Notes: To develop a quantitative representation of the interparticle reaction rate of binary powder, an investigation of several models has been undertaken, and their fit to experimental data for the Fe2O3V2O5 system has been performed by the present authors, as well as for the Al2O3CuO, Al2O3ZnO, MgOAl2O3, MgOFe2O3, and Fe2O3ZnO systems published previously. A concentric spherical model proposed recently shows a quantitative correlation between the reaction rate and the number of contact points between particles in unidirectional diffusion and counterdiffusion systems. The model is consistent with experimental data for the above systems. It is potentially useful for reaction-rate analysis of a wide range of powder systems in which particle sizes and the mixing ratio are varied independently. This is an improvement over previous unreacted core analyses such as the Jander and Ginstling–Brounshtein models.

Notes: Abstract. Although most papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PMCs) are of little clinical significance, patients with PMCs occasionally have an unfavorable outcome, especially when they present with bulky nodal metastasis or distant metastasis. We have attempted to identify “high-risk” PMCs by evaluating clinical, pathologic, and immunohistochemical prognostic factors. Among 190 patients with a PMC, 156 without clinically apparent nodal metastasis had a benign course. The remaining 34 patients, who presented with cervical lymphadenopathy of at least 1 cm, were studied. Three of the four patients who developed distant metastasis died of the disease, and the other died of local recurrence. All patients who developed distant metastasis or died of the disease had both nodal metastasis of at least 3 cm and a nonencapsulated type of primary lesion. All patients who developed distant metastasis showed both extracapsular extension of the metastatic lesions in lymph nodes and positive staining for transforming growth factor-β3 (TGFβ3) (a potent growth inhibitor) in the primary lesion. The Ki-67 (an indicator of cell proliferation) labeling indices in the primary and metastatic nodal lesions of patients who died of cancer were significantly higher than those of the others with nonfatal disease. None of the patients showed P53 (nuclear tumor-suppressor phosphoprotein) overexpression. In conclusion, patients with PMC who have both 3 cm or larger lymphadenopathy and a nonencapsulated type of primary lesion may be regarded as high-risk patients. Immunohistologic positivity for Ki-67 and TGFβ3 in cancer cells is a potential indicator of aggressively malignant PMC.

Notes: Abstract In this study we examine the calibration of wind speed measured by a sonic anemometer, with an orthogonal probe configuration, with regard to the approximation of the flow angle, and the wind-speed dependence of the flow attenuation attributed to the transducer shadow. The flow angle θ should be calculated by the iterative method when the attenuation is relatively high. For a probe manufactured by Kaijo Co. TR-61C, the wind-speed dependence of the transducer shadow effect is formulated from the results of the wind-tunnel experiment. Assuming the equation is applicable to field observations, significant errors possibly remain especially when the wind speed is low, and /or the angle between the flow vector and the sonic path is small, if the wind-speed dependence in measurement errors is neglected.

Notes: For the rapid and simple identification of haemoglobin variants, tryptic peptides prepared by digestion of the mixture of normal and variant subunits were analysed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The globin was not reduced and alkylated. In a single spectrum from the ESI analysis of tryptic digests from normal adult globin, nearly 90 significant peaks were observed. Many of these peaks had the right mass and yielded tandem mass spectra of sufficient quality to define the sequence. Some ion peaks were assigned mainly by mass values with additional indirect evidence. A series of multiply charged ions were observed and these ions were valuable for making the assignments. Ion peaks which were assigned with some degree of certainty covered whole sequence from α-and β-subunits. In addition to the normal ion peaks, variant ion peaks were observed in the analysis of tryptic peptides of the non-derivatized globin mixture from Hb SC double heterozygote and from Hb MBoston heterozygote. This approach will offer routine methods in clinical laboratories.

Notes: ABSTRACT The serum concentration of inflammation-associated proteins and several complement components in the cord blood of 215 newborns with and without chorioamnionitis (CAM), who were delivered between 17 and 42 weeks of gestation, were measured. We investigated the relationship of levels of serum proteins to acute, subacute, and chronic CAM, and to subacute necrotizing funisitis (SNF). Complement components C3d, C3, and C4 levels increased in subacute CAM (P = 0.0002, P = 0.0007, P = 0.0029, respectively), whereas factor B increased in each type of CAM (P = 0.0001, P = 0.0009, P = 0.0004, respectively). Among the immunoglobulins, IgG levels were unrelated to the presence or type of CAM, IgM levels increased in subacute CAM (P 〈 0.0001), and IgA levels increased in chronic CAM (P 〈 0.0001). Among the acute phase reactants (APR), haptoglobin and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels increased in acute (P 〈 0.0001, P = 0.0022, respectively) and chronic CAM (P = 0.0035, P = 0.0345, respectively), whereas orosomucoid levels increased in chronic CAM (P = 0.0003). IL-6 levels increased in acute (P = 0.0011) and subacute (P = 0.0475) CAM. C3d (P = 0.0063), C3 (P = 0.0289), C4 (P = 0.0491), and IgM (P 〈 0.0001) levels were increased in SNF. These findings suggest that the histologic distinction of acute, subacute, and chronic CAM is a useful indicator of the inflammatory mediator status of the infants. The infants with SNF may have ended their initial active inflammatory states, but they still have subacute immune activation.

Notes: Abstract A female infant presented with renal insufficiency at age 4 weeks. She had bilateral multiple renal cysts but no other malformations of the urinary tract and no family history of renal disease. The kidney, liver, and spleen were not enlarged. Pathology examination of her left kidney when she was 6 years old revealed numerous cortical cysts with a dilatated Bowman's space and small glomerular tufts, and immature metanephric cells which often formed primitive ducts, suggesting a diagnosis of dysplastic glomerulocystic kidney. Glomerulocystic kidney is a rare type of congenital renal cystic disease with various clinical features and etiologies. It must be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic diseases in infancy.
