Notes: Abstract Gassy sediments are detectable acoustically in subbottom profiles of Canada's Fraser Delta slope and prodelta areas. Interstitial gas is typically represented by zones of acoustic turbidity on high-resolution seismic profiles and by gas brightening on air-gun profiles. The top of the acoustically turbid zone is generally highest within the sediment column closest to the river mouths and lies within 10 ms (two-way travel time) of the sea floor in a nearly continuous area that covers over 530 km2. Most of the gas is believed to be biogenic in origin, although thermogenic gas derived from underlying Tertiary sedimentary rocks may be present in places.

Notes: Geoelectrical sounding profiles were collected on the southern part of the Fraser River delta, to provide a geophysical estimate of the subsurface structure and geotechnical properties. The differences between emergent and intertidal areas were assessed, and the geoelectric technique was found to be a viable one in an intermittently exposed tidal-flat environment. The subsurface geoelectric structure provides a link between reflection seismic data sets for Georgia Strait and the lower mainland. The survey was intentionally designed to complement the conventional exploration information for this basin and the shallow high-resolution seismic and drilling which focused on the unconsolidated Quaternary section. The electrical models consist of three layers: (I) electrically-conductive, porous, saturated and under-saturated marine silts, sands and gravels, overlying (II) less conductive and more consolidated marine clays, and variably reworked glaciomarine deposits together with weathered clastic sedimentary bedrock, which in turn overlies (III) less porous, more resistive, relatively unweathered bedrock. Estimates of thickness and geotechnical properties are obtained for shallow layers which are not available from either the short boreholes or shallow high-resolution seismic lines. This information is particularly useful in appraising the liquefaction potential of the unconsolidated layers due to earthquake risk.

Notes: Melasma is a common disorder of cutaneous hyperpigmentation predominantly affecting the faces of women. Little is known about the aetiology of melasma, and treatment is frequently disappointing. Topical tretinoin is of benefit in treating other forms of hyperpigmentation, for example liver spots, and we therefore investigated its effectiveness in melasma. Thirty-eight women completed a randomized, vehicle-controlled study, in which they applied 0.1 % tretinoin (n=19) or vehicle cream (n=19) once daily to the face for 40 weeks. At the end of treatment 13 (68%) of 19 tretinoin-treated patients were clinically rated as improved or much improved, compared with 1 (5%) of 19 in the vehicle group (P=0.0006). Significant improvement first occurred after 24 weeks of tretinoin treatment. Colorimetry (an objective measure of skin colour) demonstrated a 0.9 unit lightening of tretinoin-treated melasma and a 0.3 unit darkening with vehicle (P=0.01); these results correlated with clinical lightening (r=0.55, P=0.0005). Histologically, epidermal pigment was reduced 36% following tretinoin treatment, compared with a 50% increase with vehicle (P=0.002). Reduction in epidermal pigment also correlated with clinical lightening (r=0.41, P=0.01). Moderate cutaneous side-effects of erythema and desquamation occurred in 88% of tretinoin-treated and 29% of vehicle-treated patients.Topical 0.1% tretinoin produces significant clinical improvement of melasma, mainly due to reduction in epidermal pigment, but improvement is slow.

Notes: Abstract A method for measuring radium activity using electrodeposition onto stainless steel from solutions to which platinum ions have been added was developed. This gave high recovery with reduced electroplating times, and yielded deposits giving alpha-spectra of high resolution. Retention of the decay products in the deposit allows inference of some Ra isotopes from measurement of the activities of the high energy Po daughters. Application of the method to determination of226Ra in a marine manganese deposit is described.

Notes: Resin transfer molding (RTM) of advanced fiber architecture materials promises to be a cost effective process for obtaining composite parts with exceptional strength. However there are a larger number of material processing parameters that must be observed, known, and/or controlled during the resin transfer molding process. These include the viscosity both during impregnation and cure. In-situ sensors which can observe these processing properties within the RTM tool during the fabrication process are essential. This paper will discuss recent work on the use of frequency dependent electromagnetic sensing (FDMS) techniques to monitor these properties in the RTM tool. Our objective is to use these sensing techniques to address problems of RTM scaleup for large complex parts and to develop a closed loop, intelligent, sensor controlled RTM fabrication process.
