Notes: Summary A stimulatory effect on prolactin secretion had been describe after acute and systemic administration of met-enkephalin, but the effects of this opioid after chronic administration has not been reported, and the response of mammotroph cells is not clear. As a complement to previous studies, a morphometric analysis (light and electron microscopy) was carried out on prolactin cells from female rats treated chronically with met-enkephalin. Clear features of cellular hyperactivity appeared after chronic and systemic administration of the opioid, and these persisted for two weeks. The changes consisted in increases of cellular, cytoplasmic and nuclear areas, volume and surface densities of the Golgi complex and rough endoplasmic reticulum, as well as the numbers of exocytotic figures. These morphological alterations were paralleled by an increase in serum prolactin levels as detected by RIA. It is concluded that the increase in the synthesis and secretory activity of prolactin cells following chronic and systemic administration of met-enkephalin is very similar to those observed after acute and intraventricular administration.

Notes: Summary In order to elucidate the possible role of estrogens in the sex-dependent modulation of met-enkephalin-induced prolactin secretion, and the cellular response at adenohypophyseal level, analyses of serum prolactin levels together with a morphometric study of prolactin-immunoreactive cells were carried out following intraventricular administration of the opioid to estrogenprimed male rats. Administration of the opioid led to an increase in the serum levels of the hormone and, morphometrically, a significant increase in the cellular, cytoplasmic and nuclear areas was observed. When naloxone was administered previously, the above, mentioned changes did not appear, and the values found were similar to those observed in the animals treated only with estrogens. The results suggest that the met-enkephalin-induced prolactin secretion is modulated by the gonadal steroid environment.

Notes: Summary Degeneration of the central white matter is described in old dogs. The presence of ubiquitin-immunoreactive free granules and intracytoplasmic globules in glial cells and macrophages, together with galactocerebroside-immunoreactive precipitates and lipofuscin storage, point to the likelihood of a primary myelin degeneration with deposits of non-degraded ubiquitin-protein conjugates and complex galactolipids.

Notes: The main trophic interrelations were analysed in 12 species which represent 93% of the total catch from a beach seine fishery developed in Celestún, Yucatán. The diet was determined based on monthly samples over 4 yr. Five different trophic guilds were found on the basis of feeding preferences: microcrustacean and polychaete feeders, piscivores, omnivores and herbivores. For microcrustacean feeders Orthopristis chrysoptera, Eucinostomus gula, E. argenteus and Opisthonema oglinum the diet is narrow with a large overlap between. For polychaete feeders, Arius felis, A. melanopus and Haemulon plumieri diet is broad with the higher overlap between the catfishes. Among piscivores, Bardiella chrysura and Harengula jaguana have a high overlap between them, but a lower one with other species from the community. Among omnivores Lagodon rhomboides has the broadest diet and is considered to be a generalist while Acanthostraceon quadricornis is a specialist having a very narrow diet and a lower value of overlap with the other species. Finally, Archosargus rhomboidalis is a herbivore with the narrowest niche breadth and lowest overlap. In addition to a description of diets and trophic inter-relations, the results emphasize the importance to the beach seine fishery of the benthic food resources.

Notes: Rapidly quenched crystalline Fe95M5 alloys were studied by spin-echo NMR experiments for frequencies ranging from 10 to 300 MHz at 4.2 K. While x-ray diffraction for all these samples show the same bcc Fe pattern, NMR measurements reveal the details of their local structural character. The C atoms form an interstitial bcc solid solution with Fe as well as Fe3C-like short-range order (SRO). Similarly, an orthorhombic Fe3B-like SRO exists in the B-containing alloy. The Si- and P-containing alloys are substitutional bcc solid solutions in which the Si and P atoms replace Fe randomly. A SRO is also found in Fe95Al5 the Al atoms avoid being close to each other. The results demonstrate that atomic size plays a key role in forming the various kinds of atomic configurations in these alloys.

Notes: SrTiO3 thin films have been deposited on Si(100) by pulsed laser ablation. The films were characterized by x-ray diffractometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectrometry. The films show the (h00) or (hh0) preferential orientations depending on the substrate temperature and oxygen partial pressure during the deposition. Depth profiles indicate that films grow without an important reaction with the substrate. Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films were successfully deposited by laser ablation on Si(100) substrates coated with SrTiO3 buffer layer. This indicates that SrTiO3 is a good material as a buffer layer for deposition of YBa2Cu3O7−x on silicon.

Notes: Abstract. Multispecies stock assessment based upon Schaefer's theory was applied to a coastal pelagic fishery (Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus maculatus (Mitchill); king mackerel, S. cavalla (Cuvier) and the blue runner, Caranx fusus (Geoffroy-St Hilaire)), from the west central Gulf of Mexico. Linear and non-linear systems of equations were estimated by using a multiple stepwise regression technique. The values of interaction parameters show a clear competition between mackerels, and technological interdependences between the blue runner and mackerels, The maximum yield estimation was from 4000 to 5000 tonnes, obtained with 23 and 34 beach seines respectively, depending on the applied model. Two stages were observed from the statistical records; in the first the Spanish mackerel is the most important species while in the second the abundance of this species declines and the others remain at the same level. Significant interactions were found from the first data group.

Notes: To evaluate the safe use of aztreonam (AZT) in patients allergic to penicillins and other betalactam antibiotics we studied 29 patients from a group of subjects allergic to betalactams, diagnosed by presenting systemic reactions after skin tests or challenge tests. Skin tests with benzylpenicilloyl (BPO), benzylpenicilloate, benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephamandole and AZT, radioallergosorbent test (RAST) to BPO and AZT, RAST inhibition and challenge tests were performed. One patient was skin test-positive to AZT, another patient was RAST AZT-positive. IgE antibodies were specific to AZT as demonstrated by RAST inhibition studies with AZT coupled to epsilon-amino caproic acid. Nevertheless, AZT was unable to inhibit either a pool of sera or individual sera positive to BPO. Although all our 29 patients tolerated the administration of AZT (including those with skin test or RAST positive) and AZT appears to be safe in these subjects, this does not indicate that all betalactam-allergic patients tolerate AZT administration
