Notes: Summary The problem of the construction of an equilibrium surface taking the surface tension into account leads to “Laplace-Young” equation which is a nonlinear elliptic free-boundary problem. In contrast to Orr et al. where an iterative technique is used for direct solution of the equation for problems with simple geometry, we propose here an alternative approach based on shape optimization techniques. The shape of the domain of the liquid is varied to attain the optimality condition. Using optimal control theory to derive expressions for the gradient, a numerical scheme is proposed and simple model problems are solved to validate the scheme.

Notes: Abstract Partial molar heat capacities $$\overline C _{p2}^o $$ and volumes $$\overline V _2^o $$ of some nucleic acid bases, nucleosides and nucleotides have been measured in 1m aqueous NaCl and CaCl2 solutions using Picker flow microcalorimeter and a vibrating tube digital densimeter. The partial molar heat capacities of transfer and volumes of transfer from water to the electrolyte solutions were calculated using earlier data for these compounds in water. The values of these transfer parameters are positive. The higher values for transfer to aqueous CaCl2 solutions reflect the stronger interactions of the constituents of the nucleic acids with Ca+2 ions than with the Na+ ions.

Notes: Abstract The rhizomes of Zingiber cassumunar exhibited strong fungitoxic action against Rhizoctonia solani, the damping-off pathogen. On chemical and spectral investigations, the antifungal compound was found to be zerumbone — a sesquiterpene. Its minimum effective dose against R. solani was 1000 ppm, much lower than some commercial fungicides. Zerumbone had fungistatic activity, a narrow fungitoxic spectrum and was not phytotoxic. Moreover, when used as a seed treatment, zerumbone could control damping-off disease of Phaseolus aureus caused by Rhizoctonia solani by 85.7%.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we define a hierarchy of distribution functions for simultaneous velocity, magnetic, and temperature fields. Some properties of the constructed distribution functions such as reduction, separation, and coincidence are discussed. Equations for the evolution of one- and two-point distribution functions have been derived. Finally, a comparison of the equation for the single-point distribution function in case of zero viscosity, negligible diffusivity, and infinite electrical conductivity is made with first equation of BBGKY hierarchy in the kinetic theory of gases.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we are concerned with incompressible MHD turbulence in a rotating system and have derived an equation for the rate of change of vorticity covariance of MHD turbulent flow. The result derived shows that the defining scalars α(r,t), β(r,t), and γ(r,t) for the rate of change of vorticity covariance solely depend on the defining scalars of the tensorsW ij, Pik,j, Fkj,i, Tik,j, andR kj,ialready defined in the text.
