Notes: Abstract. Just a few decades ago, the saccharides bound to glycoproteins were considered little more than an irritation. They increased the difficulty of purifying and characterizing proteins, making proteins run as several bands on gels and smearing them on columns. They were considered a nuisance and were typically cleaved away to reveal the ‘important part’, the protein moiety, for structural (e.g. via X-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance) and functional studies. We now realize that the saccharide is often as important as the protein itself, and that glycosylation can have many effects on the function, structure, physical properties and targeting of a protein. There are a myriad of reviews and books on this subject, reflecting the nearly overwhelming number of articles in print discussing saccharide structures, glycoprotein processing enzymes and the biological implications of glycosylation. This review discusses, in turn, the extent and biological relevance of glycosylation; the structures observed; how glycosylated proteins are formed in vivo; the clinical relevance of glycosylation, in terms of the correlations between disease states and unusual glycosylation patterns; and, finally, the molecules, both natural and synthetic, that can be used to study the roles of carbohydrates in glycoprotein structure and function or to disrupt various carbohydrate recognition processes and enzymatic reactions in the glycoprotein synthetic pathway.

Notes: Summary In this prospective study, a series of 1812 consecutive mild head injured adult patients who visited the hospital emergency department were assessed. Twenty-eight patients (1.5%) deteriorated after head injury; 23 of these (1.3% of the series) required surgical intervention. Five patients (0.3%) deteriorated due to non-surgical causes [post-traumatic seizure 2, syndrome of inapproapriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) 3]. Most of the deterioration occurred within the first 24 hours (57%). Post-traumatic headache was found in 280 patients (15.5%) and 84 patients (4.6%) suffered post-traumatic vomiting. The relative risk is calculated. Age over 60, presence of drowsiness, focal motor weakness, post-traumatic headache and vomiting has increased risk of deterioration (p 〈 0.001). This study suggests that post-traumatic headache and vomiting deserve more clinical attention rather than being considered as post-traumatic syndrome only.

Notes: Summary The incidence and clinical significance was studied in 2574 closed head injury patients, each of them having a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) 9 to 12 after trauma. All patients underwent computerized tomography (CT) after being admitted to the emergency service. One hundred and six patients (4.1%) experienced seizures within 1 week after head injury; 46 of these (1.8% of the series) had seizures within 24 hours after trauma. There was no statistically significant difference between the early seizure and seizure free group of patients in gender, age and GCS with the exception of cause of injury (p 〈 0.01). The incidence of intracerebral parenchymal damage was found to be higher with seizures developing between day 2 and day 7 (80%) than those with seizures developing within 24 hours (54.3%). Analysing the data revealed that early posttraumatic seizures were not related to the presence of intracerebral parenchymal damage on CT scan. The occurrence of early seizures did not affect the mortality and outcome of moderate closed head injury patients.

Notes: It has been shown how matrix elements of the form 〈x||exp(−iHt)||y〉 which arise when using operator regularization to do perturbative calculations in quantum field theory can be evaluated using the quantum mechanical path integral (QMPI). This technique has the advantage of eliminating loop momentum integrals and algebraically complicated vertices in gauge theories. A similar (but distinct) approach of Polyakov and Strassler has been applied to one loop processes with external vector particles and is related to the string based methods of Bern and Kosower. In this article, several features of the QMPI technique are examined. First, it is demonstrated how the path ordering in the QMPI can be handled by considering a model of three interacting scalar fields, each with a distinct mass. Next, it is shown how the QMPI can be used when the external wave function is not a plane wave field. The particular case of having an exponentially damped wave function is considered. Next, a discussion of the difference between the approach of Polyakov and Strassler and that employed here is given. Finally, it is demonstrated how the QMPI can be used to considerably simplify calculations in quantum gravity. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A systems analysis technique, called the ‘analytic hierarchy process’, has been employed to develop a wastewater treatment optimization model which enables consideration to be given to subjective factors such as socio-cultural and environmental conditions as well as to technical and economic aspects. The model is particularly applicable to the developing world. Twenty and twenty-two parameters were identified for the selection of wastewater and sludge-treatment alternatives respectively. Forty-six and ninety-four treatment alternatives were formulated as decision variables for the selection for wastewater and sludge treatment respectively. The technique was then employed to select the optimum treatment procedures.

Notes: Commentators on the UK venture capital industry have observed that it has reached a watershed in its development, with the players of the 1980s having to reassess their positions and possibly, in some cases, their continuing viability as independent operators. It has been suggested that increasing numbers of UK venture capitalists are moving towards a more `hands on' approach to post-investment relationships with investees in the hope of improving performance and investment out-turns. Research in the US suggests that the hoped for improvement by this route is not a foregone conclusion. In this paper we examine how a longstanding and successful UK venture capitalist makes a widely publicised `hands-off' approach work -- and how their investees see the approach working. Our research supports the view that, over time, and by a process of feedback learning from post-investment performance monitoring, investees are selected that are compatible with this particular approach. Our findings demonstrate that mutual trust is one of the most vital elements in successful `hands-off' post-investment relationship building -- and that achieving this requires careful and considered nurturing. Moreover, because `hands-on' involvement can be expensive in terms of investor management resources and against the stated investor policy, relationships of the principal--agent type were kept to a minimum as far as was possible consistent with protecting investments.

Notes: We show that ion-damaged GaAs may be used to detect millimeter electromagnetic waves in photoconductive sampling gates. The semi-insulating GaAs material which was implanted with a dose of 1014 cm−2 protons at an energy of 200 keV gave a signal to noise improvement of about 11.4 dB when compared with as-grown semi-insulating GaAs. The improvement is in spite of a reduced carrier mobility in the ion-implanted material and is due to the shorter carrier lifetime and formation of ohmic contacts with the ion-damaged semi-insulating GaAs. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
