    Notes: 13 C was measured for whole soil C, free LF C, and iPOM C. The mean residence time of soil C under CT (44 yr) was 1.7 times less than in NT (73 yr). The amount of free LF C was 174, 196, and 474 g C m-2 for CT, NT, and NS, respectively. Total iPOM C amounts in CT, NT, and NS were 193, 337, and 503 g C m-2, respectively. The level of fine iPOM C (53-250 μm) level in macroaggregates (250-2000μm) was only 2.4 times greater and accounted for only 21% of the difference in total POM C. Sequestration of iPOM was observed in NT vs. CT, but free LF was not influenced by differential tillage. We conclude that differences in aggregate turnover largely control the difference in fine iPOM in CT vs. NT and consequently SOM loss is affected by both the amount of aggregation and aggregate turnover.

    Notes: 13 C natural abundance to differentiate crop- and grassland-derived C. Concentrations of coarse iPOM C (250–2000 μm iPOM in macroaggregates), expressed on a per unit aggregate weight (g iPOM C kg−1 aggregate), did not differ between tillage treatments. In contrast, concentrations of fine iPOM C (53–250 μm iPOM in macroaggregates) were less in CT compared to NT macroaggregates. On a whole soil basis, fine iPOM C was on average 51% less in CT than in NT, and accounted for 21% of the total C difference between NT and CT. The concentration of free LF C was not affected by tillage, but was on average 45% less in the cultivated systems than NV. Proportions of crop-derived C in macroaggregates were similar in NT and CT, but were three times greater in microaggregates from NT than microaggregates from CT. We suggest that a faster turnover rate of macroaggregates in CT compared with NT leads to a slower rate of microaggregate formation within macroaggregates and less stabilization of new SOM in free microaggregates under CT.

    Notes: Abstract Recently, a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy has been shown to be associated with a deficiency of laminin α2 chain, a tissue-specific component of the basal lamina. Besides muscular dystrophy, children affected with this disorder also show electrophysiological and magnetic resonance imaging evidence of white matter involvement in the central nervous system (CNS). We have studied the precise localization of laminin α2 chain in normal human brain, using specific electron microscopic techniques including thin-section fracture labeling and cryoultramicrotomy, in parallel with immunohistochemical techniques. We found that this laminin chain was localized to the basal lamina of all cerebral blood vessels, whereas blood vessels of the choroid plexus did not show any reaction. No positive reaction was found in meningeal blood vessels either. We hypothesize that in normal brain, laminin α2 may be important for the selective filtration capability of the blood-brain barrier. The lack of laminin α2 in cerebral vessels of children with laminin α2-deficient congenital muscular dystrophy may cause impaired selective filtration, leading to leakage of plasma components and damage to the CNS. Further studies should be performed on patients affected by congenital muscular dystrophy associated with laminin α2 deficiency to test this hypothesis.
