Notes: A magneto-optical head with circular polarized light incident on a Co/Pt superlattice medium is studied. Differential absorption due to magnetic-circular-dichroism (MCD) is used for erasable data detection. This MCD detection system utilizes an optical isolator to minimize the feedback to the laser. The tradeoff for its reduced complexity is the loss of the common mode noise reduction capability. A disk is tested dynamically with the MCD detection system. With a linear medium velocity of 7.56 m/s and a frequency of 5 MHz a carrier-to-noise ratio of 40 dB is demonstrated.

Notes: The structure and magnetic properties of FeRuGaSi thin films used in very-high-frequency (150 MHz) recording head has been studied. The best soft magnetic properties, viz., coercivity of 0.2–0.3 Oe, permeability of 2000 at 1 MHz and 400–500 at 150 MHz, and magnetostriction of less than 10−6, were obtained after annealing at 450–500 °C. This magnetic behavior was attributed to the phase transformations and the increase in the grain size of the films occurring during the annealing process. Transmission electron diffraction revealed that B2 and/or DO3 ordered phases were formed in the films depending on the annealing temperature. However, good soft magnetic properties were associated with the formation of the B2 phase with low crystal anisotropy and saturation magnetostriction. These results are somewhat in contrast to what has been observed in Sendust, where magnetic softness is usually attributed to the formation of the DO3 phase.

Notes: Abstract 650 couples with idiopathic subfertility (mean duration: 5.7 year, range 2–21 years) were treated during 2870 cycles by three assisted conception methods (each involving mild ovarian stimulation): I timed intercourse (TI), II intrauterine insemination (IUI), III in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET). Treatment started with TI in most cases and then changed to IUI after three to six cycles. Couples who failed to conceive were treated after another 3–9 cycles by IVF/ET. An overall cumulative pregnancy rate of 80.2% was reached after 18 treatment months. The pregnancy rates per treatment cycle were: TI 5.3%, IUI 6.9%, IVF/ET 15.8% (per oocyte retrieval)
