Notes: A noninductive current drive concept, based on internal pressure-driven currents in a low-aspect-ratio toroidal geometry, has been demonstrated on the Current Drive Experiment Upgrade (CDX-U) [Forest et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 3559 (1992)] and further tested on DIII-D [in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1986, Proceedings of the 11th International Conference, Kyoto (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159]. For both experiments, electron cyclotron power provided the necessary heating to breakdown and maintain a plasma with high-βp and low collisionality (εβp∼1, ν*≤1). A poloidal vacuum field similar to a simple magnetic mirror is superimposed on a much stronger toroidal field to provide the initial confinement for a hot, trapped electron species. With application of electron cyclotron heating (ECH), toroidal currents spontaneously flow within the plasma and increase with applied ECH power. The direction of the generated current is independent of the toroidal field direction and depends only on the direction of the poloidal field, scaling inversely with magnitude of the later. On both CDX-U and DIII-D, these currents were large enough that stationary closed flux surfaces were observed to form with no additional Ohmic heating. The existence of such equilibria provides further evidence for the existence of some type of bootstrap current. Equilibrium reconstructions show the resulting plasma exhibits properties similar to more conventional tokamaks, including a peaked current density profile which implies some form of current on axis or nonclassical current transport.

Notes: Accurate equilibrium reconstruction and detailed stability analysis of a strongly shaped, double-null, βT=11% discharge shows that the plasma core is in the second stable regime to ideal ballooning modes. The equilibrium reconstruction using all the available data (coil currents, poloidal magnetic loops, motional Stark effect data, the kinetic pressure profile, the magnetic axis location, and the location of the two q=1 surfaces) shows a region of negative magnetic shear near the magnetic axis, an outer positive shear region, and a low shear region connecting the two. The inner negative shear region allows a large positive shear region near the boundary, even at low q (q95=2.6), permitting a large outer region pressure gradient to be first regime stable. The inner region is in the second stable regime, consistent with the observed axial beta [βT(0)=44%]. In the low shear region p' vanishes, consistent with Mercier stability. This is one way to extend the ballooning limit in shaped plasmas while maintaining stability against external kinks. The n=1 analysis shows that the plasma is unstable to an ideal internal mode, consistent with the experimental observations of a saturated internal m/n=1/1 mode. The core plasma pressure, not being limited by ballooning stability, appears to be reaching a local equilibrium limit at the magnetic axis.

Notes: The DIII-D tokamak is being upgraded to allow for divertor biasing, baffling, and pumping experiments. This paper gives an overview of the new diagnostics added to DIII-D as part of this advanced divertor program. They include tile current monitors, fast reciprocating Langmuir probes, a fixed probe array in the divertor, fast neutral pressure gauges, and Hα measurements with TV cameras and fiber optics coupled to a high-resolution spectrometer.

Notes: Abstract The application of a new apparatus for the mechanical analysis of residual stress is described; this enables the determination of the distribution of residual stresses of the first kind over the cross-section of bar-shaped specimens. Results of residual stress analysis on heat-treated specimens of heat treatable steel 42CrMo4 (1.7225) are presented and compared with those from the X-ray diffraction method and the incremental hole drilling method. The residual stresses measured by the X-ray diffraction method at the surface agree well with the results of the layer removal method, whereas in this case incremental hole drilling led to erroneous results.

Analysed was the development of the austenite structure and influencing the work softening processes depending on the deformation-temperature-time mode. The static softening processes were modelled mathematically by using Avrami's relationships.
