    Notes: Summary: Autoimmune thyroid disease is one of the most common autoimmune diseases. There is typically patient antibody (Ab) reactivity to one or more of the antigens thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and the thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSFlr). With the advent of combinatorial library technology, there has been an enormous increase in the number of sequences from Ab to Tg and TPO, The repertoire of both Tg and TPO Ab is restricted and indicates the importance of somatic hypermutation in the development of the high affinity, Ab response. However, there are still too few sequences to determine patterns in which the mutation occurs, which residues are introduced during substitution and how individual substitutions affect the affinity of the Ab, Ab to the TSHr are of far greater pathological significance than those to Tg and TPO, but the current repertoire of Ab to the TSHr has yet to include the high affinity IgG Ab characteristic of patient serum Ab, Instructive analysis of the role of somatic hypermutation in the development of TSHr Ab therefore still awaits the isolation of the pathologically active repertoire. Despite this, the Ab response in thyroid autoimmunity remains one of the best characterised of human autoimmune diseases.

    Notes: Abstract In this study, an assessment using modified periodontal indices was done on a group of 48 fully edentulous patients who had each been treated with 3 porous-coated (EndoPoreTM) dental implants and a mandibular overdenture. Parameters assessed included plaque index (PI), sulcular bleeding index (SBI), pocket probing depth (PD), probing attachment level (PAL) and mobility (M) using a Periotest device. At the time of the assessment, all of the patients had passed 3 years of continuous function while 26 had passed 4 years. Approximately 50% of implant surfaces were plaque-free while 79% of surfaces showed no bleeding upon probing. There was no correlation between PI and SBI. The mean PD was 3.1 mm with 64% of sites ≤3.5 mm. Mobility measurements taken with the Periotest device gave a mean PTV of (-4.35) with 96% of measurements (-0.5). No significant correlations were found between mobility and either PAL or implant length.

    Notes: We have shown that ion beams can be used to probe the surface composition and molecular orientation of liquid surfaces. Time-of-flight analysis of the kinetic energy of scattered inert gas ions and recoil atoms ejected from the surface reveals the identity of atoms in the topmost atomic surface layer of the liquid. In this report we describe the first scattering/recoil experiments on surfaces of a liquid siloxane and glycerol using helium, neon and argon ions in the 2–3 keV energy range. Analysis of peak intensities as a function of experimental parameters can be used to infer average molecular orientations in the surface. Spectra from the liquid siloxane are similar to that reported by Bertrand et al. [J. Phys. Chem. 97, 131 788 (1993)] for the long-chain hydrocarbon hexatriacontane deposited as oriented solid films on Si wafers. Our data indicates that the siloxane backbone is effectively shielded by the attached hydrocarbon groups, and for incoming ions the molecule effectively resembles a hydrocarbon. Recent sum-frequency generation spectroscopy experiments [J. Phys. Chem. B 101, 4607 (1997)] suggest that a glycerol molecule in the liquid is, on average, oriented with the carbon backbone normal to the surface. Our data is consistent with this result, but scattering/recoiling simulations are needed to definitively determine the orientation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have devised and programmed a new scheme based on image processing techniques for extracting the intensity of fluorescent display low-energy electron diffraction spots. The method make no assumptions about spot shape, does not use thresholding, and can deal with badly behaved backgrounds, noise spikes, and dead pixels. All decisions about whether a particular pixel belongs to a spot or to the background are made on purely logical grounds with generally binary operator masks. Once the spot edge has been defined, a local background is subtracted to generate an integrated spot intensity. Extensive tests with diffraction features ranging from very strong to indistinguishable from background by eye show this method to be stable, fast, and reproducible.

    Notes: “Vocation” is a word of varied significance, both secular and religious. Religiously, it can mean God's calling of men into His kingdom through the proclamation of the Gospel, or His calling of particular persons to particular spheres of service such as the Ministry. Secularly, it can mean any trade, profession, or employment that a man may follow, including such occupations as the Ministry. The Latin original of the word, vocatio, and its German equivalent, Beruf, are used in all these senses by Luther, but with important differences. In the first place, the distinction between religious and secular is entirely foreign to his thinking. When he speaks of weltlicher Beruf, or “worldly vocation”, he never thinks of it as either irreligious or non-religious, but as a Divine appointment for our life in this world. In the second place, his conception of vocation includes a great deal more than ours normally does. In one of his sermons he raises the question, what it means to have a vocation. He answers it by saying: You are in a Stand, “station”, you are a married man or woman, a son or daughter, a man-servant or maid-servant; and he goes on to point out what duties such “stations” impose upon us, so that we had four heads and ten hands we should still have quite enough to do. Other lists bf “stations”—or “offices”, as he also calls them—include: the prince, the magistrate, the teacher, the scholar, the father, mother, children, master, servant, and many more.
