Notes: Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) are the most numerous cell population among the cellular infiltrates in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and play important roles in the host-defensive system in the gingival crevices. We determined the percentage of neutrophils, cosinophils and basophils in total PMNLs by light microscopic observation using Randolph-methylene blue staining, then assessed flow cytometric differences in the expression of CR3, FcγRIII, FcɛRII. LFA-1α, and LFA-Iβ on PMNL in GCF and peripheral blood (PB) from 21 patients with adult periodontius (AP) and 13 healthy donors. Percentages of basophils and eosinophils were higher in GCF than in PB. In both AP patients and healthy subjects, expression of CR3 and FcɛRll was higher while FeγRIII was lower in GCF than in PB. The statistical analysis showed that the expressions of FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs were lower in AP patients than in healthy subjects. Expressions of LFA-1α and β on GCF were similar to those on PB PMNLs. PB PMNLs stimulated in vitro with Porphyromonas gingivalts culture supernatant and fMLP displayed an expression pattern of CR3, FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs. However, C5a and IL-I failed to induce changes in FcγRIII and FcɛRII. The results indicate that GCF neutrophils are activated, present enhanced adhesion and a decreased IgG-binding ability which would reflect that they are at the terminal stage of activation, and that GCF contains a larger eosinophil fraction than in PB. Moreover, these GCF eosinophils appear to be activated.

Notes: Abstract Non-exponentialities of the decay curve of a.c. thin-film electroluminescence devices are explained by applying the Yokota Tanimoto (Y-T) equation. In applying the equation it is assumed that the distributions of donors and acceptors are non-uniform; the concentrations increase from the bottom to the top of an active layer. Electron-spin resonance (ESR) measurements of the active layers indicate that the concentrations of isolated Mn2+ ions, Mn2+ pairs and Mn2+ triples in the layer agree approximately with those of donors and acceptors used in the Y-T equation to obtain a good fit to the measured decay curves, where the Mn2+ triples are assumed to work as the acceptors (i.e. quenchers), and the isolated Mn2+ ions and the Mn2+ pairs as the donors (i.e. luminescent centres).

Notes: Summary CT studies of 50 patients with spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and 100 randomly selected patients were reviewed with regard to the size of the frontal and temporal horns of the lateral ventricles. The temporal horn was classified into four grades, based on the size of its posterior portion at the level of the midbrain. The horn was clearly visible in 66% of patients with SAH, but in only 2% of controls. In the SAH group, the temporal horn tended to dilate sooner than the frontal horn after haemorrhage and could be seen clearly in a larger proportion of patients. Thus, assessment of the size of the temporal horn appears to be a simple and sensitive method for assessing ventricular dilatation. In addition, dilatation of the temporal horn may prove to be an important indirect sign suggesting SAH in patients in whom no high density clot is seen on CT.

Notes: Abstract Plastic deformation of isotropic graphite in the vicinity of 2500 °C was studied using an Instron-type testing machine. The load-deflection curve was found to show a proportional limit at high temperature. Creep curves of graphite were also measured and were simulated by an empirical equation based on parabolic creep. Following the creep tests, ultrasonic velocity in the elongated graphite was measured. The velocity showed 5%–20% decrease after the creep. Below 2500 °C, the rate of velocity decrease along the elongation axis was always larger than that across the elongation axis. Above 2500 °C, this behaviour was reversed with the rate of velocity decrease across the elongation axis being the larger. The rate of decrease appeared to depend firstly on temperature and secondly on stress.

Notes: Abstract Ejectile nuclei in the fragmentation of intermediate-energy heavy-ion projectiles were found to be largely spin polarized. The observed polarization as a function of the outgoing momentum was nicely explained by a simple kinematical argument based on the participant-spectator model of projectile fragmentation. The measurements extended to cover several different targets, incident energies, exit channels, and emission angles revealed that substantial polarization shows up widely in projectile fragmentation reactions. Furthermore, this polarization exhibits an interesting behavior which may be interpreted as a manifestation of a gradual change in the deflection angle from positive to negative values as the energy increases and/or the target-Z decreases. The present polarization results also suggests various applications of spin polarized radioactive beams. As the first example of such an application, we present a recent result on theg-factor measurements on neutron-rich nuclei.

Notes: Abstract A method to produce beams of polarized unstable nuclei was developed, which fully exploits the advantageous features of the projectile fragmentation reaction. The method was applied tog-factor measurements of several neutron-rich nuclei. We present experimental results so far obtained and discuss capabilities and limitations the present polarization method has.

Notes: Abstract Circular polarization measurements on the λ=468.6 nm light emitted in the4He IIn=3-n=4 transition show that the excited states of ions emerging from anuntilted carbon foil in an external magnetic field are polarized. The polarization is parallel to the external field, increases with the strength of the field until a maximum is reached at ∼ 40 mT, and then decreases.

Notes: Abstract We discuss a new method of producing spin-polarized radioactive nuclear probes which capitalizes characteristic features of projectile fragmentation reaction at intermediate energies. Experimental results are given for the behavior of polarization as a function of the fragment momentum, target mass number, and beam energy. As an application of this method, we also report on results ofg-factor measurements for several neutron-rich nuclei. A full account of theg-factor measurement will be presented elsewhere.

Notes: Summary Chromatographic behaviour of the rare earth elements on C-18 bonded silica reversed-phase material has been investigated in aqueous lactate media. The lactatocomplexes of the rare earths are distributed and fractionated on the bonded silica column by a mobile phase gradient technique in the presence of hydrophobic ions. The effects of the lactate concentration pH, methanol and hydrophobic ion concentrations in the eluents have been investigated in detail to have the best resulution of the adjacent rare earth elements. Port-column reaction with arsenazo(III) is used to detect the separated rare earth lactatocomplexes. This reversed-phase partition system is suited to separate and detect all rare earth elements within 40 min with good reproducibility.

Notes: Summary Separation and determination of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium in monazites have been achieved by dynamic ion-exchange chromatography. The ore samples are decomposed by sulfuric acid and the rare earths are separated in a group as oxalates. The rare earth elements are then separated from each other on a column of bonded phase silica by gradient elution with 0.05 to 0.5 M lactic acid (pH 3.5) in the presence of 0.01 M sodium 1-octanesulfonate. Post-column reaction with Arsenazo III is used for detection and quantification of the individual rare earth elements. Results are quoted for lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium in monazites. Detection limit is 1 μg ml−1 with a S/N ratio of 3. The separation is complete within 27 min valley to valley resolution. Precision of better than 1% can usually be obtained.
