Notes: Thin-film thermocouples were produced on flexible polymeric and paper substrates using evaporation techniques. These devices were found to be simple to produce, durable, and to have good temperature sensitivity. These devices allow the temperature and thermal conductivity of thin coatings to be determined in a variety of processes with minimal impact to the process or loss of heat through the leads.

Notes: Summary. The distribution of epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) on normal and abnormal endometrial tissue was studied as a method for distinguishing atypical hyperplasia from adenocarcinoma. Histological sections from 47 patients (nine adenocarcinoma, ninc atypical hyperplasia, nine cystic hyperplasia, 19 normal endomctrium and one sircoma) were studied with an immunocytochemical alkaline phosphatase technique that derrionstratcd EMA. At adilution of 1:1000 the majority of normal tissue was negative whereas all the abnormal tissue stained positively. At a slightly higher dilution all adenocarcinomas expressed thc antigen although only a few of the hyperplastic lesions (16%) stained with the antibody. The value of this approach for automated screening is discusscd.

Notes: The shapes and motion of immiscible bubbles in a Hele–Shaw cell driven by the motion of the surrounding fluid were studied. Six classes of steady shapes, some of which are remarkable, were observed. Multiple steady states exist over some ranges of parameters and the shape as a function of speed may slow hysteresis. The observed translational velocities do not agree with available theory, but some of the shapes are in qualitative agreement with those computed by Tanveer [Phys. Fluids 29, 3537 (1986)].

Notes: Narrow fingers that occupy much less than one-half the cell width have been observed in a carefully prepared Hele–Shaw cell. These fingers sometimes show dendritic instability. They are in most respects similar to those produced artificially by Couder et al. [Phys. Rev. A 34, 5175 (1986); Europhys. Lett. 2, 437 (1986)] and are believed to represent a new class of solutions to the shape selection problem.

Notes: Post-instability viscous fingering in rectilinear flow in a Hele–Shaw cell has been studied experimentally. Of particular interest was the characterization of the range of length scales associated with tip splitting, over a reasonably wide range of parameters. A digital imaging system was used to record the patterns as a function of time, which allowed properties such as the tip velocity, finger width, perimeter, and area to be studied as functions of time and capillary number. The tip velocity was observed to be approximately constant regardless of the occurrence of splitting events, and the average finger width decreased as the degree of supercriticality increased. Quantitative measures of the fact that there is a limit to the complexity of viscous fingers are provided, and that over the range of parameters studied, no evidence for fractal fingering exists. A discussion of the dynamics of tip splitting explains why this is so.

Notes: To determine the effect of bacterial colonization on venous ulcer healing, 82 patients with 100 venous ulcerated limbs were each studied prospectively for six months. Despite bacteriological swab results, topical or systemic antibiotics were not administered unless cellulitis supervened. Initial ulcer size, length of ulcer history and time to complete healing of colonized and uncolonized ulcers were determined and compared.Organisms were cultured from 83 limbs prior to commencement of treatment, the commonest isolates being Staptiytococcus aureaus (48%), mixed coliforms (28%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21%) and anaerobes (17%). When compared with ulcers with no bacterial growth, colonized ulcers were of longer duration (P◂0.01), had a larger initial size (p◂0.001) and had significantly longer healing time (p◂0.001). When analysed individually beta-haemolytic streptococci, anaerobes, Staptiylococcus aureus and coliforms were associated with delayed healing. Delayed healing was not found with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, although pseudomonas-colonized ulcers were significantly larger and of longer duration than uncolonized ulcers.Bacterial colonization is associated with delayed venous ulcer healing. To further clarify the pathogenicity of colonizing bacteria, however, the effect of their eradiction on healing of venous ulcers needs to be established.

Notes: Abstract There are no published methods on plasmid isolation from Peptostreptococcus spp., therefore two methods of plasmid isolation from this genera were analysed: the boiling and alkaline-SDS methods. Plasmid DNA was not recovered by the boiling method, however, with the alkaline-SDS method, cryptic plasmid DNA was detected in two P. asaccharolyticus and one P. magnus strains. To achieve optimum lysis, Peptostreptococcus cells were treated with lysozyme (2 mg/ml) for 15 min. at 37°C followed by proteinase K (0.2 mg/ml) for 1 h at 37°C. In addition we report, the occurence of clindamycin or metronidazole-resistant peptostreptococci, but these phenotypes were not correlated with plasmid carriage.
