Notes: A 19-channel grating polychromator is developed to measure the temporal evolution of the electron cyclotron emission spectrum in the second and third harmonics in MTX tokamak with an aim to determine the electron temperature in ohmically heated thermal plasmas as well as the electron energy distribution function in gyrotron and free-electron laser-pumped nonthermal plasmas. The spectrometer can cover a spectral range of about 0.3 to 1.4 mm and deliver a maximum spatial resolution of about 1 cm radially. A combination of a 90° off-axis paraboloidal mirror as the collimating element and a toroidal mirror to focus the diffracted beam yields images on the exit slits with a modest astigmatic distortion. Liquid-helium-cooled InSb detectors are installed in nine channels and associated electronics are optimized for a very low noise and fast response time ( ∼ 2 μs). A faster detector element, with response 〈 100 ns, is envisioned for the remaining ten channels.

Notes: The characteristics of a 30 mA, 35 kV H− beam from a volume source have been determined using emittance measurements. A low energy-beam transport (LEBT) system consisting of six electrostatic quadrupole lenses and a short (about 5 cm long) single-stage einzel lens is designed with the aim of transporting the beam over a distance of about 30 cm and focusing a clean, matched beam into a radio-frequency quadrupole accelerator of the Superconducting Super Collider. The system parameters are chosen on the basis of simulation of beam dynamics. The emittance growth in the LEBT section is within a factor of about 1.5 and this satisfies the requirement of the emittance budget. The LEBT system is designed to be mechanically rugged.

Notes: The current trends of research and development work in ion-beam microlithography are examined with particular emphasis on the choice of ion sources and the beam parameters. The common approach with duoplasmatron-type ion sources for projection ion-beam lithography is revisited, and the suitability of H− beams is examined. The beam brightness and energy spread, which constitute the figure of merit of a beam, appear to be better in the case of H− beams. From a surface plasma source type discharge operating under stable condition, H− beams with an emission current density of ∼1–5 A/cm2 and a normalized brightness of ∼7×1012 A/(m rad)2 can be extracted. Several key issues of an ion-projection lithography device, such as the ion source parameters, beam optics, and thermal load are discussed.
