    Notizen: Rayleigh scattering (λ=488 nm) is observed in single-crystal Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 (SBN:61). In particular, the scattered intensity is measured as a function of temperature across the ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition. The results show that the scattered intensity can vary by as much as two orders of magnitude in passing through the transition. The particular form of the intensity-vs-temperature curve is found to depend on the poling history of the crystal. The unpoled crystal exhibits a rapid change from strong scattering below the transition (ferroelectric state) to weak scattering above the transition (paraelectric state). The measured inflection point is near 63 °C upon heating and near 58 °C upon cooling. In this case the scattering is predominantly attributed to the presence of high-density ferroelectric domains, which vanish above the transition. If the crystal is thermally poled (by cooling through the transition with an electric field applied), it shows no measurable domain scattering but does exhibit strong central-peak behavior at 65 °C upon heating and 59 °C upon cooling. Despite repeated cycling through the transition, the previously thermally poled crystal consistently displays central-peak behavior. The results suggest that thermal poling in SBN followed by thermal depoling produces a significant increase in the average ferroelectric domain size when compared to the unpoled crystal.

    Notizen: Abstract: The N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor possesses two distinct amino acid recognition sites, one for glutamate and one for glycine, which appear to be allosterically linked. Using rat cortex/hippocampus P2 membranes we have investigated the effect of glutamate recognition site ligands on [3H]glycine (agonist) and (±)4-trans-2-car-boxy-5,7-dichloro-4-[3H]phenylaminocarbonylamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline ([3H]l-689,560; antagonist) binding to the glycine site and the effect of glycine recognition site ligands on l-[3H]glutamate (agonist), dl-3-(2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)-[3H]propyl-1 -phosphonate ([3H]-CPP; “C-7” antagonist), and cis-4-phosphonomethyl-2-[3H]piperidine carboxylate ([3H]CGS-19755; “C-5” antagonist) binding to the glutamate site. “C-7” glutamate site antagonists partially inhibited [3H]l-689,560 binding but had no effect on [3H]glycine binding, whereas “C-5” antagonists partially inhibited the binding of both radioligands. Glycine, d-serine, and d-cycloserine partially inhibited [3H]CGS-19755 binding but had little effect on l-[3H]-glutamate or [3H]CPP binding, whereas the partial agonists (+)-3-amino-1-hydroxypyrrolid-2-one [(+)-HA-966], 3R-(+)cis-4-methyl-HA-966 (l-687,414), and 1-amino-1-carboxycyclobutane all enhanced [3H]CPP binding but had no effect on [3H]CGS-19755 binding, and (+)-HA-966 and l-687,414 inhibited l-[3H]glutamate binding. The association and dissociation rates of [3H]l-689,560 binding were decreased by CPP and d-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (“C-5”). Saturation analysis of [3H]l-689,560 binding carried out at equilibrium showed that CPP had little effect on the affinity or number of [3H]l-689,560 binding sites. These results indicate that complex interactions occur between the glutamate and glycine recognition sites on the NMDA receptor. In addition, mechanisms other than allosterism may underlie some effects, and the possibility of a steric interaction between CPP and [3H]l-689,560 is discussed.

    Notizen: The aim of the study was to explore the relationships between early attachment between mother and daughter, the adult daughter's general anxiety level, and characteristics of the helping interaction between the adult daughter and her elderly mother on the one hand and the quality of this help on the other. One sample consisted of 46 Swedish women (mean age: 55 years) who acted as informal caregivers for their elderly mothers. A second sample consisted of 106 Swedish female nursing students (mean age: 27 years). The participants rated the quality of the practical, physical and psychosocial help they gave their elderly mothers (imagined helping activities in a predefined situation among the nursing students). Subjects also rated their mother's degree of caring and overprotection in childhood, their own trait anxiety, and various characteristics of their helping interactions. A high degree of motherly caring and a low degree of motherly overprotection in childhood covaried with a lower level of trait anxiety in the adult daughters. These conditions, in turn, covaried with mutual friendliness during the helping interactions. All these conditions covaried with high-quality psychosocial support. The quality of practical help and physical caring covaried with friendliness during the helping interactions only.

    Notizen: Calorimetric, thermomechanical, and rheological properties of undercooled liquid Pd40Ni40P20 were determined within a wide temperature range above the glass transition. The concept of the limiting fictive temperature was applied to the entire set of measurements to compare the different properties adequately. It was found that an equilibrium state of a sample that is defined by its calorimetric glass temperature corresponds to a similar equilibrium state for the specific volume and for the shear viscosity as well. The Kauzmann temperature as one of the most important material characteristics concerning the glass transition could be determined with high accuracy leading to the evaluation of the free volume persistent in the samples. Viscosity values of the liquid extending over a range of about nine orders in magnitude could be described best by the free volume theory evaluated by Cohen and Grest, provided that experimentally obtained parameters were used for the calculations. The comparison between nonequilibrium measurements at isochronous heating and model calculations in the framework of bimolecular reaction kinetics shows that good agreement can be achieved using thermodynamic parameters that have been obtained from equilibrium measurements. However, systematic deviations indicate also the limitations of the model that are related to the intrinsic dynamic heterogeneity of the vitreous state. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have studied, both in theory and experiment, the operational behavior of continuous wave CO2 lasers by monitoring the ro-vibrational state manifold of the pumping gas N2 by coherent antiStokes Raman scattering (CARS). Detailed information has been gained about the interaction between cavity photons and vibrationally excited N2(X) states for two types of sealed-off and diffusion-cooled CO2 lasers: a radiofrequency excited waveguide laser and a conventional, direct current excited version. CARS spectroscopy permits for the first time an impressive demonstration of the cooling effect of the intracavity photon flux on the vibrationally coupled v=1 state of N2 and the upper laser level involving the asymmetric stretching mode of the CO2 molecule. The kinetic model calculations indicate that the electron number density and electron temperature in the CO2 waveguide laser are higher than usually assumed in the literature.

    Notizen: Supersonic fluid flow and the interaction of strong shock waves to produce jets of material are ubiquitous features of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), astrophysics, and other fields of high energy-density science. The availability of large laser systems provides an opportunity to investigate such hydrodynamic systems in the laboratory, and to test their modeling by radiation hydrocodes. We describe experiments to investigate the propagation of a structured shock front within a radiation-driven target assembly, the formation of a supersonic jet of material, and the subsequent interaction of this jet with an ambient medium in which a second, ablatively driven shock wave is propagating. The density distribution within the jet, the Kelvin–Helmholz roll-up at the tip of the jet, and the jet's interaction with the counterpropagating shock are investigated by x-ray backlighting. The experiments were designed and modeled using radiation hydrocodes developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory, AWE, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The same hydrocodes are being used to model a large number of other ICF and high energy-density physics experiments. Excellent agreement between the different simulations and the experimental data is obtained, but only when the full geometry of the experiment, including both laser-heated hohlraum targets (driving the jet and counter-propagating shock), is included. The experiments were carried out at the University of Rochester's Omega laser [J. M. Soures et al., Phys. Plasmas 3, 2108 (1996)]. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
