    Notizen: The contribution of Gd and/or (Fe,Co) to the saturation magnetostriction constant λs of pseudobinary Gdx(Fe100−yCoy)100−x (9〈x〈65, y=100, 74,38, or 0) films has been examined by substituting nonmagnetic Y for Gd or nonmagnetic Cu for (Fe,Co) and comparing λs of these alloys at 300 and 80 K. The magnetostriction of Gdx(Fe,Co)100−x as well as Yx(Fe,Co)100−x films are positive and the composition (x) dependence of λs in Gd alloys is similar to Y alloys, but λs of Gd alloys are larger than Y alloys. It was further found that GdxCu100−x (35〈x〈60) shows positive λs at 80 K. These facts indicate positive contribution of Gd to λs in amorphous Gd-(Fe,Co) alloys.

    Notizen: Perpendicular anisotropy in bias modulated ErCo sputtered films has been investigated. A ErCo single layer film with or without substrate bias has in-plane magnetization, while a multilayered film formed by the bias modulation has perpendicular magnetization when the modulation period is in the range of 30–60 A(ring). The perpendicular anisotropy is thought to originate in the interface and the value of interface anisotropy Ks is estimated to be 0.01–0.02 erg/cm2.

    Notizen: The thermal stability of Pt/Co multilayered films with various underlayers has been studied by annealing up to 400 °C. In Pt/Co films sputtered on glass or amorphous AlN underlayers, their coercivity and the squareness of magnetic hysteresis loops are degraded by annealing above 300 °C. In contrast, in films sputtered on ZnO or Pt underlayers, the coercivity is remarkably increased by annealing at 300 °C. The film with the ZnO underlayer shows a hysteresis loop with perfect squareness even after annealing at 400 °C. The results of x-ray diffraction indicate that the ZnO underlayer not only enhances the fcc Pt/Co(111) orientation but also prevents the decay of the multilayered structure during annealing. The results of laser microannealing using a conventional disk drive system also indicate that the Pt/Co films with ZnO underlayers have superior resistance to laser damage.

    Notizen: Nd-Co and Nd-FeCo amorphous films are known to have larger Kerr rotation θk at shorter wavelength and ultraviolet light compared with other RE-TM (rare earth-transition) amorphous films. This property is desirable for MO (magneto-optical) media for the next generation. In order to satisfy the perpendicular magnetization condition, we replaced a part of Nd by Gd to decrease the saturation magnetization Ms and applied the multilayer (ML) structure to enhance the perpendicular anisotropy Ku. Then we succeeded in getting a new ML medium of Nd0.34Gd0.66/Fe0.9Co0.1 with a bilayer period of 1 nm. However, the substitution of 66% Gd resulted in undesirable decreases of Kerr rotation and coercivity. In this experiment, a part of Nd is replaced by either Tb or Dy instead of Gd with an expectation that the amount of replacement to get the perpendicular magnetization configuration may be smaller since Tb and Dy have large one ion anisotropy compared with Gd. The magnetic and MO properties of Nd(Tb,Dy)/FeCo MLs will be reported. In the case of Tb, for example, a square Kerr hysteresis loop is obtained by the substitution of about 40%. However, θK at 400 nm is about 0.30°, which is larger than that of Tb-FeCo but smaller than NdGd/FeCo MLs.

    Notizen: Rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) amorphous films have been used as magneto-optical recording media. One of the most important properties is the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the main origin of which is explained by one ion anisotropy of rare earth ion. However, it is also noted that the anisotropy contribution due to the magnetostriction depends in a very similar manner on the RE species as in the case of the main anisotropy. Thus it was suggested that the main origin of the magnetostriction might be the one ion anisotropy of RE. The present work reports the saturation magnetostriction constant λs of various RE-Co amorphous alloy films with RE=Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er in the range of RE concentration of 0%–40%. In most cases, λs increases with RE concentration, then decreases after showing a peak and disappears altogether with ferromagnetism. For an RE species with a small one ion anisotropy, λs is small with a value of less than 2×10−5, and is found to be contributed primarily from Co. For RE with larger one ion anisotropy, namely for RE=Sm, Pr, Tb, and Dy, λs has values of the order of 10−4 and is estimated to be contributed mainly from RE one ion anisotropy.

    Notizen: The influence of an addition of Al on the corrosion resistance of amorphous 100-nm-thick Tb-Fe coevaporated films has been studied. From measurements of the change of the optical transmittance, it is seen that the growth of pin holes is reduced considerably. However, the addition of Al also results in a decrease of the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of the Tb-Fe films such as the Curie temperature, the Kerr rotation, the perpendicular anisotropy, and the coercivity. These problems, however, are recovered easily by replacing part of the Fe by Co. This replacement also contributes to the improvement of the corrosion resistance. It has been shown that Tb-Fe-Co-Al films have a much better corrosion resistance than Tb-Fe or Tb-Fe-Co films, while having the same good magnetic and magneto-optic properties.

    Notizen: Thermal stability has been investigated for the structure and the perpendicular anisotropy Ku of Nd44Gd56/Fe89Co11 multilayer films with the bilayer period of 1 nm, where Ku becomes the maximum. From the results of isothermal annealing at temperature Ta, it has been found that the saturation magnetization Ms scarcely changes up to Ta=400 °C, while Ku is almost constant up to Ta=200 °C but decreases rather quickly for Ta above 200 °C. The decrease in Ku for Ta(approximately-greater-than)260 °C is accompanied by the decrease in the peak intensity of low angle x-ray diffraction, namely by the deterioration of the layered structure.

    Notizen: Combining X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (X-MCD) with a transmission X-ray microscope (TXM) allows to image element-specifically magnetic domain structures with 25 nm lateral resolution. Both in-plane and out-of-plane systems can be studied in applied magnetic fields. Thus field-dependent parameters, as individual nucleation fields in magnetic nanostructures can be deduced and related to morphology. Images of thermomagnetically written bits in magneto-optical TbFeCo media proof the reliability of the writing process and the importance of an exact thermal design of the systems. Domains observed at corresponding Co L edges proof the chemical sensitivity of M-TXM and its potential to image few monolayer systems.
