    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une variante de la méthode de Wagner d'allongement du fémur utilisant l'Orthofix, a été appliquée à 62 adultes d'âge moyen de 26 ans et demi, présentant des séquelles de poliomyélite. La première étape est presque identique à la méthode de Wagner originale, toutefois l'allongement a été réalisé à partir du 5 – 7 éme jour, au rythme de 1.5 mm par jour. Pour la deuxième étape, une plaque vissée a été mise en place et un greffon cortico-spongieux iliaque a été inséré entre les deux fragments, de préférence en compression. Cette méthode ne nécessite pas d'immobilisation plâtrée et permet la mobilisation précoce du genou ainsi que la reprise précoce de l'appui sous couvert d'une orthèse. L'allongement moyen obtenu a été de 4.2 cms; il y a eu 34% de complications secondaires, avec un recul de 3 ans et 2 mois en moyenne.
    Notes: Summary A modified Wagner technique using an Orthofix was employed for femoral lengthening in 62 skeletally mature patients with residual poliomyelitis. The first stage was similar to that of the original Wagner technique. However, distraction was started after 5 to 7 days at a rate of 1.5 mm per day. At the second stage, a neutralization plate was applied and a corticocancellous iliac strut graft inserted in the distracted site, preferably under compression. Cast immobilisation was not used and a long leg brace with a thigh corset allowed early knee movement and weightbearing. The average age at operation was 26 years and 6 months. The period of follow-up averaged 3 years and 2 months, and the average amount of lengthening was 4.2 cm. The overall rate of complication was 34%.

    Notes: Abstract The case of a 13-year-old girl with striking carpal and tarsal osteolysis (sporadic occurrence) is reported. MRI confirmed the total absence of carpal bones and medial tarsal bones. Dense fibrocollagenous tissue replaced the spaces left by the resorbed bones. Arteriography showed occlusion of the radial artery at the level of the physis of the distal radius with increased tortuosity of the ulnar artery. There was no major vascular occlusion in the foot except for some indistinct and blurred tarsal branches of the anterior tibial artery.

    Notes: Abstract Massive skull base injuries require detailed preoperative neurological and neurovascular assessment prior to undertaking surgical repair of isolated cranial nerve deficits. We present the management of a patient with traumatic facial paralysis, cerebrospinal fluid leak, and carotid artery cavernous sinus fistula as the result of a gunshot wound to the skull base. The carotid artery cavernous sinus fistula was ultimately controlled with superselective embolization via the vertebral artery. The facial nerve injury was then safely treated with mobilization of the labyrinthine and vertical segments to allow a primary anastomosis.

    Notes: Summary Cultivar Peking has been extensively used as a source of resistance to Race 3 and Race 5 of soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines I., and Peking genes for resistance are present in a wide range of resistant soybean cultivars. Peking is also used as a host differential in the soybean cyst nematode race classification system. Thirteen Peking lines maintained in the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection and in several breeding programs were surveyed using RFLP and RAPD markers for genetic characterization. Based on the molecular diversity combined with reaction to soybean cyst nematode, Peking genotypes from a common original source were identified. Peking lines PI 297543 (introduction from Hungary), and PI 438496A, PI 438496B and PI 438496C (introductions from Russia) represented unrelated germplasms. Identified molecular polymorphism can be used to validate the genetic purity of Peking lines used as host differentials for soybean cyst nematode classification system as well as utilization of an individual germplasm line in genetic-breeding programs.

    Notes: Abstract A thin copper layer (35 nm) deposited on SiO2 has been subjected to ion-beam mixing with 80 keV Ar+ at room temperature, 550 and 650 K. Interfacial properties of irradiated samples were investigated using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, grazing-angle X-ray diffraction, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and scratch testing. The adhesion of the copper film was improved by a factor of three at a dose of 1.5 × 1016 Ar+ cm−2 by the ion-beam mixing at room temperature, while the high-temperature ion-beam mixing enhanced the adhesion by a factor of five. Ballistic mixing plays a role in the improvement of adhesion for the room-temperature ion mixing, and the creation of Cu2O phase induced by ion-beam mixing contributes to the enhancement of adhesion at high temperature.

Based upon these ellipsoids, two criteria each for detecting optimal basic and nonbasic variables prior to optimality in interior-point methods are obtained.
