    Notes: Abstract Catalytic activity and immunoreactivity of glycogen phosphorylase were studied in pre- and postnatal rat brain. The catalytic activity was assayed in brain homogenates; immunoreactivity was investigated by immunoblot analysis using a monoclonal anti-bovine brain glycogen phosphorylase antibody. The cellular localization and intensity of immunoreactivity were analysed on paraffin-embedded sections utilizing the same monoclonal antibody. The catalytic activity increased 10-fold from embryonic day 16 to adult; immunoreactivity became detectable on embryonic day 16 and increased in intensity as the enzyme activity rose to adult values. The first cellular elements to be stained immunohistochemically were ependymal cells lining the ventricles, ependymal cells of the choroid plexus, meningeal cells and a selected population of neurons in the brain stem. The immunoreactivity of plexus cells and meningeal cells was reduced or absent in the adult rat brain. The earliest appearance of glycogen phosphorylase immunoreactivity in astroglial cells was seen at postnatal day 9 in the hippocampus. The staining pattern of the adult brain was reached at day 22 post partum. The developmental changes in glycogen deposition and in glycogen phophorylase activity and immunoreactivity may indicate a variable physiological role of glycogen metabolism for different cell types in the pre- and postnatal periods.

    Notes: Summary Paraffin-embedded sections from paraformaldehyde-fixed rat brain were stained immunocytochemically for glycogen phosphorylase brain isozyme BB, using a monoclonal mouse antibody and the biotin-streptavidin method, with either horseradish peroxidase or β-galactosidase as marker enzymes. Two cell types showed strong glycogen phosphorylase-immunoreactivity: Astrocytes and ependymal cells. Most intensive staining was observed in the cerebellar cortex, the neocortex and the hippocampus. Astrocytes in the cerebellar white matter stained positively. The choroid plexus cells stained poorly or not at all. Neurons throughout the brain were negative, as well as oligodendrocytes and bundles of myelinated nerve fibers. These data are consistent with the immunocytochemical localization of glycogen phosphorylase in astroglia-rich primary cultures derived from rat brain.

    Notes: Summary Immunofluorescence double-labelling and immunoenzyme double-staining methods were used to examine the location of glycogen phosphorylase brain isozyme with the astrocyte markers glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S-100 protein in formaldehydefixed, paraffin-embedded slices from adult rat brain. Astrocytes in the cerebellum and the hippocampus, which express GFAP or S-100 protein immunoreactivity, show glycogen phosphorylase immunoreactivity. Regional intensity and intracellular distribution of the three antigens vary characteristically. In ependymal cells, glycogen phosphorylase immunoreactivity is co-localized with S-100 protein immunoreactivity, but not with GFAP immunoreactivity. These findings confirm that glycogen phosphorylase in the rat brain is exclusively localized in astrocytes and ependymal cells. All astrocytes, as far as they express GFAP or S-100 protein, do contain glycogen phosphorylase.

    Notes: Abstract Beta-decay half-lives (T1/2) and delayed-neutron emission probabilities (Pn) of very neutron-rich Cu to As nuclei have been measured, among them the new isotopes77Cu48,79Cu50,81Zn51 and84Ga53. With the T1/2 and Pn-values of now four N ∼-50 ”waiting-point” nuclei known, our hypothesis that the r-process has attained a local β-flow equilibrium araound A∼-80 is further strengthened.

    Notes: Abstract A band with a rotational pattern based on a state at 585.1 keV has been identified in theN=59 neutron-rich nucleus97Sr. Its properties lead to the [422] 3/2 Nilsson-orbital assignment for the band head. There is evidence for a second band with the head at 644.7 keV and the configuration [541] 3/2. Since the ground state and the lowest excited levels are spherical, shape coexistence is established for97Sr. A deformed nature of several levels at 500–600 keV results also from QRPA-model calculations. The structure of the low-lying spherical levels has been studied in the frame of the IBF model. The results of the present investigations lead to a better understanding of theN=59 isotones which constitute the link between the spherical and deformed nuclei atA∼100 as a species with shape coexistence but without any indications of particular softness.

    Notes: Abstract From the halflife oft 1/2=3.91 (16) ns for the 21 + state in100Sr a deformation parameter ofβ=0.40(1) has been derived. Within the given uncertainties, this value is equal to the recently determinedβ-parameters for98Sr and99Sr, indicating that in the Sr isotopes saturation of deformation is reached immediately at its onset well before neutron midshell. This behaviour is reflected by the “twin” character of98Sr and100Sr with identical features of their unperturbed ground-state rotational bands. These observations are discussed in terms of strong two-nucleon interactions.

    Notes: Abstract Theβ-decay energy of the neutron-rich isotopes148Ba,148La and151Pr has been measured at the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL). The148Ba- and148La-nuclei were produced using a high-temperature ion source at the OSTIS separator of this institute, whereas samples of151Pr were obtained from the thermal fission of239Pu, used as a target in the mass separator LOHENGRIN. At both instruments,βγ-coincidences were measured with a plastic scintillator telescope and a Ge(I)-detector, together withβ-singles andγ-singles spectra. Theβ-spectra emitted in coincidence with 44γ-lines in the decay of these nuclei have been evaluated. From their endpoint energies, the followingQ β -values have been obtained:Q β (148Ba)=5115±60keV;Q β (148La)=7255±55 keV;Q β (151Pr)=4170±75 keV. Using these results, the nuclear massesA of these nuclei can be calculated with a relative error ΔA/A≃5·10−7. In addition, the two-neutron separation energies and the mass excesses have been derived; the results are compared with recent predictions of theoretical mass calculations.

    Notes: Abstract Autophoretic coating (AC) is a complex chemical process consisting of various electrochemical partial reactions such as metal corrosion, hydrogen evolution and peroxide and oxygen reduction. While the redox potential of the bath is very positive, about 0.6V, the coating process takes place at about −0.2 V dependent on the bath composition. The low conductivity of the bath is necessary to maintain the dispersion, but it hinders the kinetic investigations. Nevertheless potentiodynamic polarization curves show that the diffusion limited peroxide reduction and the corrosion of iron are the most important reactions. From the corrosion current density a maximum weight loss of 0.1 mg cm−2 is estimated for a standard film of 20 μm thickness. Hydrogen evolution is almost negligible during the first period of dipping. This conclusion can be justified by measurements in the hydrogen permeation cell. The partial current densities are not influenced by various emulgators, but the dispersion catalyses the hydrogen evolution and inhibits the anodic corrosion. The diffusion of peroxide is hindered. Potentiostatic measurements in various solutions show the role of ferrous ions deriving from corrosion in the case of iron or by reduction of ferric ions in the case of gold. Measurements at a disc electrode show that the cathodic reactions are dominated by diffusion and migration.
