Notes: Dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV (DAP IV) staining was examined in various histological types of lung carcinomas to evaluate this enzyme activity. A total of 45 lung carcinomas were examined for their enzyme activity. Almost all (93.1%) cases of adenocarcinoma were positive for DAP IV activity, whereas all cases of squamous cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, large cell carcinoma and carcinoid were negative. DAP IV activity of microsomes in lung carcinomas was significantly higher in papillary adenocarcinomas than in squamous cell carcinomas. These data suggest that DAP IV may be a good marker to distinguish adenocarcinoma from other histological types of lung carcinoma.

Notes: Summary Two cases of pseudohypoparathyroidism were examined with a superconductive 1.5 T MR imaging system. High signal intensities were seen in both putamina, pulvinars and dentate nuclei on T1-weighted images.

Notes: Abstract We studied the MRI appearances of the brain in 159 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and 2566 agematched individuals without DM (controls). The images were reviewed for cerebral infarcts, hemorrhage, atrophy and subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy. Cerebral atrophy was significantly more frequent in patients with DM than in controls (P〉0.005) from the sixth to the eighth decade. The frequency of atrophy was 41.2% in the 6th decade, 60.0% in the 7th and 92.3% in the 8th decade in DM, and 19.8%, 38.9% and 56.8% respectively in controls. Unexpectedly, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidences of cerebrovascular diseases at any age.

Notes: Summary Two patients with intervertebral disc herniation appeared to demonstrate abnormally diffuse and intense enhancement of the disc after intravenous administration of gadolinium-DTPA for MRI. Surgery disclosed a dilated epidural venous plexus in one and vascular granulation tissue in the other, associated with the herniated disc material. The mechanism of this “pseudoenhancement” of the disc appears to be a partial volume effect of disc material and the adjacent veins or granulation tissue. Pseudoenhancement of a herniated disc should be included in the differential diagnosis of a diffusely enhancing epidural mass.

Notes: Summary Cerebral vasodilatory capacity was evaluated by acetazolamide-activated N-isopropyl-p-[12 3I]iodoamphetamine (123I-IMP) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in 42 patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). A low perfusion area was present in the corresponding region of haematoma seen on the CT and continued to be noted throughout the time courses. Deteriorated acetazolamide reactivity affected by surgical intervention was seen in 100% of the patients who underwent aneurysm repair in the 1st postoperative week, 92% in the second week, 73% in the third week, and 47% in the fourth week. Three patients with acute diffuse brain swelling seen on CT showed intracranial non-filling of123I-IMP on SPECTs performed on Day 6, and all three died by Day 10. Some low perfusion areas, due to probable vasospasm, were present in 77% of Hunt and Hess grades I and II patients and in 100% of grades III, IV, and V patients throughout their time courses. Overall, low perfusion areas, due to probable vasospasm, were seen in 10 patients (31%) of 32 who underwent SPECT between Day 4 and 8, 23 (77%) of 30 between Day 9 and 14, 21 (72%) of 29 between Day 15 and 21, and 11 (48%) of 23 between Day 22 and 28. The results suggest acetazolamide-activated123I-IMP study is of value in evaluating changes in vasodilatory capacity in SAH patients in the acute and subacute stages.

Notes: Abstract The effects of tin additions on the ordering process of PdCu ordered alloys were investigated by electric resistivity measurements, optical microscopic observations, hardness tests, X-ray diffraction, and electron probe micro-analysis. The ordering process was found to be acccelerated by addition of tin, 1.0% addition being the most effective. This acceleration of ordering by the addition of tin may be explained by assuming that the formation of ordered nuclei becomes easier. The β-phase is stable up to 900 °C with 1.5% Sn addition.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism destroying the adhesion between PMMA and mild steel, and the action of water molecules reaching the adhesion interface was investigated. Mild steel and a thin PMMA film were bonded with dental adhesive (4-META resin). After immersion in water, the adhesive layer was peeled from the metal surface. The surface was analysed by ESCA, reflection electron diffraction, and X-ray diffraction to elucidate changes in surface structure. After 2 weeks immersion, there was a very thin brown product and after 2 months a thick black corrosion product composed of Fe3O4 formed at the adhesion interface. The thin brown layer showed no X-ray diffraction pattern but reflection electron diffraction showed it to be FeO(OH). After 3 days immersion, the mild steel surface appeared unchanged through the clear resin layer, and ESCA analysis showed the same chemical state as the surface of the specimen immersed for 2 weeks. Destruction of adhesion between metal and adhesive is caused by destruction of the chemical bond by the water molecules permeating through the resin layer. It is followed by corrosion of mild steel which produced iron oxide hydrate.

Notes: Abstract Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film bonded by 4-META dental adhesive resin to mild steel was used as a specimen to study the mechanism of water permeation into the adhesive interface. Degradation of the adhesion interface after immersion in water was investigated by measurement of peeling area after imposing thermal stress using liquid nitrogen. The amount of water penetrated at the interface was calculated from the solution to Fick's second equation. The degradation at the interface is discussed with respect to the water content. Water enters the interface by diffusion through the resin rather than by passage along the interface. The interface is broken by water when the water content at the interface reaches 48% of the equilibrium water concentration of PMMA. Observation through the PMMA film shows no change in the mild steel surface at 48% equilibrium water concentration; at 95% water content many small white spots appear on the surface. The surface colour gradually changes to black due to the formation of corrosion products.
