Notes: A Monte Carlo Potts model has been used to investigate cube-texture strengthening during grain growth in rolled high-purity Ni-tapes. The initial conditions for the simulations have been taken from electron back-scatter pattern (EBSP) orientation maps of already fully recrystallized samples. Experimentally, grain growth leads to an increase in the cube volume fraction to 〉95% , accompanied by an approximately ten-fold increase in the grain size. High cube volume fractions can be predicted under a number of conditions, though a small surface energy advantage of just 2% for cube-oriented grains is required to match the texture strengthening to the grain size change. An additional issue of interest is the influence on the grain growth of the large area-fraction of twin boundaries in the fully recrystallized condition. The presence of boundaries with low energy has a strong influence on thesimulated microstructural evolution

Notes: In order to improve the formability of magnesium alloys at low temperatures, a thoroughunderstanding of the twinning behaviour is required. Cylindrical samples were compressed uniaxiallyfrom room temperature to 250oC, with the compression axis parallel to the transverse direction (TD)of a hot-rolled Mg-3Al-1Zn sheet. Twinning was investigated by use of orientation maps constructedfrom electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) data. Tensile twinning was observed at alltemperatures. In some grains two twin variants were observed. For each twin the specific twinningvariant among the 6 possible twinning systems was identified by consideration of the twinningrotation. The twinning was then investigated by comparing the specific twin variant with thecalculated Schmid factors for all 6 possible twin variants. In cases of grains that are completelyreoriented by two twin variants it is possible to back-calculate the initial grain orientation byconsidering all possible twin rotations for both of the twin variants. It was found that the operativetwin variants where those with the highest Schmid factors

Notes: The influence of an electric field on the annealing of high purity (99.999%) cold rollednickel has been investigated. Annealing was carried out for 2 hours at temperatures between 300oCand 800oC with and without an electric field of strength 2.0KVcm-1. The microstructure and fractionof cube texture resulting were characterized using electron backscattering pattern (EBSP) technique.Annealing in an electric field leads to somewhat smaller average values of the cube fraction and grainsizes compared to annealing without an electric field. The highest temperature (800oC) annealing inan electric field results in microstructures with a lower fractional twin boundary length

Notes: The dependence on the grain orientation of the alignment of planar dislocationboundaries in plastically deformed metals has been investigated by examining grains of Sorientation ({123}〈63-4〉) in cold-rolled polycrystalline aluminum. For the ideal S orientation the{111} slip plane associated with the highest resolved shear stress lies either at +40° or -40° to therolling direction in the longitudinal section, with two S variants corresponding to each case.Boundary traces in S orientation grains in the rolled sample were examined by the combined use ofelectron channeling contrast imaging and electron backscatter diffraction orientation mapping. Ineach case the +/- sense of the observed planar boundary traces matched that of the {111} slip planewith the highest resolved shear stress showing that the alignment of the boundaries ispredominantly controlled by crystallographic rather than macroscopic considerations

Notes: A pure Ni single crystal of Cube orientation (001)/[100] have been deformed byreversible cold rolling to a reduction of 98% following an initial extrusion treatment. Themicrostructure in the as-deformed samples and in partly recrystallized specimens have beencharacterized in the scanning electron microscope using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD).Line scans along the normal direction across the sample thickness show some evidence for amacroscopic pattern of subdivision. The EBSD measurements show that the deformed sample ischaracterized by large jumps in orientation between alternating S and Br orientations, related bymisorientation angles of 50°~60°. In part of the sample a background cumulative change inorientation is seen, though local large change in orientation are also still seen. In annealed samplesit is found that the orientations of the new grains

Notes: Polycrystalline nickel (99.999% purity) cold-rolled to a reduction of 96% has been givena two-step annealing treatment consisting of a pre-annealing at 180 °C or 220 °C for 2 hours, followed by a final annealing at 300 °C for 10 minutes. The changes in microstructure and textureduring annealing have been followed using electron backscatter diffraction orientationmeasurements taken on the longitudinal section of the samples. The results suggest thatpre-annealing at low temperature can enhance the formation recrystallized grains of cubeorientation. Based on an analysis of the experimental data, possible reasons for the enhancement asa result of pre-annealing in the formation of cube orientation grains are discussed

Notes: Abstract Numerous systems of land classification have been proposed. Most have led directly to or have been driven by an author's philosophy of earth-forming processes. However, the practical need of classifying land for planning and management purposes requires that a system lead to predictions of the results of management activities. We propose a landscape classification system composed of 11 units, from realm (a continental mass) to feature (a splash impression). The classification concerns physical aspects rather than economic or social factors; and aims to merge land inventory with dynamic processes. Landscape units are organized using a hierarchical system so that information may be assembled and communicated at different levels of scale and abstraction. Our classification uses a geomorphic systems approach that emphasizes the geologic-geomorphic attributes of the units. Realm, major division, province, and section are formulated by subdividing large units into smaller ones. For the larger units we have followed Fenneman's delineations, which are well established in the North American literature. Areas and districts are aggregated into regions and regions into sections. Units smaller than areas have, in practice, been subdivided into zones and smaller units if required. We developed the theoretical framework embodied in this classification from practical applications aimed at land use planning and land management in Maryland (eastern Piedmont Province near Baltimore) and Utah (eastern Uinta Mountains).

Notes: The effect of orientation noise in EBSP data on measurement of percolation thresholdvalues has been investigated by use of computer simulated microstructures. A 2-D Monte Carlo Potts model run on a square lattice of size 200 x 200 was used to generate a microstructure containing approximately 150 grains. Orientations were then assigned to each of these grains to generate single texture component microstructures of differing texture tightness (“model” data). In order to simulatethe effect of orientation noise on the experimental data, the orientation at each point in the 200 x 200 grid was adjusted in a manner consistent with experimental observations of the effect of orientation noise. The model data represent therefore an underlying real grain structure, and the noise-adjusted data represent the orientation map that would be measured using EBSP analysis at a given orientationnoise level. The misorientation angle q70% at which 70% of the grains were percolatively connected was then determined for both the ideal data and for the orientation noise adjusted data. A comparison of the two allows calibration of the extent to which percolation data may be incorrectly estimated by EBSP measurements

Notes: In this paper we report a study using fully automated EBSP orientation measurements onthe texture and microstructure of fully processed Bi-2223 tapes produced by the powder-in-tubemethod. For the automated analysis a new unit cell describing the quasi-tetragonal Bi-2223 phase hasbeen developed. The texture data confirm that a strong fibre texture is produced during processing, with the c-axis of the Bi2223 plates parallel to the tape normal direction. Quantitative analysissuggests that the orientation density along the fibre texture is close to random. In contrast the distribution of misorientations shows significant correlations between the orientations, and is skewed towards low misorientation angles. A more detailed investigation reveals that the structure consists of colonies of plates, with low angle misorientations within each colony. Analysis of the rotation axes shows some differences as a function of misorientation angle
