    Notes: Diphenylamine (DPA) is an antioxidant which is widely used on apples for scald control during fruit storage. Since appreciable residues of DPA remain on apples when sold, it was of interest to study the extent of possible transfer of the compound to cider. Cider was expressed from five cultivars ofDPA-treated apples following their storage and the original fruit, the pomace and cider was analyzed for DPA residues. Only traces of the compound were found in cider with virtually all of the DPA found concentrated in the pomace. The toxicologic significance of the results are discussed.

    Notes: Ten male and ten female brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) ranging in weight from about 500 to 3500 grams were caught in Lake Ontario. Opposite sides of each individual fish were randomly processed and trimmed to yield skinned or unskinned fillets. Skinning resulted in an increase in the average concentration of total mercury in the fillets of fish of either sex but the increases were not significant.With the exception of the unskinned fillets of the male fish, the concentration of mercury in the fillets increased significantly as the weight of the fish of either sex increased. The fillets of the male fish appeared to be higher in mercury than that in the corresponding fillets of female fish of comparable weight. In all instances, the concentrations of mercury in skinned and unskinned fillets were well below the 1 ppm fresh weight action level of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

    Notes: Abstract Currently, there is much activity in composting yard wastes (leaves, twigs, grass), sewage sludge and portions of municipal solid wastes (MSW) in the United States. The resultant compost is typically applied to agricultural or recreational land. A nationwide analytical survey was therefore conducted of 21 toxic and nutrient elements, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and gamma emission in 26 composts sampled nationwide in 1991. Those composts produced solely from sludge or MSW tended to be higher in metals such as Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn as compared to totally yard waste compost. Molybdenum, P and Se were higher in composted sewage sludge and Na and Pb in composted MSW than in yard waste compost. PCBs and gamma emission were low or not detectable in most compost samples. Shards of metal and glass found particularly in MSW-containing composts would detract from its application especially in recreational areas. References dealing with the reactions of metals in composts and environmental effects of compost application to land are cited.

    Notes: Abstract Samples of yard waste compost and sewage sludge compost were analyzed for toxic and nutrient elements and PCBs to assess variations in their concentrations as a function of the time of delivery of the initial organic material to the same composting site. In general, the variations in composition found were remarkably small. Generally, the samples of sludge compost were higher in Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mo, Na, P, Pb, S, Se, Zn, and PCBs than those of the yard waste compost. The latter was higher in Cr, Ni, K, Mg, and Si. Possible factors affecting compost composition are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) of known age from 1 to 12 years were taken from Cayuga Lake in central New York State in 1991 and p,p′-DDE and mercury were determined in their flesh. The concentrations of p,p′-DDE and mercury increased significantly (p〈0.001) with increasing age of the fish. The concentration of p,p′-DDE also increased significantly (p〈0.001) with increasing fat content. The concentrations of p,p′-DDE were much lower than those found in Cayuga Lake trout of similar age captured in 1978.

    Notes: Abstract There is currently much public opposition to the construction of municipal refuse incinerators in the United States owing to health concerns about emitted toxicants. In this study, 19 elements and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in grasses sampled upwind and downwind from a municipal refuse incinerator which had no emission control devices. Concentrations of Cd, Mo, Hg, Zn, Fe, and Pb were generally highest immediately adjacent to the incinerator. Foliar concentration of the metals, Cd, Mo, Zn, Fe, and Pb was inversely related to the logarithm of the distance downwind from the incinerator. Foliar concentration of Hg decreased linearly with distance downwind. Polychlorinated biphenyls were not detectable in any of the grass samples possibly due to their thermal destruction during incineration or greater dispersion because of their higher vapor pressure. The metal concentration in plants in the vicinity of such incinerators will be affected by the composition of the refuse, incinerator design and stack height, combustion operating conditions, emission control devices, the nature of the plant surface, the water solubility of deposited metal-containing particulates, prevailing weather conditions and root uptake of such metals by plants.

    Notes: Abstract Ashes, obtained from about one-fourth of the operating municipal refuse incinerators in the United States, were analyzed for a range of organic toxicants and mutagens. Thirty percent of the ash samples, which consisted of bottom ash or bottom ash-fly ash mixtures, contained 20–74% organic matter. Thirty percent of the ashes contained direct-acting and/or promutagens which revertedSalmonella typhimurium TA98 or TA100. Sixty percent of the ashes contained more than 5 ng/g of polychlorinated biphenyls. The concentration of tetra- and pentachlorinated biphenyls were higher than the mono-, di-, hepta- and octachlorinated biphenyls. A similar distribution of congeners was seen in polychlorinated dibenzodioxins found in the ashes. The major volatileN-nitroso compounds found in the ashes wereN-nitrosodimethylamine andN-nitrosomorpholine. Other classes of compounds which were found in the ashes included chlorinated benzenes, phthalates, and substituted benzothiophenes.
