    Notes: We report large-scale synthesis of silica nanowires (SiONWs) using an excimer laser ablation method. Silica was produced in the form of amorphous nanowires at a diameter of ∼15 nm and a length up to hundreds micrometers. The SiONWs emit stable and high brightness blue light at energies of 2.65 and 3.0 eV. The intensity of the emission is two orders of magnitude higher than that of porous silicon. The SiONWs may have potential applications in high-resolution optical heads of scanning near-field optical microscope or nanointerconnections in future integrated optical devices. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have observed differential reflection dynamics in In0.518Ga0.492As/InP multiple quantum wells, using the pump–probe technique, and examined the photoluminescence spectra to determine the interface quality for the samples studied. Our results show that the interface quality and well width of the quantum wells (QWs) strongly influence the differential reflection dynamics. The experimental results provide a direct evidence to demonstrate that photoexcited carrier diffusion in cap layer and barriers along the direction perpendicular to sample surface plays a dominant role in determining the differential reflection dynamics of the QWs. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using the pump-probe technique, we have observed time-resolved differential reflection in InAsxP1−x/InP (x≤0.35) strained-multiple-quantum wells. The experimental results show that barrier height, interface roughness and well width influence strongly the differential reflection dynamics. For samples with the same interface quality and almost the same well width, the delay time of the differential reflection decreases with increasing barrier height, while for the sample with rough interface and narrower wells, the delay time of the differential reflection is much slower, although it has a larger barrier height. To understand the experimental results, we have performed a simulation study of temporal and spatial evolutions of photoexcited carriers in the samples, and the influence of various physics processes on the photoexcited carrier dynamics has been discussed. From the calculated and the measured results, we conclude that carrier diffusion in the cap layer and the barriers plays a dominant role in determining the differential reflection dynamics. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Three kinds of coherent phonons (0.30, 1.90, and 3.75 THz) have been observed in silver nanoparticles embedded in BaO thin films by means of the femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe technique. The generation of 0.3 THz coherent phonons is attributed to the resonant excitation of localized surface plasmon of silver nanopaticles, and the resonant impulsive stimulated Raman scattering in silver aggregates is responsible for the generation of 1.90 and 3.75 THz coherent phonons. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the large-scale synthesis of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) using a simple but effective approach. High purity SiNWs of uniform diameters around 15 nm were obtained by sublimating a hot-pressed silicon powder target at 1200 °C in a flowing carrier gas environment. The SiNWs emit stable blue light which seems unrelated to quantum confinement, but related to an amorphous overcoating layer of silicon oxide. Our approach can be used, in principle, as a general method for synthesis of other one-dimensional semiconducting, or conducting nanowires. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Bacillus licheniformis PWD-1, the parent strain, and B. subtilis FDB-29, a recombinant strain. In both strains, keratinase was induced by proteinaceous media, and repressed by carbohydrates. A seed culture of B. licheniformis PWD-1 at early age, 6–10 h, is crucial to keratinase production during fermentation, but B. subtilis FDB-29 is insensitive to the seed culture age. During the batch fermentation by both strains, the pH changed from 7.0 to 8.5 while the keratinase activity and productivity stayed at high levels. Control of pH, therefore, is not necessary. The temperature for maximum keratinase production is 37°C for both strains, though B. licheniformis is thermophilic and grows best at 50°C. Optimal levels of dissolved oxygen are 10% and 20% for B. licheniformis and B. subtilis respectively. A scale-up procedure using constant temperature at 37°C was adopted for B. subtilis. On the other hand, a temperature-shift procedure by which an 8-h fermentation at 50°C for growth followed by a shift to 37°C for enzyme production was used for B. licheniformis to shorten the fermentation time and increase enzyme productivity. Production of keratinase by B. licheniformis increased by ten-fold following this new procedure. After respective optimization of fermentation conditions, keratinase production by B. licheniformis PWD-1 is approximately 40% higher than that by B. subtilis FDB-29.

    Notes: Abstract The tonic discharge of 71 medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurones was recorded in slices of the dorsal brainstem of young adult rats. Bath application of histamine caused a dose-related excitation in 59 of the 71 cells (83%), the remaining 12 (17%) being unresponsive. Dimaprit, a selective H2 agonist, also caused excitation in all 20 cells tested. The histamine-induced excitation and the response to dimaprit were antagonised by the selective H2 antagonist ranitidine, confirming that the H2 subtype of histamine receptor is involved in mediating the effects of histamine on these cells. Triprolidine, a selective H1 antagonist, also antagonised the excitation caused by histamine, at a concentration (0.3 μM) which left the H2 receptor-mediated response to dimaprit unchanged. Thus the excitatory effects of histamine on MVN cells in the rat involve two components mediated through H1 and H2 receptor-linked mechanisms, respectively. Betahistine, a weak H1 agonist and H3 antagonist, had little excitatory action when applied on its own, but significantly reduced the excitation caused by histamine when the two drugs were applied together. The effects of betahistine were consistent with a partial-agonist action at H1 receptors on MVN cells, reducing the excitatory responses to histamine presumably by occupying these receptor sites in competition with the exogenously applied neurotransmitter. This partial-agonist action of betahistine may be an important part of its mechanism of action in the symptomatic treatment of vertigo and motion sickness, since it is likely to occur not only in the MVN but also in many brain regions, including the thalamus and cortex, which express H1 receptors and which are innervated by the hypothalamic histaminergic system. Thus the effectiveness of betahistine and other anti-H1 drugs against motion sickness may be explained by their action in reducing the effects of the excess histamine release induced in such conditions in various brain areas, including the MVN.

    Notes: Summary.  Infection with a mutant Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) strain RP-2ms showed reduced neurovirulence than wild type or RP-9 strains after inoculation in BALB/c mice. However, higher intracellular viral titer was detected in Rp-2ms infected cultured cells. Localizations of non-structural 3 (NS3) and envelope (E) proteins were demonstrated by immunocytochemistry. NS3 protein was primarily found in the pyramidal neurons in cerebrum, in the molecular and granular layers of cerebellum. Neither E nor NS3 protein was detected in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum. Immunoelectron microscopic observations showed that E and NS3 proteins were positive in JEV-induced membranous systems, mainly hypertrophic rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) and membrane vesicle structure (MVS) but not smooth membrane structure. Virus particles were seen in the Golgi apparatus, rER, nuclear envelope, MVS and cytoplasmic vacuoles. Different mechanisms of intracellular trapping in vivo provide a possible basis for attenuation of RP-2ms strains of JEV.

    Notes: Abstract Two novel plasma chemistries, BI 3 and BBr 3 , have been employed for dry etching of LaCaMnO 3 thin films. For both mixtures there is some chemical enhancement of etch rates at low halide compositions in the discharge, and the rates are a strong function of ion/neutral ratio. Maximum rates are obtained at ratios near 0.02. Etch yields are typically low (〈0.3) under inductively-coupled plasma (CICP) conditions. Smooth d surface morphologies are obtained over a wide range of conditions, with high-fidelity pattern transfer using SiO 2 or SiN x masks.
