    Notes: Summary We report a 69-year-old female with cerebral and cerebellar symptomatology of 15-month duration. At autopsy, both panencephalopathic Creutzfeldt-Jakob and plaque-predominant Alzheimer diseases were found. Plaque amyloid was exclusively of the β/A4 type, but abundant abnormal protease-resistant protein was identified by Western blot analysis of brain extracts.

    Notes: Abstract: DM20 is an abundant CNS myelin-specific protein whose role in myelinogenesis is unknown. We have cloned the DM20 cDNA from adult mouse brain total RNA using the polymerase chain reaction and expressed it in HeLa cells. DM20, detected by immunofluorescence in stable transfectants, is present in some cells in large, intensely fluorescent intracellular clumps that probably represent elements of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. Frequently, intense DM20 fluorescence could be detected at the plasma membrane. These findings are consistent with previous studies demonstrating that an intracellular “pool” of DM20 and its larger isoform, proteolipid protein, exists and that a substantial lag occurs between synthesis and insertion of these proteins into the expanding myelin membrane. Permanent DM20 expressors in contact with one another do not display any ultrastructural rearrangements at regions of cell–cell contact, in contrast to what we have previously reported for P0, a PNS-specific protein shown to mediate adhesion of the extracellular faces of the Schwann cell during PNS myelinogenesis. We believe that these results indicate that if DM20 is indeed an adhesion molecule, this property is likely to be significantly more subtle than P0-mediated adhesion.

    Notes: Conflicting reports regarding the hazards of anaesthesia in children presenting for surgery with an upper respiratory tract infection have appeared in the literature. In the present study 130 children undergoing general anaesthesia with face mask for myringotomy and grommet insertion were graded as having either an acute or recent upper respiratory tract infection or were asymptomatic according to predetermined clinical symptoms and signs. The severity of respiratory and related complications were scored during induction, emergence and recovery. The peripheral oxygen saturation was recorded during induction, emergence, transfer to the recovery ward and in the recovery ward itself. There were no significant differences (p 〉 0.05) in the complication scores between the three groups of children. However, the incidence of hypoxaemia (oxygen saturation ± 93%) was significantly greater during transfer in the acute infection group (p = 0.001) and the recent infection group (p = 0.02), as well as during recovery in the acute group (p = 0.03) compared with asymptomatic children.

    Notes: Summary Motion of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in and around the brain and spinal cord was examined in healthy subjects and in a number of patients with abnormalities of the CSF circulation. The pulsatile motion of the CSF was determined by spin echo phase (velocity) imaging, sometimes in combination with gradient echo phase contrast cine. Differences in flow patterns across CSF spaces were observed: flow reversal in the cerebellomedullary cistern and lumbar area relative to cervical CSF, and in the posterior versus the anterior subarachnoid space in the spinal canal. Flow communication was demonstrated in known communicating cysts or cavities. Differences in flow were also noted across spinal narrowing or block, and across the walls of a variety of cystic lesions in the brain and spinal cord. MR phase imaging of CSF flow provides pathophysiological information of potential clinical importance for the assessment of diseases affecting the CSF circulation.

    Notes: Various conflicting reports in the literature regarding the effect of oxygen on the stability of vinyl acetate (VA) toward polymerization led us to reexamine this topic using both isothermal stability tests and quasi-adiabatic calorimetry. Both commercial VA stabilized with 5-20 ppm by weight of hydroquinone (HQ) and purified, unstabilized VA exhibit lower stability to thermally initiated polymerization (at 50-120°C) in the presence of oxygen than in its absence. However, when stabilized with 3-5 ppm of HQ, both air-saturated and oxygen-free VA exhibit adequate thermal stability at normal transport and storage temperatures (25-50°C). Oxygen destabilization of VA is probably caused by the relatively low stability of VA polyperoxide rather than by the oxidation of acetaldehyde impurity to peroxyacetic acid. The length of VA polymerization induction periods is about -0.4 order in oxygen partial pressure.
