Notes: The growth of a timothy sward, a timothy/white clover mixture and a multi-grass/white clover mixture were compared and related to climatic factors at two sites of different altitudes.Temperature and radiation had a greater effect on sward growth than did species composition or management. If the reproductive and vegetative growth periods were studied separately, then more than 90% of the variation in yield could be explained by temperature and radiation. During spring reproductive growth, yields per unit increment of temperature or radiation were 2–3 times higher than during summer vegetative growth. Spring growth was affected more by temperature than by radiation and the lower yields at the higher altitude were also related to lower temperatures.

Notes: Abstract In the parallel implementation of solution methods for parabolic problems one has to find a proper balance between the parallel efficiency of a fully explicit scheme and the need for stability and accuracy which requires some degree of implicitness. As a compromise a domain splitting scheme is proposed which is locally implicit on slightly overlapping subdomains but propagates the corresponding boundary data by a simple explicit process. The analysis of this algorithm shows that it has satisfactory stability and approximation properties and can be effectively parallelized. These theoretical results are confirmed by numerical tests on a transputer system.

Notes: Summary Most of the existing convergence theory of mixed finite element methods for solving the plate bending problem converns the model case of a purely clamped or simply supported plate with sufficiently regular boundary. The extension of this analysis to more complicated situations encounters two major difficulties: first, the problem of verifying the stability of the schemes in the case of a partially free boundary and, second, the reduction of the solution's regularity in the presence of reentrant corners or changes in the type of the boundary conditions. In this paper these questions are studied for the approximation of the Kirchhoff plate model by one of the mixed finite element schemes due to L. R. Herrmann, the so-called “first Herrmann scheme”. It is shown that this method converges on any polygonal domain and for all usual boundary conditions. The proof is based on the fact that this particular mixed scheme is algebraically equivalent to a nonconforming displacement method.

Notes: Abstract Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus is a major health problem worldwide. The only established therapy is interferon-α, with an efficacy of only 30–40% in highly selected patients. Nucleoside analogues do not show a significant clinical benefit. Molecular therapeutic strategies aimed at blocking gene expression include antisense DNA/RNA and ribozymes acting at the posttranscriptional level and triple helix formation blocking at the transcriptional level. In vitro, antisense oligodeoxynucleotides inhibit viral replication and gene expression in human hepatoma cell lines. In vivo, an antisense oligodeoxynucleotide directed against the 5′-region of the pre-S gene of the duck hepatitis B virus inhibited viral replication and gene expression in ducks. In vitro, ribozymes accurately cleave HBV substrate RNA. Triple helix formation is another very promising molecular approach. Results in hepadnaviral infection are not yet available, however.

Notes: Abstract By two exemplary clinical situations — acute viral hepatitis, acute-phase reaction of the liver — the significance of basic research for the understanding of clinical phenomena and for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures is demonstrated. The very different phenomena following infection with the hepatitis-B-virus can be explained by the variation in the interactions of virus and liver cell, by the immune reaction of the host, and by mutants of the virus. The reaction of the liver to an extrahepatic infection is mediated by interleukin-6, and characterized by an alteration in protein metabolism. The synthesis of acute-phase proteins is increased. The proteins confine the local injury and establish the homeostasis of the organism.
