Notes: Models and calculated results are presented for the flux-pinning-induced magnetostriction in type-II superconductors. Three models are considered for the critical state; the original Bean model, the Kim model, and the exponential model in which the critical current density is assumed to depend exponentially on the flux density. The analytic expressions of the length change under the magnetic field are derived for specimens having infinite slab geometry and under the assumption that the reversible part of the total magnetization is negligibly small. The results are used for computer simulations and the hysteresis loops are calculated over a wide range of the relevant parameters. Since the pinning-induced magnetostriction reveals the pinning force directly, the hysteresis loops for each model have different features which are discussed in detail. It is also shown that the pinning force of the sample can be directly inferred from the width of the magnetostriction hysteresis loop. Finally, the experimental results on high-temperature superconductors are discussed in comparison with the calculated results.

Notes: Magnetization curves of single crystals (La1−xSrx)2CuO4 with various Sr contents were measured. A distinct increase of magnetization with increasing applied field was observed in Sr overdoped compositions, when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the CuO2 plane. The field, Bpk , where magnetization showed a maximum value, was strongly dependent on temperature. Its dependence was expressed by a universal relation (square root of)Bpk = c(x)[1−T/Tc(x)] over a wide temperature range; between 4.2 K and Tc. Possible mechanisms which give rise to the observed distinct secondary peak effect are discussed.

Notes: The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity of a C60 single crystal is presented in this letter. The single-crystal samples free from solvent contamination were grown up to a size of millimeters order by sublimation of C60 powder with oscillation of the crystal temperature. The electrical conductivity of the single crystal was measured at temperatures between 250 and 295 K. The sharp decrease of the electrical conductivity with temperature around 256 K was observed in association with the phase transition of C60.

Notes: [Auszug] A dissipation-free current can be achieved in a superconductor only when tiny magnetic vortices, which penetrate the superconductor when a magnetic field is applied, are pinned down against current-induced force. To investigate the mechanism by which such vortex pinning occurs, we have made ...

Notes: Abstract C70 single crystals, free from solvent contamination, were grown via vapor phase transport technique. The (0001) face of the C70 crystal was imaged with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient atmosphere. Low-resolution images of a freshly prepared crystal revealed well-ordered faceted regions with multiple terraces extending over a region of several hundred square nanometers. The terraced structure in the images indicates that the crystals formed as a layer growth. In the high-resolution images, C70 molecules were resolved in a hexagonal close packed (hcp) structure with an average center-to-center distance of 10.5±0.5 Å. After one month's exposure to the ambient atmosphere, the molecules rearranged into a mixed structure consisting of hcp and face centered cubic (fcc) regions.

Notes: 2 and 1T-TaSe2were probed by variable temperature UHV-STM. In 1T-TaS2, which indicates a metal-Mott insulator transition at 180 K, the impurity image varied drastically depending on its electronic structure: in its metallic phase, defects were imaged as less-conducting regions with a lateral size of ∼2 nm, while in the insulating phase spherically oscillating structures were frequently found (Friedel oscillation). The dimensions of oscillation, being ∼15 nm in period and ∼1 nm in amplitude, were substantially larger than those reported in normal metals. On the other hand, the 1T-TaSe2 crystals examined here showed both metallic and insulating behavior at room temperature, depending on their surface conditions. The enhanced Friedel oscillation was encountered only on the insulating surfaces. These observations are consistent with the theoretical model proposed by Kobayashi, in which low-energy excitations with small wavenumbers play an important role in enhancing the Friedel oscillation.

Notes: 60 single crystals. The (111) and the (001) faces of C60 single crystals were illuminated with photons with energies below the band gap (generation of Frenkel-type excitons) or above the band gap. In the case of sub-band-gap illumination, reconstructed surfaces formed on the crystals. The reconstruction was represented by fringes running in the [11 ] and [0 0] directions on the (111) and (001) surfaces, respectively. As a result of supra-band-gap illumination, however, there appeared only cracks, without any fringes, which were oriented in directions characteristic of each face. The results suggest that the photo-induced surface reconstruction of C60 single crystals is induced via the recombination of Frenkel-type excitons.
