    Notes: Submicron ferromagnets have been successfully incorporated into GaAs semiconductors by Mn+ ion implantation and subsequent heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy, x-ray fluorescence spectrum analysis, and atomic force microscopy are used to structurally characterize the GaMn precipitates which form within the GaAs matrix. These crystallites are room-temperature ferromagnets with controllable magnetic properties. Magnetic force microscopy images reveal that unmagnetized samples contain both magnetic dipoles and quadrupoles, but that after magnetization the single-domain state predominates. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Submicron room-temperature ferromagnets are formed in GaAs semiconductors through a simple process of ion implantation and subsequent heat treatment. The ferromagnetic structures are studied using magnetic force microscopy. Magnetization switching of single-domain particles has been directly imaged in applied magnetic fields. In order to understand the images of magnetic structures taken under external fields, we have characterized the magnetic force microscopy (MFM) probes by imaging microfabricated current-carrying strips in applied magnetic fields. Patterned micrometer scale lines containing submicron magnetic structures on GaAs are fabricated using lithography in conjunction with broad beam ion implantation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Switching characteristics of 20-nm-thick NiFeCo submicron arrays are systematically studied by means of magnetometry, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic simulation based on solution of the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation. A switching anomaly found in these structures could not be described by the magnetization coherent rotation model. Both experimental data and simulation results indicate that trapped magnetization vortices are responsible for the switching anomaly. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 1 (APS1), also known as autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the failure of several endocrine glands as well as nonendocrine organs. The autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene responsible for APS1 on chromosome 21q22.3 has recently been identified. Here, we have characterized mutations in the AIRE gene by direct DNA sequencing in 16 unrelated APS1 families ascertained mainly from the USA. Our analyses identified four different mutations (a 13-bp deletion, a 2-bp insertion, one nonsense mutation, and one potential splice/donor site mutation) that are likely to be pathogenic. Fifty-six percent (9/16) of the patients contained at least one copy of a 13-bp deletion (1094–1106del) in exon 8 (seven homozygotes and two compound heterozygotes). A nonsense mutation (R257X) in exon 6 was also found in 31.3% (5/16) of the USA patients. These data are important for genetic diagnosis and counseling for families with autoimmune endocrine syndromes.

    Notes: Abstract The heterobinuclear complex, [CuMn(L)(phen)2](ClO4)2· H2O, [L = N,N-bis(N-hydroxyethyleneamine)oxamido, phen=1,10-phenanthroline], has been synthesized with N,N-bis(N-hydroxyethylaminoethyl)oxamido as the bridging ligand. The electronic reflectance spectrum indicates the presence of exchange-coupling interaction between bridging MnII and CuII ions. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility of the complex was measured over the 4–300K range. The magnetic coupling parameter is consistent with an antiferromagnetic exchange between the MnII ion and CuII ion and fits the data for a heterobinuclear CuII–MnII magnetic exchange model based on the Hamiltonian operator (H= −2JS1S2, S1=1/2, S2=5/2), giving the antiferromagnetic coupling parameter of 2J=−74.0cm−1.

    Notes: Abstract Large purple-brown crystals of two reduced bismuth molybdenum oxides have been grown from the MoO3–Bi2O3 system by electrolytic reduction of the molten salts. The unit cell parameters and the compositions have been determined by X-ray diffraction and XPS microprobe analysis, respectively. The empirical formulae were refined to Bi0.25MoO3.1 and Bi0.21MoO3.2. Transport measurements (the resistivity and the thermoelectric power) showed that both crystals are semiconductors with p-type carriers, and the thermally activated energy gaps are respectively about 0.296 eV and 0.30 eV. The EPR spectra, the XPS core-level spectra and possible structural features were also considered.

    Notes: Abstract Phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) belongs to a family of human plasma lipid transfer proteins that bind to small amphophilic molecules. PLTP contains cysteines at residues 5, 129, 168, and 318. Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein, which is a member of the same gene family, contains an essential disulfide bond between Cys135 and Cys175; these residues, which correspond to Cys129 and Cys168 in PLTP, are conserved among all known members of the gene family. To identify the importance of these and the remaining cysteine residues to PLTP secretion and activity, each was replaced by a glycine by site-directed mutagenesis. The mutant as well as wild-type PLTP cDNAs were cloned into the mammalian expression vector pSV·SPORT1, and the PLTP cDNAs were transfected to COS-6 cells for expression. PLTP Cys129 → Gly and PLTP Cys168 → Gly were secretion incompetent. Neither PLTP mass nor activity was detectable in cell lysates and culture medium. Relative to wild-type PLTP, PLTP Cys5 → Gly and PLTP Cys318 → Gly exhibited similar specific activities but partially impaired PLTP synthesis and secretion. Intracellular PLTP appeared as two bands of 75 and 51 kDa corresponding to reported molecular masses for the glycosylated and nonglycosylated forms. The specific activities of PLTP Cys5 → Gly and PLTP Cys318 → Gly were similar in the cell lysates and medium, suggesting that glycosylation does not affect transfer activity.

    Notes: Abstract Using data from a 1987 elderly survey, this study examines demographic and socioeconomic characteristics as well as expressed preferences for the patrilineal extended family as factors affecting coresidence among Chinese elderly. Consistent with expectations, three quarters of the elderly live with their children and the overwhelming majority of extended households are with a married son and grandchildren. This study contributes to the literature on Asian developing nations by illustrating the role of a government supported pension system in explaining prior perplexing results for urbanization, by documenting the role of preferences for the patrilineal extended family and by exploring earlier suggestions that factors vary by marital status. The greater vulnerability of widowed elderly is shown not only by higher rates of coresidence, but also by interactive effects with economic resources, age and number of sons.
