Notes: Abstract Calculation is presented of the influence of the normal velocity component on the directional characteristics of a three-segment electrochemical probe in the vicinity of a stagnation or a separation point. The results obtained here for a 2D flow corresponding to an axisymmetric flow having a stagnation point show quantitative differences, especially in the stagnation region, with respect to an earlier calculation performed on a 2D flow corresponding to a planar flow having a stagnation line. An experimental study with such a probe is then reported which demonstrates the possibility of this arrangement in the stagnation region of an immersed jet.

Notes: Abstract The reduction of dissolved oxygen has been studied over a wide conductivity range for use in steady or nonsteady hydrodynamic measurements. Mass transfer fluctuations can be analysed statistically to obtain the power spectra of hydrodynamic fluctuations. This requires a consideration of the proton reduction, which prevents diffusion from limiting the current. The transfer function for deducing the hydrodynamic spectra from mass transfer spectra includes not only transport effects but also kinetic effects which account for the finite rate of the reaction. The experimental study was performed using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) impedance.

Notes: Abstract Electrochemical measurement of mass transfer enhancement in a dilute suspension of particles, due to particle rotation in the presence of a shear flow, has been studied with a Couette cell. An effective diffusivityD e involving the Peclet numberPe of the particles and the molecular diffusivityD of the solute was obtained for low particle volume fraction ϕ asD e=D(1+3.5ϕPe 1/2). From steady-state and transient data, it was shown that aggregation may occur with alumina particles and that inertial effects due to centrifugation reveal a marginal layer free of particles near the rotating inner cylinder.

Notes: Abstract The calculation of the mass flux/velocity gradient transfer function at a wall in the direction parallel to the wall and perpendicular to the mean flow direction, has been performed in linear conditions. This transfer function is relevant to the difference of the mass fluxes between two semicircular surfaces separated by an infinitely thin gap aligned with the flow direction. Electrochemical measurements in turbulent flow were performed with segmented electrodes having this geometry and devised by a photolithographic technique. The spectra of the velocity gradient fluctuations in the longitudinal and transverse directions were calculated and hence the turbulence intensities.

Notes: Abstract Three-segment electrodiffusion probes embedded in a wall allow to determine simultaneously the three kinematic parameters of flow close to the probe surface: the flow directionθ, the wall shear rateq, and the normal velocity coefficientA,v z = −A z 2. A well-controlled three-dimensional flow, generated by a rotating disk, was used to demonstrate the capabilities of this new kind of electrodiffusion probes by comparing experimental results with the prediction based on the well-known hydrodynamical theory.

Notes: Summary A transition has been displayed in a concentrated solution of a linear chain polymer flowing close to a rotating disk. For a critical angular speed of rotation, a discontinuity of the mass transfer rate by diffusion and convection, as well as the existence of flow birefringence are observed. This transition is interpreted as an effect of conformational change (coiled to stretched shape) of the polymer under the local strain in the fluid.

Notes: Abstract Selenium and tellurium clusters are produced by the inert gas condensation technique. The mass spectra of both species are completely different and reveal different properties. In selenium, a periodicity of 6–7 is observed and may be interpreted by the binding energy between small cyclic molecules. Moreover, it was very difficult to obtained large clusters probably because the binding energy between these molecules is very small. In tellurium, these periodic structures do not exist and large clusters are easily obtained in nucleation conditions where only small selenium clusters are present. These results are discussed and a simple nucleation model is used to illustrate this different behavior. Finally these clusters properties are correlated to the bulk structure of both materials.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this paper is to study the properties of selenium clusters produced by vapor condensation technique. Simulation of nucleation process up to 50 atoms are in favour of a structure close to the amorphous structure. Doubly charged clusters are also obtained in the mass spectra.
