    Notes: Neutron Compton profiles were measured of atomic momentum distributions in solid hexafluoroethane (C2F6) at saturated vapor pressure from 20 to 170 K, and of the liquid phase at 180 K. There are conflicting reports in the literature, from different kinds of measurements, about the nature and extent of solid phases of C2F6. Present neutron diffraction and thermal analysis shows that there is a clear crystallographic transformation near 103 K from a higher-temperature body-centered-cubic (bcc) phase which has considerable orientational disorder to a lower-temperature phase of different symmetry, which has relatively little disorder. The C and F atomic momentum profiles are found to have only small dependencies upon temperature and upon condensed phase. They are analyzed in terms of a dominant contribution from intramolecular vibrations plus contributions from translational and rotational motions of molecules. The nature of rotational contributions is of special interest, because of questions about the extent of static versus dynamic disorder in this kind of crystal. Brief comparisons to related solids such as SF6 are made. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A low-energy (550 eV) argon-ion beam was used to directly bombard the backsurface of polysilicon-gate metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors after the completion of all conventional processing steps. The interface characteristics of the MOS capacitors were investigated. The results show that, as the bombardment dose increases, the active dopant concentration near the oxide-semiconductor interface gets higher; maximum midgap energy increases; and interface-state density becomes lower. This simple technique is compatible with existing integrated-circuit processing, and can easily improve the interface characteristics, and therefore the electrical characteristics of MOS devices. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Argon-ion-beam sputtering technique has been applied to deposit barium titanate (BaTiO3) films on silicon wafers at room temperature under vacuum, and then Al/BaTiO3/Si structures were fabricated. Results show that the current and capacitance of these devices are sensitive to the change of relative humidity at room temperature, and saturation absorption (response) time as well as humidity sensitivity of the devices depend on the chemical composition of the BaTiO3 films. For higher annealing temperature and longer annealing time, the oxygen composition increases while fixed charge density decreases. These changes result in lower humidity sensitivity and longer response time. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Simulation studies were conducted to analyse the effects of components of slow-rusting resistance to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis) on wheat varieties using the Slow-Rusting Epidemic Simulation Model (SRESM). Five components, infection efficiency (IE), sporulation capacity (SC), lesion expansion rate (LE), latent period (LP) and infectious period (IP) were studied for their importance in epidemics under various weather and pathogen inoculum conditions. Simulation outputs were analysed statistically. The LE, IE and SC were found to be the most important components. However, final disease was more strongly influenced by weather and initial disease. The Integrated Resistance Index (IRJ), which combines the effects of resistance components, was used to predict the effects of various combinations of components in different types of weather and at different levels of initial disease intensity. These predictions provide guidelines for plant breeders and are useful in selecting varieties for specific regions.

    Notes: Abstract We consider numerical solution methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized by a finite volume method on staggered grids in general coordinates. We use Krylov subspace and multigrid methods as well as their combinations. Numerical experiments are carried out on a scalar and a vector computer. Robustness and efficiency of these methods are studied. It appears that good methods result from suitable combinations of GCR and multigrid methods.

    Notes: The solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general two- and three-dimensional domains using a multigrid method is considered. Because a great variety of boundary-fitted grids may occur, robustness is at a premium. Therefore a new ILU smoother called CILU (collective ILU) is described, based on r-transformations. In CILU the matrix that is factorized is block-structured, with blocks corresponding to the set of physical variables. A multigrid algorithm using CILU as smoother is investigated. The performance of the algorithm in two and three dimensions is assessed by numerical experments. The results show that CILU is a good smoother for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized on general non-orthogonal curvilinear grids.
