    Notes: Summary: Autoimmune thyroid disease is one of the most common autoimmune diseases. There is typically patient antibody (Ab) reactivity to one or more of the antigens thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and the thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSFlr). With the advent of combinatorial library technology, there has been an enormous increase in the number of sequences from Ab to Tg and TPO, The repertoire of both Tg and TPO Ab is restricted and indicates the importance of somatic hypermutation in the development of the high affinity, Ab response. However, there are still too few sequences to determine patterns in which the mutation occurs, which residues are introduced during substitution and how individual substitutions affect the affinity of the Ab, Ab to the TSHr are of far greater pathological significance than those to Tg and TPO, but the current repertoire of Ab to the TSHr has yet to include the high affinity IgG Ab characteristic of patient serum Ab, Instructive analysis of the role of somatic hypermutation in the development of TSHr Ab therefore still awaits the isolation of the pathologically active repertoire. Despite this, the Ab response in thyroid autoimmunity remains one of the best characterised of human autoimmune diseases.

    Notes: We have shown that ion beams can be used to probe the surface composition and molecular orientation of liquid surfaces. Time-of-flight analysis of the kinetic energy of scattered inert gas ions and recoil atoms ejected from the surface reveals the identity of atoms in the topmost atomic surface layer of the liquid. In this report we describe the first scattering/recoil experiments on surfaces of a liquid siloxane and glycerol using helium, neon and argon ions in the 2–3 keV energy range. Analysis of peak intensities as a function of experimental parameters can be used to infer average molecular orientations in the surface. Spectra from the liquid siloxane are similar to that reported by Bertrand et al. [J. Phys. Chem. 97, 131 788 (1993)] for the long-chain hydrocarbon hexatriacontane deposited as oriented solid films on Si wafers. Our data indicates that the siloxane backbone is effectively shielded by the attached hydrocarbon groups, and for incoming ions the molecule effectively resembles a hydrocarbon. Recent sum-frequency generation spectroscopy experiments [J. Phys. Chem. B 101, 4607 (1997)] suggest that a glycerol molecule in the liquid is, on average, oriented with the carbon backbone normal to the surface. Our data is consistent with this result, but scattering/recoiling simulations are needed to definitively determine the orientation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This report is an update on a group of 46 clinical trial patients who each received 3 free-standing Endopore® dental implants placed using a 2-stage surgical approach in the anterior mandible. After an initial healing interval of 10 weeks, the implants were used in each case to retain an overdenture, and at the time of the report. all patients had passed 5 years of continuous function. The 5-year cumulative “survival” rate based on a life table analysis was 93.4% and this remained unchanged after 6 years. The 5-year “success rate” was 83.3% when assessed qualitatively with the published criteria of others using a four-field table analysis categorizing every implant in the study as one of “Grade 1 Success”, “survival”, ”unaccounted for” or “failure”. Modified periodontal parameters verified continued peri-implant soft tissue health. No implant still in function had more than 1.8 mm cumulative bone loss during the first 5 years of function. These results provide clear evidence that Endopore® implants despite their short lengths function at least as well as other dental implant 1 designs used in much longer lengths.

    Notes: Abstract In this study, an assessment using modified periodontal indices was done on a group of 48 fully edentulous patients who had each been treated with 3 porous-coated (EndoPoreTM) dental implants and a mandibular overdenture. Parameters assessed included plaque index (PI), sulcular bleeding index (SBI), pocket probing depth (PD), probing attachment level (PAL) and mobility (M) using a Periotest device. At the time of the assessment, all of the patients had passed 3 years of continuous function while 26 had passed 4 years. Approximately 50% of implant surfaces were plaque-free while 79% of surfaces showed no bleeding upon probing. There was no correlation between PI and SBI. The mean PD was 3.1 mm with 64% of sites ≤3.5 mm. Mobility measurements taken with the Periotest device gave a mean PTV of (-4.35) with 96% of measurements (-0.5). No significant correlations were found between mobility and either PAL or implant length.
