Notes: The thesis of this paper is that many proposed moderators in personnel psychology are probably illusory, having been created solely by belief in the law of small numbers. Evidence is presented that race as a moderator of test validity is one such illusory moderator. In addition, a model for validity generalization is described which, in addition to eliminating the need for criterion-related validity studies under certain circumstances, strongly calls into question the idea that situations moderate test validity, i.e., the traditional doctrine of situational specificity of test validities. Calculations are presented which show that adequate statistical power in moderator research requires much larger sample sizes than have typically been employed. This requirement is illustrated empirically using validity data for the Army Classification Battery for 35 jobs and 21,000 individuals. These analyses show that (1) even when a moderator is generally assumed to be large, large samples are required to gauge its effect reliably and (2) large sample research may show that moderators that appear plausible and important a priori are nonexistent or trivial in magnitude. The practice of pooling across numerous small sample studies to obtain statistical power equivalent to that of large sample studies is recommended. In light of the evidence that many proposed moderators may not exist, the authors hypothesize that the true structure of underlying relationships in personnel psychology is considerably simpler than personnel psychologists have generally imagined it to be.

Notes: This study examined the construct validity of personality scales, a personality-based integrity test, and homogenous biodata scales as reflected in their ability to discriminate white collar criminals from other white collar employees. The sample included 365 prison inmates incarcerated in 23 federal correctional institutions for white collar offenses, and 344 individuals employed in upper-level positions of authority. A cross-validated linear discriminant function (DF) based on 16 variables selected in the developmental sample produced a large difference (1.83 standard deviation units) between the two sample groups. The pattern of score differences revealed the offenders as having greater tendencies toward irresponsibility, lack of dependability, and disregard of rules and social norms. This study indicates that there are large and measurable psychological differences between white collar offenders and nonoffenders, and that the major construct underlying these differences is “social conscientiousness.” The best measure of this difference was a personality-based integrity test.

Notes: The adverse impact of a content-valid job sample test of metal trades skills was compared to that of a well-constructed content-valid written achievement test for the same technical area. The adverse impact of the former was considerably less. In addition, both minority and majority examinees saw the job sample tests as significantly fairer, clearer, and more appropriate in difficulty level. These differences were not only statistically significant but also quite large. These were no significant differences between minority and majority attitudes toward either test. In light of these results, it is suggested that industrial psychologists should explore more fully the potential of performance testing.

Notes: Using an improved version of the Bayesian validity generalization model presented in Schmidt and Hunter (1977), this study showed that most of the between-study variation in observed validity coefficients of various aptitude and ability tests for two types of clerical work and for the job of first-line supervisor is artifactual in nature. These results cast additional doubt on the traditional belief that employment test validities are situationally specific. In addition, the results showed that generalization of validities to new settings was justified even where the hypothesis of situational specificity could not be rejected under the standards used in this study. Implications for the use of aptitude and ability tests in selection and for theory development in industrial-organizational psychology are discussed.

Notes: Summary We consider two card shuffling schemes. The first, which has appeared in the literature previously ([G], [RB], [T]), is as follows: start with a deck ofn cards, and pick a random tuplet ∈ { 1, 2, ⋯, n} n ; interchange cards 1 andt 1, then interchange cards 2 andt 2, etc. The second scheme, which can be viewed as a transformation on the symmetric groupS n , is given by the restriction of the former shuffling scheme to tuplest which form a permutation of {1, 2,⋯,n}. We determine the bias of each of these shuffling schemes with respect to the sets of transpositions and derangements, and the expected number of fixed points of a permutation generated by each of these shuffling schemes. For the latter scheme we prove combinatorially that the permutation which arises with the highest probability is the identity. The same question is open for the former scheme. We refute a candidate answer suggested by numerical evidence [RB].

Notes: Abstract (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-nonadecatriene (Z3,Z6,Z9–19Hy) and (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-nonadecadiene (Z3,Z9-cis-6,7-epo-19Hy) were identified in pheromone gland extracts from femaleErannis defoliaria. The two components were found in a 1∶3 ratio, with the main component,Z3,Z9-cis-6,7-epo-19Hy present at an amount of about 1.5 ng per female. The components were identified by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-electroantennography and gas chromatography-single sensillum recordings. Single sensillum measurements on the male antenna showed two physiological types of sensilla. One type was characterized by a large spike amplitude cell responding toZ3,Z9-cis-6,7-epoxy-19Hy and a small spike amplitude cell responding toZ3,Z6,Z9–19Hy. A second type responded only with a large spike amplitude cell to the epoxide, and this cell was inhibited by the triene. Of the two pheromone components, the epoxide gave the higher response in the EAG tests. Preliminary field tests support the identification of the pheromone components. The epoxide was also found to be present in the extract of the pheromone gland ofColotois pennaria, and males ofC. pennaria andAgriopis marginaria were trapped by the mixture of the identified compounds.

Description: The paper presents a construction scheme of deriving transparent , i. e. reflection-free, boundary conditions for the numerical solution of Fresnel's equation (being formally equivalent to Schrödinger's equation). These boundary conditions appear to be of a nonlocal Cauchy type. As it turns out, each kind of linear implicit discretization induces its own discrete transparent boundary conditions.

Description: An adaptive approach to the numerical solution of the wave propagation in integrated optics devices with 1D cross sections is described. First, Fresnel's approximation of the exact wave equation resulting from Maxwell's equations is considered. A criterion to estimate the validity of this approximation is derived. Fresnel's wave equation being formally equivalent to Schroedinger's equation uniquely defines an initial-boundary-value problem, which is solved numerically by a stepwise calculation of the propagating field. Discretization in longitudinal direction first with stepsize control leads to a stationary subproblem for the transversal field distribution, which is then handled by an adaptive finite element method. Thus full adaptivity of the algorithm is realized. The numerical examples are concentrated on taper structures playing an essential role in integrated optics devices for telecommunication systems.
