    Notes: First phase formation has been determined in Cu binary thin film systems with Ti, Zr, Mg, Sb, Pd, and Pt using transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. CuTi, CuZr, CuMg2, Cu2Sb, Cu3Pd, and Cu3Pt are the first phases to form upon annealing the Cu/metal bilayers. The effective heat of formation model is used to predict first phase formation in 14 Cu/metal systems.

    Notes: Solid phase epitaxial regrowth of Sb implanted strained Si1−xGex alloy layers is reported. A set of Si0.92Ge0.08 alloys, MBE grown on (100)Si substrates, were implanted at room temperature with Sb+ ions at an energy of 200 keV and a dose of 1015 ions/cm2. These alloys were annealed in a RTA system at temperatures of 525, 550, and 575 °C for durations between 30 s and 10 min. Backscattering (channeling) measurements show an increase in the regrowth rate compared to furnace annealed Sb implanted (100)Si. Hall effect measurements show an increase in the carrier concentration as the amorphous/crystalline interface propagates to the surface. The concentration reaches a maximal value which exceeds the maximum solid solubility of Sb in Si at the annealing temperature by a factor of six. There is a reverse annealing tendency for longer annealing times.

    Notes: Fluorescence excitation, dispersed fluorescence, and picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies have been used to study the dimeric molecule 9,9'-bifluorenyl, isolated under supersonic jet conditions. The excitation spectrum reveals a splitting in several principal resonances of the S0→S1 excitation spectrum, which can be attributed to electronic coupling between the two fluorenyl moieties. The splitting, which for different vibronic transitions correlates with Franck–Condon factors, is consistent with an exciton model that includes higher electronic states. The splitting is reasonably well reproduced by a multipole interaction potential. Calculations have verified that the electron exchange coupling is small. Furthermore, the relative intensities of the resonances allow an estimate of the equilibrium geometry, suggesting that the molecular long axes have an angular displacement of 60°–70°, consistent with the geometry found by x-ray diffraction. A most interesting feature of this species is that it is weakly fluorescent in fluid solution, which has been attributed to activated conformational barrier crossing of the excited molecule. In contrast, the fluorescence quantum efficiency of the isolated molecule can be close to unity, the lifetime ranging from 18 to 20 ns at vibrational energies 〈1400 cm−1. Above this region, the fluorescence decay time decreases steadily, to ≈2 ns by 2550 cm−1, indicating the onset of a nonradiative relaxation channel. Since the molecule was also seen to exhibit vibrational relaxation at low energies (i.e., ≤400 cm−1), the relaxation dynamics observed above 1400 cm−1 reflect the existence of a conformational potential energy barrier in the isolated molecule.

    Notes: This study examines whether any regularity exists in the publication pattern among accounting researchers. The empirical results reveal that a strong bibliometric regularity exists in the accounting literature: the number of authors publishing in papers is approximately 1/nc of those publishing one paper. It is shown that the accounting literature conforms very well to the model with c=1.872 if data are taken from a large collection of journals. When applied to individual journals, the result shows that values of c range from 2.220 to 4.368. The graduates of seven graduate programs are found to account for more than one-third of the most prolific authors, indicating strong institutional dominance in the production of accounting literature.

    Notes: Abstract We model the shared buffer ATM switch as a discrete-time queueing system. The arrival process to each port of the ATM switch is assumed to be bursty and it is modelled by an interrupted Bernoulli process. The discrete-time queueing system is analyzed approximately. It is first decomposed into subsystems, and then each subsystem is analyzed separately. The results from the subsystems are combined together through an iterative scheme. The analysis of each subsystem involves the construction of the superposition of all the arrival processes to the switch. Comparisons with simulation data showed that the approximate results have a good accuracy.

    Notes: Abstract RH 5849, a non-steroidal ecdysteroid mimic, was found to cause consistent phase shifts in the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity of the blowfly, Calliphora vicina. This compound causes phase advances in the early subjective night and phase delays in the late subjective night. This effect is the opposite, but not the mirror image of the phase response curve obtained for 1 h light pulses. This suggests that ecdysteroids might act as entraining agents via the output pathway by feedback to “clock” neurons in the brain. A computer model based on 12 pacemaker neurons with circadian periods (τ values) from short to long without simulated feedback from the ecdysteroid system becomes arrhythmic; with feedback, the oscillators become synchronized to a common period. The possible role of ecdysteroids as endogenous synchronizing agents in the insect circadian system is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of SK&F 96365, a blocker of the receptor-operated Ca2+ channel, on contractilities and the Na+ channel of mouse diaphragm were studied. SK&F 96365 (10–50 µM) reversibly inhibited twitches, tetanic contractions and muscle and nerve action potentials. The IC50 was 17–24 µM. The inward Na+ current was suppressed and its recovery from inactivations delayed. Crotamine, a peptide toxin that binds to neurotoxin receptor site 3 of the muscle Na+ channel, enhanced the inhibitory effects of SK&F 96365 and reduced the IC50 to about 4 µM. Veratridine had similar effects, although it was less effective than crotamine. On the other hand, the crotamine-induced membrane depolarizations and spontaneous discharges of muscle action potentials were inhibited by SK&F 96365 noncompetitively. The inhibitory effects of tetrodotoxin and tetracaine were additive with those of SK&F 96365 but were enhanced slightly by crotamine. The results suggested that SK&F 96365 acts on a distinct site and blocks the Na+ channel of excitable membranes at a concentration range that inhibits the receptor-operated calcium channel.

    Notes: Abstract The complete larval development of Euphausia pacifica in the Yellow Sea is described and the stages are compared with larvae of E. nana. Euphausiid larvae examined in the present study were collected at 30 stations in the Yellow Sea in 1989. During the stages of Calyptopis III to Furcilia II, E. pacifica larvae are smaller than E. nana larvae but they are larger from Furcilia III onward. There are geographical variations in body size of Calyptopis III among the southern California waters, the eastern Japan waters, the Japan Sea, and the Yellow Sea; body size is smallest in the Yellow Sea and Japan Sea, while it is largest in southern California waters and intermediate in eastern Japan waters. Segmentation of antennal endopods was observed in the 5″6 to 5″1 furcilia forms in the Yellow Sea population, suggesting that this characteristic is not as reliable for identification of furcilia stages as the pleopods and terminal telson spines. Thus, we propose here that there are six furcilia stages of E. pacifica, instead of the seven previously reported by Boden (1950).
