Notes: In1−xGaxSb1−yBiy (0〈x≤0.21, 0〈y≤0.005) quaternary bulk single crystals were grown on InSb seed crystals using a rotary Bridgman method. In order to investigate the quality of these crystals, various kinds of measurements were carried out, such as optical microscope, x-ray topograph, four-crystal x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy. All grown crystals were 10 mm in diameter and more than 10 mm in length. This indicates that the rotary Bridgman method was useful to grow quaternary bulk single crystals. Owing to segregation, the compositional ratio of Bi (y) increased and that of Ga (x) decreased as crystals grew. During growth of InGaSbBi, both Ga and Bi diffused into the InSb seed and there appeared domains of InBi. For comparison, InSb1−yBiy (0〈y≤0.05) and In1−xGaxSb (0〈x≤0.16) were grown on InSb. It turned out that Bi did not diffuse into InSb without Ga, but Ga diffused without Bi. The incorporation of Ga produced the excess In and as a result InBi domains were formed.

Notes: An extremely low-threshold current of 6 mA in cw mode at 22 °C was achieved in 1.55-μm InGaAsP/InP buried heterostructure distributed feedback lasers with a first-order grating and a normal cavity length of 300 μm. These lasers exhibited an average differential efficiency of 30% total at 4 mW without any coating on the facets, and a T0 (25–70 °C) value of 55 K. A spectral linewidth as low as 8 MHz at cw mode was obtained. The lasers showed high-speed pulse modulation response to 2.4 Gb/s (NRZ).

Notes: Summary Xamoterol acts as aβ 1-adrenoceptor agonist at low sympathetic activity and as an antagonist at high activity. Although its long-term efficacy has been proven in patients with mild to moderate heart failure, it remains unclear which effect, agonism or antagonism, accounts for its long-term activity. To clarify the effect of xamoterol on cardiac sympathetic activity in daily life, 24-h R-R interval histograms were obtained during administration of xamoterol 100 mg b. d. for 1 week to 10 patients with mild to moderate heart failure. Eight normal subjects were also studied as controls. To examine the relation between the effect of xamoterol and sympathetic activity, plasma noradrenaline (NA) levels were measured under 5 graded conditions simulating daily living. Xamoterol administration significantly decreased the standard deviation of the R-R interval, both in patients with heart failure and in normal subjects. The mean R-R interval, however, was increased in patients with heart failure, relative to normal subjects. In both groups, the R-R interval histograms had two peaks, i. e. a short daytime peak and a long night-time peak. Xamoterol decreased the median of the night-time peak without changing the daytime peak in normal subjects. In contrast, it increased the median of the daytime peak without producing a significant change in the nighttime peak in patients with heart failure. Levels of plasma NA were significantly higher in patients than in normal subjects under all conditions. Thus, in normal subjects xamoterol predominantly increased the slower heart rate at night with only a minor effect on the higher heart rate in the daytime, whereas it predominantly attenuated the daytime tachycardia induced by sympathetic stimulation in patients with heart failure. It is concluded that xamoterol tends overall to act as aβ-adrenoceptor antagonist during the day, especially in the daytime in patients with mild to moderate heart failure. Its antagonist rather than its agonist effect may account for the long-term efficacy of xamoterol in patients with mild to moderate heart failure.

Notes: In order to investigate the hydrogen gas effect on non-propagation phenomena of a type 304 austenitic stainless steel, fatigue tests with in-situ observation using a Scanning Laser Microscope were performed in air, in 0.18MPa hydrogen gas and in 0.18MPa nitrogen gas. A nonpropagating crack was observed during the fatigue test in air. At almost the same stress level of non-propagating in air, non-propagating cracks were also observed in fatigue tests in hydrogen and in nitrogen. Stress level of the non-propagation is not sufficiently different in the three environments. However, the process up to non-propagation differs from each other, for example, the crack path and debris

Notes: Summary The distribution of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor protein (mAChR) in the rat forebrain and upper brainstem was described by using a monoclonal antibody (M35) raised against mAChR purified from bovine forebrain homogenates. A method is investigated for light microscopic (LM) and electronmicroscopic (EM) immunocytochemical visualization of reactivity to mAChR-proteins. Putative cholinoceptive neurons including their dendrites were found immunoreactive in the cortical mantle, hippocampus, basal ganglia, amygdala, thalamus and several midbrain regions. In the neocortex, immunoprecipitate with M35 was mainly present in layer 5 pyramidal cells, some layer 3 pyramidal neurons and layer 2 stellate cells, all including their characteristic dendritic profiles of both basal and apical dendrites. In the hippocampus, a variety of pyramidal, granular and non-pyramidal celltypes were stained in various hippocampal cell layers, in the dentate hilus and in stratum oriens of cornu ammonis. Moreover, positively reacting cells occurred in central and lateral amygdala, all parts of the basal ganglia and ventral pallidum. The thalamus was very richly provided with labeled neurons in several nuclei but notably numerous in the ventrolateral, anteroventral and geniculate nuclei. In cortex and hippocampus also some staining of astrocytes occurred. Electron microscopic study of the intracellular distribution of M35 immunoreactivity in all cases showed dense precipitates in the soma cytoplasm in close association with the golgi apparatus, but conspicuous absence near the endoplasmic reticulum. Immunoprecipitate can be followed within the dendritic tree along the microtubular transport system, up to proximal and distal postsynaptic membrane positions, apposing non labeled presynaptic endings. Muscarinic receptor subtype recognition by M35 will be discussed by comparing M35 distribution with cholinergic innervation patterns, muscarinic receptor ligand binding studies and localization of muscarinic receptor subtype mRNAs.

Notes: Summary In the present paper we review immunocytochemical methods for anterograde tracing with the lectin Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin (PHA-L), combined PHA-L tracing — neurotransmitter immunocytochemistry, and the immunocytochemical localization of receptor proteins. These methods will be mainly illustrated by examples from tracing- and neurotransmitter studies on the cholinergic basal forebrain system. The morphology of PHA-L labeled neurons strongly resembles that of Golgi impregnated neurons. The complete axonal trajectories and patterns of presynaptic endings of PHA-L labeled neurons are visualized, both for light- and electron microscopic application. PHA-L-tracing can very well be combined with second immunocytochemical labeling procedures. In this way, traced pathways can be studied in their relation to chemically identified fiber systems or target neurons. Application of immunocytochemistry for the localization of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor, albeit in its early stages, holds great promise for the near future.

Notes: Summary We found that large cells in the dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia contained glutamate-like immunoreactivity. Immunoreactive neurons were not detected in the superior cervical or pterygopalatine ganglia. These findings indicated that glutamate is a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator of large cells of sensory ganglia.

Notes: Summary It has been found that a propylene-vinylsilane copolymer (a few mole % of vinlysilane) is crosslinked by radiation (γ-ray or electron beam) effectively. The mixture of the copolymer and a propylene homopolymer has been also crosslinked by radiation. It is proposed that the crosslinking reaction is due to the coupling of silyl-radical of vinylsilane unit with carbon-radical of propylene unit.
