Notes: We model time-resolved photoluminescence in GaAs using an ensemble Monte Carlo method coupled with a k⋅p calculation of the band structure. We show that on a picosecond scale, carrier diffusion perpendicular to the layer significantly reduces the density at the surface and consequently has a first-order effect on luminescence measurements. To illustrate this we compare the calculated luminescence, with and without diffusion, to experimental data.

Notes: The relationships between increasing nitrogen fertilization and growth, maximum CO2 assimilation and the initial slope of the CO2 response curve were studied in 2 ecotypes of wild strawberry, Fragaria chiloensis (L.) Duchn. Nitrogen accumulation of CA11, an ecotype from a low-nutrient dune site, was greater at all nitrogen concentrations than that of RCP37, an ecotype from a higher-nutrient strand site. Maximum CO2 assimilation, total Rubisco activity, dry weight, and initiation of leaves and crowns were higher in CAI1 than RCP37 as nitrogen treatment was increased from 0 to 200 mg l-1, whereas these parameters were lower in CAl1 when fertilized at 300 mg T1, but not in RCP37. The mean leaf area of CA11 was greater than RCP37 when grown with no supplemental nitrogen, but mean leaf area of the 2 lines was similar under nitrogen fertilization. Maximum CO2 assimilation and carboxylation efficiency increased with increasing leaf nitrogen in both clones. At equivalent concentrations of leaf nitrogen, RCP37 had higher CO2 assimilation and carboxylation efficiency than CA11 and the difference between the 2 clones increased as ieaf nitrogen increased. Thus, RCP37 had a higher photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency than CA11. However, at a given applied nitrogen level, CA11 allocated more nitrogen to a unit of leaf area so that photosynthetic rates were higher than RCP37, except at the highest application of 300 mg l-1. The high nitrogen accumulation capacity and resource allocation to fruiting structures (crowns) in CA11 leads us to suggest that this clone may possess genes that could increase fruit yield in cultivated strawberry.

Notes: Summary Children 7 to 12 years of age were asked to indicate events they had experienced in the previous three months in a questionnaire devised for the study. Most children were able to complete the questionnaire and reported positive and negative events, the most common themes being personal achievement, illness-related events and problems in relationships. The agreement between parents and child reporting of individual events was uneven and children reported more events than parents. Psychiatrically disturbed children noted an excess of negative and loss events and children attending paediatric clinics reported fewer events, particularly fewer positive happenings, than non-attending primary school children. A child Life Events questionnaire may be of use to explore disturbed and ill children's perception of their lives.

Notes: Abstract Limestones have been worked for many thousands of years — initially for building stone and agricultural lime and more recently for a wide range of construction and industrial uses. In most industrialized countries limestone quarries represent the most visually obvious and, in both process and landform terms, the most dramatic anthropogenic impact on karst terrain. However, quarrying has, to date, received surprisingly little attention from karst scientists. Research in the English Peak District suggested that the postexcavation evolution of quarried limestone rock faces was in part a result of the methods used in their excavation, and this led to the development of a technique designed to reduce the visual and environmental impacts of modern quarries by “Landform replication. ” This involves the use of controlled “restoration blasting” techniques on quarried rock slopes to construct a landform sequence similar to that in the surrounding natural landscape. The constructed landforms are then partially revegetated using appropriate wildflower, grass, and/or tree species.

Notes: Summary Normative values for total body bone mineral content (TBBM) and total body bone mineral density (TBMD) were derived from measurements on 234 children 8–16 years of age. In addition, bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) values for selected regions of interest and soft tissue (bone free lean and fat) for the total body are presented. Bone mineral and soft tissue values were determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) using a Hologic QDR-2000 in the array mode. Results of a stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between bone-free lean tissue (BFLT) and BMD (r2 = 0.80) in girls. Adding age to the equation accounted for an additional 2% of the variance (P 〈 0.05) and height accounted for another 1% of the variance (P 〈 0.05). Body weight and fat tissue (FT) did not account for any additional variance. In boys BFLT correlated significantly with BMD (r2 = 0.75;P 〈 0.05); none of the other predictor variables accounted for additional variance. No significant differences were found in TBBM or TBMD between boys and girls at any age. There was a significant overall gender effect for only three regions of interest. Boys had greater BMC in the head region and had greater BMD in the upper limbs, but post hoc analysis revealed no significant differences for any specific age groups. Girls had greater overall BMD in the pelvis, but this difference was only significant at the 15–6-year age group. The changes in BFLT and FT over the age ranges were consistent with the growth literature. The normative values can be applied to the assessment of children and adolescents with health problems that may impact on the skeleton as well as to research studies investigating bone mineral development in children.

Notes: Summary The effect of drinking grapefruit juice on the acute pharmacokinetic and haemodynamic actions of the dihydropyridine calcium antagonist felodipine given as a 5 mg plain tablet has been studied in nine, healthy, middle-aged males. Compared to water, grapefruit juice caused an increase in Cmax from mean 6 to 16 nmol · l−1, and in the AUC from 23 to 65 nmol · h · l−1. The change in AUC corresponded to an increase in the systemic availability of felodipine from 15 to 45%, assuming no change in its clearance. This change was probably caused by inhibition of the oxidation of felodipine to the inactive dehydrofelodipine by flavonoids in grapefruit juice. The interaction with grapefruit juice is believed to be a class effect for the dihydropyridines, as oxidation of the dihydropyridine ring to the corresponding pyridine derivative is a major metabolic route for all these drugs. The higher plasma concentrations of felodipine taken with grapefruit juice resulted in a greater change in blood pressure measured in the morning 3 h after dosing (−9%) than did water (0%).
