    Notes: A 19-year-old woman with a cutaneous ciliated cyst on her buttock is reported. Histological, histochemical, and electron microscopic studies revealed ciliated cells, mucinous cells showing merocrine secretion, and areas of squamous metaplasia in the cyst wall. This is the first case of cutaneous ciliated cyst that contained non-ciliated mucinous cells as a component.

    Notes: The central Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) of New Zealand is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism, active since 1.6 Ma. We report palaeomagnetic measurements from 59 distinct volcanic units sampled at 98 sites in the TVZ. These are mainly rhyolitic ignimbrites and lava domes, with a few basaltic, andesitic, and dacitic lavas. Most have new K/Ar or 40Ar/39 Ar ages. The remanent magnetizations are generally stable to both thermal and alternating-field demagnetization, and well-determined mean palaeodirections were obtained for all sites.Our findings suggest that the Taupo, Whakamaru, Maroa, Reporoa, Rotorua, and Okataina volcanic centres were magnetized during the Brunhes normal chron. Kapenga is an older volcanic centre, where activity commenced around 0.89 Ma and extended into the Brunhes. Mangakino volcanic centre is significantly older and was active from 1.6 to 0.95 Ma.Transitional or intermediate palaeodirections were obtained from Ahuroa ignimbrite (1.18 ± 0.02 Ma) and Mamaku ignimbrite (0.22 ± 0.01 Ma). The former almost certainly corresponds to the Cobb Mountain Event. The latter is significantly older than the Blake Event, and probably corresponds to the recently reported Pringle Falls/Summer Lake magnetic episode.Multiple sites from the Whakamaru ignimbrite have indistinguishable 40Ar/39 Ar ages (0.33 ± 0.01 Ma) and glass composition, but divergent palaeomagnetic directions. This contrast suggests that either (1) the different sites were formed during a phase of extremely violent activity, lasting up to a few hundred years, during which geomagnetic secular variation was recorded; or (2) that they were formed in a single eruption, and rotation during subsequent extensional tectonism has caused divergence of the palaeodirections. 40Ar/39Ar ages of 0.77 ± 0.03 Ma for the reversely magnetized Rahopeka ignimbrite and 0.71 ± 0.06 Ma for the overlying normally magnetized Waiotapu ignimbrite bracket and constrain the age of the Maluyama-Brunhes transition.

    Notes: Immunofluorescence microscopy of epidermodermal junction components in serial cryosections from the perilesional skin of a patient with generalized atrophic benign epidermolysis bullosa (GABEB) showed broken line-like staining of both BPAG2 (180-kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen) and uncein (antigen of 19-DEJ-l monoclonal antibody), whereas integrin α6 and laminin 5 were continuously expressed along the basement membrane zone. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed a mosaic distribution of the BPAG2/uncein positive and negative cells. BPAG2, a candidate protein of GABEB, probably has a close connection with uncein, an anchoring filament component.

    Notes: Highly oriented diamond films with {001} facets were grown on Si{001} using microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The tilt and rotation of the diamond crystals were measured by polar x-ray diffraction. The full widths at half-maximum of {004} and {220} diffraction peaks were 5° and 10°, respectively. It was found that the {220} diffraction poles split into two peaks by approximately 5°. This result indicated that there were two possible azimuthal rotations about the surface normal of the substrate for the epitaxially nucleated diamond grains. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a case of focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) with multiple giant papillomas on nonperimucosal areas. The patient had had cribriform hyperpigmented and depigmented plaques on the trunk and extremities since birth. There were also hypoplastic skin lesions on the right arm, left elbow and right thigh. The multiple giant papillomas began to appear. when she was 22 years old, on the trunk and extremities. Cryotherapy was effective in controlling them.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé. L’angle de rotation du genou arthrosique pendant l’appui pas été entièrement expliqué. Les auteurs ont ètudié la rotation de l’articulation du genou par ultrasons. Il existe une corrélation très significative entre l’angle de rotation mesuré aux ultrasons et par tomodensitométrie. Le mouvement rotatoire dynamique pendant l’appui fut mesuré dans 107 gonarthroses et 40 genoux témoins. A une flexion de 20°, la rotation interne des genoux souffrant d’une arthrose de la classe I initiale fut significativement plus faible que celle des genoux témoins (−4.8°, P=0.004). Cette anomalie de rotation ètait la modification pathologique initiale. La rotation externe lors d’une extension maximale et la rotation du mouvement vissé a proportionnellement diminué avec la progression de l’arthrose du compartiment interne. Nous avons donc éclairci le mouvement de rotation dynamique des genous arthrosiques pendant l’appui.
    Notes: Summary. The angle of rotation of the knee joint during weight-bearing in osteoarthritic knees has not been fully determined. The authors aimed to examine the nature and extent of rotation during weight-bearing by means of ultrasonic investigation. There was a highly significant correlation between the rotational angle measured by ultrasound and that determined by CT. The dynamic rotatory movement during weight-bearing was measured in 107 osteoarthritic and 40 control knees. At 20° of flexion the internal rotation of the early grade I osteoarthritic knees (−1.6°) was significantly less than that of the control knees (−4.8°, P=0.004). This abnormality was the initial pathological rotational change in osteoarthritis of the knee joint. The external rotation at maximal extension and the rotation of the screw-home movement proportionately decreased with progression of medial compartment osteoarthritis. By virtue of these observations we have clarified the dynamic rotatory movement in osteoarthritic knees during weight-bearing.
