    Notes: The purpose of this project was to develop rapport with a Chinese Community Association and then establish preventive diabetic and hypertension programs with the Chinese in Chinatown, Hawaii. Subjects were recruited from this Chinese Community Association. Two hundred Chinese responded to the invitation. Among these. 75 individuals had either Type 2 diabetes, hypertension or both. Thirty-six males and 39 females ranging in age from 51 years old to 96 years old (Mean = 71.76, SD = 9.58) participated. Surveys and educational programs were carried out in Chinese. Results were described in terms of quantitative measures (family support and health outcomes) and qualitative experiences (case studies). Eighty percent of participants had decreased their diastolic blood pressure from above 95 mmHg to below 90 mmHg and systolic blood pressure from above 155 mmHg to below 140 mmHg. Ninety-five (n= 71) percent of participants had maintained their glucose level within the 90 mg/dL to 150 mg/dL range with a mean reduction of 57.86 mg/dL in one year. The hardest thing for families was the glucose self-monitoring. Case studies suggested that open-minded active listening and persistence formed the basis for developing a culturally sensitive community-based self management program for chronic diseases. Collaboration among the community, public health nurses, and diabetes nurse educators facilitated the process of community education and health promotion.

    Notes: Based on the push–pull mechanism, we have developed a piezoelectric micropositioner, with a new mechanical construction. The positioner is basically composed of two piezoelectric actuators as the source of the motion and three permanent magnet feet to produce enough friction force for clamping. The movement of more than 5 mm with the steps of 150–700 nm at the speed of 50–200 steps per second can be accomplished by applying very low driving voltage to the positioner. The absence of clamping voltage in this positioner makes it well suited for use in ballistic electron emission microscope (BEEM). A BEEM operated in a gas-controlled environment based on it has been built and its performances have been tested. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied the dependence of nanofabrication on the pulse duration explicitly with scanning tunneling microscopy, using graphite as an example. It is demonstrated that, under comparable conditions, the depth of the as-generated craters has monotonic correlation with the pulse duration, while the apparent surface diameters do not show significant changes. This is believed to be direct evidence that the electron-induced gasification reaction of the carbon atoms did occur during fabrication, rather than field evaporation mechanism. The removal rate of the carbon atoms is estimated to be on the order of 105/s. In addition, the characteristics of the fabrication is shown to be related to the specific reaction type. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The fabrication process on a graphite surface is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy, with emphasis on the effects of high electric field associated with voltage pulse. We have demonstrated that two distinct types of features can be repeatedly produced and are found to be correlated with tip–sample separation, displaying a threshold behavior. By correlating the observation with the general trend of tunneling barrier height versus tip–sample separation, it is suggested that field emission and electrical breakdown are the driving mechanisms for generating craters and mounds, respectively. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The characteristics of the nanostructure on the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) involving field emitted electrons is examined with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A simple model based on the continuum electron diffusion is proposed and is compared with the experimental results. It suggests that the process could be associated with the diffusion of electrons at the vicinity of the injection position. It also implies that the characteristics of the as-produced nanometer sized craters could be correlated to the anisotropy degree of the transport properties of HOPG. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Moving space charge field (photo-emf) effects are observed in standard and low temperature grown GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) samples in which dc photocurrents are generated by constant speed moving optical interference patterns. Experiments reveal an enhanced detection bandwidth for optical doppler frequency measurements compared to previously studied bulk II-VI and III-V materials due to the higher quantum efficiency and optical absorption of GaAs MQWs, in spite of their reduced carrier mobility-lifetime product values resulting mainly from the significantly shorter free carrier lifetimes. The high defect density of low temperature grown MQWs can also yield large field-of-view and, for optical ultrasound detections, high cutoff frequency. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Enhancement of the photocurrent density generated by internal moving space charge electric fields in semi-insulating GaAs multiple quantum wells is observed when the sample is biased with a high speed, zero-mean square wave electric field which increases the internal space charge electric field strength. Tunability of the space charge field formation time is also demonstrated by adjusting the amplitude of the bias signal. This technique can be used to enhance the sensitivity of optical doppler frequency measurements based on moving space charge field effects in photoconductive semiconductors. Electronic tunability of the space charge field formation time also adds versatility in optical power spectrum analysis applications. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Background. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a useful tool in the evaluation of the complex deformities which are present in congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot). Objective. To evaluate MRI with the multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) technique as a new method for assessment of clubfoot. Materials and methods. Seven infants with 11 clubfeet were studied by using three-dimensional gradient-echo MR sequences. MPR was performed from the acquired image data in orthogonal, single and double oblique planes to demonstrate the complex deformities in clubfoot. Three angles (talar body-neck angle, talocalcaneal left-right angle and the talocalcaneal superior-inferior angle) were defined for measuring the medial angulation of the talar neck and the rotation of the calcaneus in relation to the talus. Results. The method clearly demonstrated the pathological anatomy of the clubfeet, especially the talonavicular articulations. Dislocation of the navicular bone was observed in 9 of the 11 feet. The angle measurements were easily conducted with MPR, and these angles differed considerably among the patients. Conclusions. The information provided by this method is useful for classification of the severity of clubfoot deformities.
