealed that they have polycrystalline cubic zinc blende structure. The calculated unit cell lattice constant (a) for the different compositions in powder form vary linearly, with molecular fraction x following Vegard’s law: a(x)=6.165−0.485x. Thin films of ZnSe x Te 1-x (0.1≤x≤1) solid solutions deposited onto glass or quartz substrates by thermal evaporation in a vacuum of 10-4 Pa were found to be polycrystalline with a preferred (1 1 1) orientation. The obtained data were confirmed by electron diffraction. The optical studies showed that ZnSe x Te 1-x polycrystalline films of different compositions have two direct transitions with corresponding energy gaps E g and E g+ΔSO The variations in both E g and E g+ΔSO with x indicate that ZnSe x Te 1-x solid solution belongs to an amalgamation-type following quadratic equations with bowing parameters 1.251 and 1.275, respectively.

Notes: Abstract This study examined the effects of lisinopril on diastolic function in 12 normotensive patients (mean age 72 years) with symptomatic congestive heart failure, intact left ventricular systolic function and abnormal diastolic function secondary to ischaemic heart disease in a placebo-controlled double blind crossover study, with each treatment dosed orally for 5 continuous weeks. Compared to placebo, lisinopril significantly decreased blood pressure, increased plasma renin activity without altering heart rate or plasma norepinephrine. There was no statistically significant improvement with lisinopril in radionuclide derived peak filling rate and time to peak filling rate, in Doppler echocardiographic measurements of the ratio of peak flow velocity in early diastole to the peak flow velocity of atrial contraction (E:A ratio) and in visual analogue scales of symptoms. Thus, although angiotension converting enzyme inhibitors may have an established role in the treatment of heart failure secondary to left ventricular systolic dysfunction, its use in patients with isolated diastolic dysfunction remains unclear.
