    Notes: Three apple (Malus×domestica) cultivars and 11 Malus accessions have been investigated by the probe hybridization method on their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The gene probes used were: coxI, coxII, atpA, atp6, and atp9. Our results revealed enough variation to characterize ten mtDNA haplotypes among the Malus genotypes examined. The taxonomic and phylogenetic implications of mtDNA polymorphism are also discussed.

    Notes: Sputtered CoNiPt films prepared for high-density magnetic recording media have been studied by Brillouin scattering. The spin-wave spectra in the film are remarkably broadened with width 13 GHz (full width at half maximum), which is much larger than the width of 3 GHz in a film prepared by vapor deposition. Observation by a transmission electron microscope has clarified that the sputtered film consists of Co crystallites with a diameter of 50–100 A(ring), which are separated from each other. The remarkable damping of the spin waves in the sputtered CoNiPt film is caused by the film structure. The film is, however, elastically homogeneous, which is known from the undamped surface acoustic wave spectra. The result shows the segregation of the nonmagnetic Pt-related alloys takes place between the Co crystallites. The exchange stiffness constant was determined as 2.4×10−9 Oe cm2 in the sputtered film, which is 1/1.7 that in the vapor-deposited films.

    Notes: Abstract A murine model of accelerated aging, the senescence accelerated mouse (SAM), has been developed. There are three accelerated senescence-resistant (SAM-R) strains and eight senescence-prone (SAM-P) strains. The SAM-P strains have an earlier onset and more rapid advancement of senescence resulting from a significantly shorter lifespan compared with the SAM-R strains. Spontaneous cataracts have been found in some individuals of the SAM-P/9 strain. The SAM -P/1 strain, which was used in the present study, has such systemic senescent characteristics as senile amyloidosis and alopecia, but it was previously thought that cataract does not occur in this strain. However, we found cataractous changes in the lens of these animals at early stages of their life. The earliest change was the appearance of a ripple-mark body at about 3 months of age. The number of rippled rings increased with age. These changes later induced refractive distortion of retinal vessels. Whole-mount flat preparations of the epithelium showed that the number of cells was markedly decreased at the advanced stages of cataract. At the late stages of life the lens cortex became liquefied and developed into a mature cataract. Cataract formation in this strain may be related to reduced viability of the lens epithelium.

    Notes: Summary Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) have been used to detect chloroplast (cp) and mitochondrial (mt) DNA variation among 18 apple cultivars and three rootstocks. The distribution of RFLP patterns allowed the assignment of these genotypes into three groups of cytoplasmic relatedness. Our results also demonstrate maternal inheritance of cp- and mtDNAs in apple. Thus, the organelle DNA assay provides a convenient and reliable method to assess cytoplasmic diversity within the apple germ-plasm collection and to trace the maternal lineages involved in the evolution of apple.

    Notes: Abstract The works of the Sendai group on investigations of the properties of the trinucleon bound states3H and3He are reviewed in detail. For these mirror nuclei, results are summarized that have been obtained from rigorous solutions of the (Coulomb-modified) Faddeev equations for various realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials with inclusion of three-nucleon forces as well as chargeindependence-and charge-symmetry-breaking forces. It becomes evident that for most trinucleon bound-state observables quite reasonable results have been achieved.

    Notes: Summary Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity has been determined in apple landraces and cultivars, based upon restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for several mitochondrial genes. Our analysis includes three cultivars, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Delicious’, which represent the various patterns of mtDNA polymorphisms previously described (Ishikawa et al., 1992). A total of five RFLPs were detected, allowing classification of the apple genotypes into four cytoplasmic groups: GroupI, ‘Golden Delicious’-type; GroupII, ‘McIntosh’-type; GroupIII, ‘Delicious’-type; and Group IV, ‘Dolgo Crab’-type. European landraces and cultivars were assigned to Groups I, II, and III, while chinese crab apples were placed in either Group III or IV.

    Notes: Abstract Fluorine-doped silica glasses containing up to 2 wt% were prepared by the vapour-phaseaxial-deposition (VAD) sintering process. The characteristics of these glasses were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, vacuum-ultraviolet-ultraviolet (v.u.v-u.v.) spectroscopy, and viscosity measurements. From the Raman spectroscopic investigation, it has been shown that the Si-F bond structure in the fibres is the same as that in bulk glass and is not affected by codoped additives such as B2O3. From the u.v.-v.u.v, spectroscopic investigation, it has been shown that the absorption band at 7.6 eV in high-purity silica glass is removed with the addition of fluorine. This addition produces a silica glass with most excellent transparency in u.v. and v.u.v. regions. Also it was observed that the optimum addition is around 1 wt%. This fact proves that fluorine incorporation in glass prevents the generation of defects related to optical loss in fibres. From the viscosity study, it was found that the viscosity decreases with an increase of the fluorine content in glass and the activation energy also decreases with increasing fluorine content.
