    Notes: A. virus causing mosaic and leaf deformation of Physalis minima has been identified as an isolate of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on the basis of its transmission by aphids in a non-persistent manner, polyhedral particles of 29 nm diameter, molecular weight of coat protein subunits us 24-5 kDa. serological relationship with a CMV isolate and a tripartite single-stranded RNA genome with a subgenomic RNA4- Furthermore. cDNA representing coat protein gene was synthesized and cloned. Complete nucleotide sequences (890 nt) were obtained which showed a coat protein gene open reading frame of 657 residues. THE nucleotide sequences provided the 218 amino ACID sequences of the coat protein. Nucleotide as well as amino acid sequences revealed more than 90% identity with the CMV subgroup I strains.

    Notes: The corrosion behaviour of an indigenous cast alloy of Ag-Sn-Cu, developed for crown and bridge prostheses, was studied in artificial saliva, with and without the addition of 0·1 m lactic acid, using a potentiostatic technique, and compared with that of the standard cast alloy of Ag-Pd (Ney 76). The values of different parameters such as corrosion potential and corrosion current density were determined for the indigenous alloy of Ag-Sn-Cu and the Ag-Pd alloy. The rate of corrosion of the indigenous alloy was found to be relatively higher than that of the Ag-Pd alloy up to an applied potential of + 400 mV. However, while the indigenous alloy showed a distinct tendency for passivation below + 200 mV at the current level of 0·5 mA/cm2 in the artificial saliva (pH 5·7) at 37 °C, no such tendency for passivation was shown by the Ag-Pd alloy even up to + 400 mV. The tendency for passivation by the indigenous Ag-Sn-Cu alloy, however, was not shown in the artificial saliva in the presence of 0·1 m lactic acid (pH. 2·7) at 37 °C. Minor variation was observed in the corrosion behaviour of the indigenous Ag-Sn-Cu alloys of different grades prepared by alloying elements of varying purity.

    Notes: Fungal allergens have been found to be one of the most prevalent aeroallergens in India. Knowledge of shared/unique components among different fungi is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment of patients allergic to fungi. In the present study, crude extracts (CE) of 11 common fungi (Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Asp. fumigatus, Asp. niger, Asp. tamarii, Asp. versicolor, Cladosporium herbarum, Curvularia lunata, Mucor hiemalis, Penicillium citrinum, and Fusarium solani) were characterized by isoelectric focusing (IEF), SDS-PAGE, and immunoblot. On IEF (pI 3–9), the number of protein bands was found to be greatest (46) in M. hiemalis extract. SDS-PAGE exhibited a varied number of bands, generally 18–40, with mol. mass ranging from 14 to 100 kDa. IgG-specific immunoprint using rabbit anti-F. solani CF antibodies demonstrated a mol. mass distribution of shared antigenic proteins of 14–100 kDa in most of the fungi. Shared allergenicity was observed in a number of allergenic proteins in fungal extracts with mol. mass ranging between 14 and 70 kDa on IgE-specific immunoblot using pooled sera of patients allergic to Fusarium. A 45-kDa protein was found to be common among these fungi on immunoblot with patients as well as with rabbit antibodies. F. solani CF extract contained more antigenic/allergenic proteins than F. solani CE. It was concluded that F. solani CF shared several antigenic/allergenic components with CE of other common fungi. This fact needs to be taken into account when fungal extracts are used in diagnosis and immunotherapy of allergic patients.

    Notes: Three silver-base alloys containing varying amounts of tin and copper were prepared by induction melting and centrifugal casting, and their properties were evaluated and compared with those of the type III gold alloy, for their suitability for non-porcelain crown and bridge work in dentistry. Among these the alloy II (Ag−Sn−Cu−Zn) was found to possess the best combination of strength and ductility and highest corrosion resistance in artificial saliva. Also its wear resistance was found superior to alloys I and III and was comparable to that of natural tooth. Thus the alloy II was found to be quite a promising indigenous and economic silver-based cast alloy for crown and bridge prostheses.

    Notes: Abstract The non-linear response of fluorescein-doped boric acid glass was probed using the Z-scan technique. A striking contrast was observed in its non-linear transmission characteristics at different argon-ion laser wavelengths. The non-linear transmission characteristics exhibit strong saturation behaviour at 457.9nm whilst at 476.5nm and 488.0nm the response is dominated by intense excited state absorption. The experimental observations are explained using the four-level saturable absorber model. The excited state absorption cross-section, saturation intensity, light induced absorption and refraction changes have been determined along with the sign of the non-linearity at various argon laser wavelengths. The optical limiting characteristics of fluorescein at 476.5 nm and 457.9 nm are also reported. The behaviour of the sample was in agreement with the Z-scan observations.

    Notes: Abstract Seasonal changes in biomass, net primary productivity and turnover of dry matter of para grass (Brachiaria mutica) under a mixed tree stand and in an adjacent open stand in northern India are presented. Both stands attained peak values of live shoot biomass in September with a higher value under mixed tree stand (665 g m−2) than in the open stand (522 g m−2). The net aboveground production was 590 and 527 g m−2 yr−1 under mixed tree stand and in the open, respectively. The belowground net primary production was also greater under mixed tree stand (100 g m−2 yr−1) than in the open (76 g m−2 yr−1). Maximum aboveground and belowground net primary productions in both stands were obtained during the rainy season. The total net primary production for para grass was about 15% higher under mixed tree stand than in the open. The turnover rates of total plant biomass were greatest in the rainy season and the least during the summer season. The system transfer functions showed that the production of para grass on both stands was aboveground-oriented, accounting for 85–87% of annual total net primary production.

    Notes: Abstract Reduced growth of plants and excessive generalised and spotty yellowing of leaves occurred in ornamental crotons that were infected with a geminivirus, which was detected by spot hybridization tests using a cloned probe derived from DNA-A of acalypha yellow mosaic geminivirus. The croton virus was transmitted by the whitefly,Bemisia tabaci, toNicotiana tabacum andAcalypha indica, in which it caused leaf curl and yellow mosaic, respectively, but it was not transmitted to five other species. Infected crotons may therefore serve as reservoirs of a geminivirus that is able to infect a crop species.

    Notes: Summary The nature and extent of field resistance to late blight, and the effect of plant age and inoculum level on resistance components and host attributes, were studied on the Indian potato cultivars Kufri Chandramukhi, Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Badshah and Kufri Sherpa. Latent period, infection efficiency, colonization rate and sporulation were found to operate in cvs Kufri Jyoti, and Kufri Badshah. Based on component analysis cv. Kufri Jyoti was similar to or sometimes more resistant than Kufri Badshah. No correlation was observed between any of the host attributes and resistance to late blight, except that the erect canopy of Kufri Badshah was associated with its slow blighting rate. At high inoculum, colonization rate and total sporulation were increased but infection efficiency was decreased.
