Notes: A La-deficient manganite perovskite sample La0.54Ca0.32MnO3−δ was prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. The Curie temperature TC is 272 K, about 10 K higher than that of La1−xCaxMnO3. A large magnetic entropy change has been observed and the maximum −ΔSM(approximate)2.9 J/kg K appears at its Curie temperature upon a 0.9 T magnetic field change. The easy fabrication and higher chemical stability make La0.54Ca0.32MnO3−δ a suitable candidate as a working substance in magnetic refrigeration technology. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Anisotropic materials made from stacked macrocycles have potential applications as organic conductors and nonlinear optical materials. Using self-consistent-field local density theory, we have been exploring the ground and excited state electronic structures of metal substituted tetraazaporphyrins, phthalocyanines, and tetrabenzoporphyrins. The calculated and measured polarized optical absorption peaks are in satisfactory agreement. The theoretical dipole oscillator strengths provide absolute intensities for verification of transition assignments, which are helpful for identifying low-lying states and excitation mechanisms.

Notes: This study compared effects amino acid structure and type on the pasting properties and crystallinity of rice starch isolated from flour. Amino acids were added at 2 and 6% of the starch (dry basis) for RVA analyses. Charged amino acids had more of an influence on pasting properties than neutral amino acids. Our results indicated that the negatively charged amino acids had a similar effect as that of the positive charged amino acids for decreasing cooking stability of the starch, but opposite effects on retrogradation tendency. Charged amino acids increased the crystallinity of the starch, potentially enhancing resistant starch nature.

Notes: Chinese perch are one of the most valuable food fish in China, but the sole source of feed for intensive culture is live prey fish. Our previous studies on systematic sensory physiology revealed that this species have a mechanism for this peculiar feeding habit. In the present study, a specific training procedure was designed, and both experimental (initial body weight 171.0 g; 120 days) and commercial (initial body weight 52.4 g; 240 days) net-cage cultures were conducted to investigate the training success, growth performance and survival of the trained yearlings fed with nonlive or Oregon-type moist diet. The training successes of minced prey fish and the Oregon moist diet were 100 and 89.9%, respectively, in experimental culture, and 92.2 and 83.5% in commercial culture. In an experimental trial, the fish fed minced prey fish or the Oregon moist diet attained final body weights of 472.7 g or 344.7 g, although the specific growth rates of these groups were significantly lower than that of the fish fed live prey fish (final body weight 560.0 g). Mortality was not significantly related to dietary treatment. In commercial culture, the final body weights were as follows: 750 g on live prey fish, 705 g on minced prey fish and 651 g on the Oregon moist diet. Feed costs to produce 1 kg fish were estimated to be US$6.59 for live prey fish, US$1.76 for minced prey fish and US$2.07 for the Oregon moist diet. The results of the present study confirmed that sensory modality and associative learning appear to be critical factors in determining food discrimination of Chinese perch, indicating that both minced trash fish and Oregon-type moist diet can be substituted for live prey fish in intensive commercial production.

Notes: Summary In an X-ray diffraction investigation, the recrystallization behavior of ball-milled Chinese southern pine wood was found to differ from that of cellulose. The crystallinity of lignocellulose milled for a very long time and recrystallized by wetting in water did not decrease with increasing milling time as was the case with milled cellulose. In addition, it appeared that the presence of lignin tended to restrict the amorphous cellulose produced by milling from recrystallizing into Cellulose II, whereas it had no influence on the recrystallization into Cellulose I. These results were discussed in the context of the mechanism of the conversion of Cellulose I to Cellulose II.

Notes: Abstract A new method was developed to determine simultaneously the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat, and calorific intensity of the organ or tissue of a living body either in vivo or in vitro with a thin hot probe. By using the method, the thermophysical properties and calorific intensities of a human palm and in vivo liver and a kidney, heart, brain, and foreleg and hindleg muscles of an anesthetized canine were measured. It is concluded that there are no significant differences in the thermophysical properties of organ or tissue of a living body either in vivo or in vitro. The measured thermophysical properties are in good agreement with those reported in the literature.

Notes: Abstract. The highly sensitive GASP array at the INFN Legnaro Laboratory was used to study the $\gamma$ -ray de-excitation of neutron-rich nuclei produced in the deep-inelastic processes which occur when 230 MeV 36S ions interact with a target of 176Yb. Yrast decay schemes were identified in over forty target-like fragments and in over twenty projectile-like fragments. Analysis of the data has resulted in extensions to the yrast decay sequences of the target-like species, 176Hf, 166Er, 172Yb, and 152Sm. New transitions have also been observed in a number of projectile-like species including 34P and 41Cl. Experimental results are compared with the results of shell model calculations.

Notes: Abstract. A variational approach is used to study the surface states of electrons in a semi-infinite polar semiconductor under hydrostatic pressure. The effective Hamiltonian and the surface-state levels are derived including the effects of electron-optical phonon interaction and pressure. The numerical computation has been performed for the surface-state energies versus pressure for zinc-blende GaN, AlN, and InN. The results show that the effect of electron-optical phonon interaction lowers the surface-state energy. It is also found that the effect of electron-surface optical phonon interaction is much bigger than the effect of electron-half space longitudinal optical phonon interaction for surface-state levels. It indicates that the surface-state energies and the influence of electron-phonon interaction increase with pressure obviously.

Notes: Abstract: High-spin states in neutron-rich Dy isotopes, populated in deep-inelastic processes produced by the interaction of 234 MeV 37Cl ions with a 160Gd target, have been studied using the highly sensitive EUROBALL IV gamma-ray detector array. The previously known level schemes for 159,160,161,162Dy have been extended to significantly higher spin ( ? 30?) and the i 13/2 band crossing in 159Dy has been observed for the first time. The experimental results are discussed within the framework of cranked shell model and projected shell model calculations with particular reference to the observed delayed band crossing in 162Dy.
