Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of carboplatin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma was studied in five children with brain tumors (four medulloblastomas and one ependimoblastoma) who underwent preirradiation treatment with carboplatin. Carboplatin pharmacokinetics was studied following the administration of 600 mg/m2 as a 1-h infusion. Four children were treated a few weeks after surgery, whereas one child with an unresectable tumor was treated prior to surgery. All patients had a ventricular-peritoneal CSF shunt connected to a subcutaneous reservoir. Total platinum and free carboplatin were measured. The mean AUC values for free carboplatin in CSF and plasma were 2.29±1.20 and 8.18±1.27 mg ml−1 min, respectively. The mean ratio of CSF AUC to plasma AUC was 0.28 (range, 0.17–0.46). Both plasma peak levels and AUC values showed limited interpatient variability. On the other hand, carboplatin levels in CSF showed substantial interpatient variability, with a〉5-fold difference in peak levels and a 3-fold difference in AUC values being recorded. The interpatient difference in CSF pharmacokinetics may have been related at least in part to the different anatomical alterations induced by the surgical procedures or by the presence of a large tumor mass. In the four evaluable patients exhibiting macroscopic residual tumor, we observed one complete remission (CR) and two partial remissions (PR) following two cycles that consisted of two doses of 600 mg/m2 carboplatin given on 2 consecutive days (total dose, 1200 mg/m2) and were separated by a l-month interval. These results may give some indication as to the optimal dose and schedule for carboplatin administration in the treatment of primitive neuroectodermic tumors (PNET).

Notes: Abstract We report new FIR laser lines from 13CH2F2 molecules optically pumped by a waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser allows the pumping of 13CH2F2 vibrational transitions of large offset. 34 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 113.1 μm to 491.4 μm in wavelength, thus increasing the number of known FIR laser lines from this important molecule to 99. For all the new lines and many (36) of those known previously, precise offset measurements through the transferred Lamb-dip technique were performed. The frequency of six new laser lines was also directly measured by heterodyne detection with known laser lines.

Notes: Abstract By using high resolution infrared Fourier transform data on 13CD3OH and the 10P(22) and 10P(24) lines of a waveguide CO2 laser to optically pump this methanol isotope, eight new FIR laser lines were observed. The frequencies of five laser lines were directly measured by heterodyne detection with already known laser lines. Particularly interesting are the lines pumped by the 10P(24) line, since a triade of emissions could be completely assigned.

Notes: Abstract A systematic investigation of13CD3OH infrared transitions around CO2 laser line emissions is performed by means of optoacoustic detection. Using a waveguide CO2 laser of 290 MHz tunability and, in some cases, an acoustooptic modulator to provide an extension of 180 MHz, 108 transitions are observed. Measurements of pump off-set and relative intensity have been performed. The data may be compared with those previously reported of high resolution Fourier Transform spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract We present frequency measurements of 85 Far Infrared (FIR) laser lines ranging from 2 748 GHz to 421 GHz. We use the heterodyne technique of mixing FIR laser transitions and microwave radiation on MIM point contact diodes to determine the FIR frequencies.

Notes: Summary Several studies pointed out an altered stool pattern as the most common side effect of auranofin therapy. The major mechanism in the aetiology of auranofin-induced impairment in bowel habit seems to be the inhibition of Na+/K+ A TPase in the gut. In vitro experiments proved that auranofin can affect active bile acid (BA) reabsorption in rat terminal ileum; this action, due to the ability of the drug to reduce Na+ pump activity by inhibiting Na+/K+ATPase, may make a significant contribution to the auranofininduced diarrhoea. The ability of auranof in to reduce the Na+ gradient necessary for active BA reabsorption, however, could cause a decrease of serum BA levels in patients taking auranofin before or without the development of an overt diarrhoea. We measured fasting and postprandial serum conjugated BA levels in 10 female rheumatoid arthritis patients before and after one month and two months' auranofin treatment. No patient developed diarrhoea during the chrysotherapy. When oral gold salt therapy was started, we observed a slight decrease in serum BA levels, but difference was not statistically significant. We can conclude that auranofin therapy does not cause BA malabsorption in patients who do not develop diarrhoea during the treatment.

Notes: Abstract We examined 444 dogs by visiting farms and peripheral districts on the Gargano promontory (Province of Foggia, Apulia, South Italy). Clinical examination and immunofluorescence antibody test for leishmaniasis were performed. Bone marrow and lymph node samples obtained from 25 dogs with positive serological test were cultured on Tobie-Evans medium. The results obtained show both a higher seropositivity rate for canine leishmaniasis (14.4%) and a higher percentage of asymptomatic dogs with positive serological test (53.1%) compared to previous research in the same area. Seven strains isolated from infected dogs belonged to Leishmania infantum species zymodeme Montpellier 1. None of 82 sera of humans living in close contact with infected dogs were positive for leishmaniasis.

Notes: Abstract We have increased the frequency tunability of our CW waveguide CO2 lasers by means of an acoustooptic amplitude modulator, operating at the fixed frequency of 90 MHz. The up-shifted, or down-shifted, laser optical sideband can be generated independently by adjusting the orientation of the modulator. The efficiency is larger than 50%. The frequency tunability of the CO2 laser around each laser line is thus increased by 180 MHz. To demonstrate the possibilities of this method, a source composed of the above modulator and of a CW, 300 MHz tunable waveguide CO2 laser has been used for the search of new large offset FIR laser lines from optically pumped CH3OH and13CH3OH molecules. As a result 15 and 10 new large offset laser lines were discovered respectively. New assignments of some laser lines are also proposed. We have also measured the Stark effect, the offset, and the polarization of other already known lines. In particular a Stark effect frequency tuning of about 1 GHz is demonstrated for a laser line at 208.399 μm.

Notes: Abstract By using an acoustooptic modulator we extend the 300 MHz tunability of a waveguide CO2 laser to 480 MHz. The CD3OH was optically pumped by the 10R(32), 10R(34), and 10R(36) CO2 laser lines, and 17 new FIR laser lines were discovered. The Stark effect on previously known FIR laser lines was investigated, and some tentative FIR laser lines assignments are suggested.

Notes: Abstract The technique of optical pumping in polar molecules is the most efficient for Far-Infrared (FIR) laser generation, providing also a versatile and powerful tool for molecular spectroscopy in this spectral region. Methanol (CH3OH) and its isotopic varieties are the best media for optically pumped FIR laser, with over thousand lines observed, and the most widely used for investigations and applications. In this sense, it is important organize and make available catalogues of FIR laser lines as complete as possible. Since the last critical reviews of 1984 [1] on methanol and its isotopic varieties [2,3,4], over hundred papers have been published dealing with hundreds of new FIR laser lines. In 1992 a review of FIR laser lines from CH3OH was presented [5]. In this communication we extend this work to the other methanol isotopes, namely CH3OD, CD3OH, CD3OD,13CH3OH,13CD3OH,13CD3OD, CH3 18OH, CH2DOH, CHD2OH and CH2DOD.
