Notes: The magnetization curves of a DyBa2Cu3Oy crystal prepared by the melt-textured growth method were measured from 10 to 85 K with the magnetic field parallel to the c axis. The scaling behavior of the virgin magnetization curves is observed and explained in terms of an extended Bean model.

Notes: Abstract Complex formation between 15-crown-5 and malononitrile was studied in twelve solvents by calorimetry. Thermodynamic parameters for the crown ether adduct were determined and used in a LFER analysis to ascertain the solvent effects on the complexation process. Enthalpy of solution data show that malononitrile is solvated by electron pair donation by the solvents and the crown ether is solvated by donating electron pairs to the solvents. The complex is more solvated than the monomers.

Notes: Abstract We theoretically analyze the properties of Fabry-Perot etalons which consist of photorefractive-crystal plates with asymmetric mirror reflectance. Peak transmissions and non-reciprocities are enhanced significantly compared with the symmetric photorefractive etalons. The effect of material absorption is also considered.

Notes: Abstract In a greenhouse experiment, effects of different phosphate fertilizer applications on soil Cd extracted by DTPA and NH4NO3 in relation to plant uptake of Cd were investigated. The soils used were a sand and a loam treated with lime to achieve three pHs ranging from 4.77 to 5.94 for the sandy soil and 4.97 to 6.80 for the loam soil. Oat (Avena sativa L.), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), and spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.), were used as test species. Application of the high-Cd NPK fertilizer (adding 12.5 μg Cd kg−1 soil) significantly increased the extractable soil Cd, especially the DTPA-extractable Cd. Use of phosphate rock adding as much Cd as the high-Cd NPK fertilizer did not increase the extractable Cd in either of the soils. Both DTPA- and NH4NO3-extractable Cd decreased with the increases in soil pH. The Cd concentrations and total Cd uptake of plants were significantly correlated with the soil Cd extracted by DTPA and NH4NO3.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the effects of different P fertilizers on the yields and Cd contents of oat (Avena sativa L.), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), and spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). These crops were grown in the greenhouse using soils treated with lime to achieve three pHs ranging from 4.77 to 5.94 for a sandy soil and 4.97 to 6.80 for a loam soil. The crop yields were generally not affected by liming or application of different kinds of P fertilizers, with a few exceptions. Application of Cd-containing NPK fertilizers in all cases tended to increase the Cd concentrations in crops, and the highest Cd concentrations in crops were obtained when the high-Cd NPK fertilizer was applied (adding 12.5 μg Cd kg−1 soil). Cadmium concentrations in crops in most cases decreased with increasing soil pH. The highest percent recovery of the added Cd by plant species in the sandy soil was found for inorganic Cd-salt and in the loam soil for low-Cd NPK fertilizer. Phosphate rock resulted in the lowest recovery of the added Cd by all the plant species in both soils, but was also an insufficient P-source of its low solubility.

Notes: Summary A procedure has been developed to determine the cut-off frequency in an algorithm to evaluate the localized modulus of elasticity (MOE) in lumber. MOE profiles have been artificially generated to serve as input for evaluation of the procedure. A noise component has also been added to the input record to test the robustness and accuracy of the procedure. Good agreement between program predictions and the known localized MOE values has been obtained. The efficiency of the procedure has also been tested using MOE profiles collected from experiments. The program performed efficiently and program predictions seemed reasonable.

Notes: Abstract Six different antigen preparations for use in an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to detect IgM, IgA and IgG antibodies toBordetella pertussis were evaluated using sera from 13 randomly selected culture-positive patients and from 87 patients with suspected pertussis during a pertussis outbreak. Based on results in 80 healthy control sera a specificity limit of 99.9 % was selected. Sera from all culture-positive patients reacted with at least one of the antigens. The sensitivity of the EIA using the individual antigen preparations was 85 % for filamentous hemagglutinin, 92 % for pertussis toxin, 62 % for 69 kDa outer membrane protein, 85 % for a pool of these three antigens, 54 % for sonicated whole bacteria and 69 % for 21 kDa pertussis toxin subunit S1. In the outbreak patient group 49 (56 %) of the initial sera reacted with at least one of five antigen preparations. The EIA using sonicated bacteria detected only 41 % of all seropositive cases compared with 51 % using filamentous hemagglutinin, 61 % using pertussis toxin, 65 % using 69 kDa OMP and 65 % using pooled antigen. It is concluded that either the pooled antigen or pertussis toxin antigen are suitable antigen preparations for use in the EIA for diagnosis of pertussis.
