Notes: Summary The role of neutron spectrometry is discussed as a diagnostics of plasmas of compact ignition experiments. The situation with regard to instrumentation (including diagnostic capabilities and limitations) is reviewed on the basis of existing experience and new solutions are proposed as required by compact-plasma observations. Especially, the question of time resolution is addressed and a dedicated spectrometer system is devised to make use of the high neutron fluxes expected for the nuclear-burn phase of compact plasmas. It is shown that a system of three neutron spectrometers can provide adequate data on ion temperature of D and DT plasmas over a range of plasma conditions of interest and with the required accuracy. The diagnostic output from this neutron spectrometer system is presented especially with regard to flash ignition studies.

Notes: Summary A new experimental method for determining the radial deuterium temperature profileT D(R) in axisymmetrical toroidal fusion plasmas is presented. The method is based on a generalized Abel inversion of neutron brightness data providing the radial neutron emissivity profile of the plasma. This profile, combined with information on the deuterium density profile, is used to determineT D(R) under the assumption that the ion velocity distribution is Maxwellian. Results are presented here from the analysis of JET data. It is found that, for typical JET plasma conditions, the dominant source of uncertainty arises from the high plasma impurity level and the fact that it is poorly known; these problems can be expected to be remedied and neutron brightness measurements would be expected to be very effective (especially in high-density plasmas) as aT D(R) diagnostics.

Notes: The problem of the propagation of a harmonic temperature perturbation in a plasma with both diffusive and nondiffusive energy transport is addressed. The energy flux is modeled by two (radially varying) effective coefficients for the diffusive and nondiffusive transport, and the effects of perturbed energy sinks and of cylindrical geometry are taken into account. A simple, local relationship is found between the two transport coefficients and the gradients of the phase and amplitude of the temperature perturbation. This relationship can be used for the interpretation of heating modulation experiments, provided data at different modulation frequencies are available. Since a harmonic density perturbation in a plasma follows a similar linearized transport equation, a similar model can be applied also to density modulation experiments.

Notes: The basic factors setting the performance limits of the time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer for 2.5-MeV neutrons as used for tokamak plasma diagnostics are analyzed. Special scintillator designs are proposed for best performance. Examples of diagnostic uses of the TOF spectrometer are also given.

Notes: The fuel density (given by nd+nt and nd/nt) is one of the important parameters to determine and control in burning DT plasmas. Here, we propose that nd and nt be deduced from data on the dd and dt neutron energy distributions to be recorded with a neutron spectrometer having energy selective response to the plasma neutron flux. The potential diagnostic capabilities of the magnetic proton recoil spectrometer system are tested for the measuring conditions to be presented by the next step tokamaks such as ITER.

Notes: The count rate capability of high-resolution neutron spectrometers for fusion plasmas is discussed. In particular, the question of the intrinsic rate limitations in neutron time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometers is assessed quantitatively for two design approaches where the proton recoils from n+H scatterings are detected with in-beam and out-of-beam detectors. It is found that the count rate capability limit lies in the range 50–400 kHz for TOF depending on approach. Comparison is made with other types of neutron spectrometers for fusion experiments. It is shown, for the first time, that neutron spectrometers fall into distinct categories depending on the underlying detection methods and that this information can be used for assessing capability limits of neutron spectrometry as a diagnostic for fusion plasmas.

Notes: Abstract In this matched-pair study 139 pregnant women were matched on the basis of age to an equal number of non-pregnant women with no signs of genital infection. The mean age was 28.7 years (range 20–41). The cut-offs used for detection of chlamydial antibody were 1:64 and 1:128 for IgG and 1:16 for IgA. IgG antibody at 64 was detected in 37.4% of pregnant women, compared to 46% of controls (p=0.145). There was, however, a statistically significant difference between the groups for IgG at 128 (gravidae=15.8%; controls=28%;p=0.014). IgA were detected in 8.6% and 16.5% of subjects, respectively (p=0.047). IgG levels did not vary with increasing age among the pregnant women, but rose significantly with age in non-pregnant controls (logistic regressionp-values=0.011 and 0.006, for IgG at 64 and 128, respectively). IgG-positive women in the control group tended to be older than pregnant IgG-positive women (p=0.06). These differences could not be explained by marital status, parity or use of oral contraceptives. In view of the lack of epidemiological differences, biological explanations might be invoked.

Notes: Abstract In recent years Chlamydia trachomatis has emerged as a significant cause of acute salpingitis and reproductory failure. In this study, 85 women suffering from primary infertility and 85 parous women as control group were screened for C. trachomatis genital infection by means of cell culture and antigen detection on genital samples as well as the detection of anti-chlamydial antibodies in blood. C. trachomatis was detected in 31.8% of infertile women and 5.8% of fertile subjects. Isolation of C. trachomatis in cell culture proved to be the most reliable diagnostic tool when compared to immunofluorescence staining on smears and serology. Although the latter may be considered of great value in epidemiological researches, culture isolation should be associated for the diagnosis of active infection.
