    Notes: Hydrogen adsorption on the (0001) beryllium surface is modeled using a Be45 cluster containing seven layers. The ab initio Hartree–Fock calculations employ effective core potentials and full D3h point group symmetry. Six low-lying electron configurations are investigated and the effect of electron spin coupling on the adsorption process is discussed. The adsorption of H on Be is calculated to be stable by 20 kcal/mol and lowers the work function by 1.3 eV.

    Notes: Ab initio spin–orbit full configuration-interaction calculations in the context of relativistic effective core potentials are reported for the weakly bound metal dimer LiBe, a three-valence-electron system. The effects of basis set on the energies of valence and Rydberg states of the cluster are discussed, as are the effects of configuration space selection on the energy of the latter states. Results at the dissociative limit are compared to the experimental atomic spectra. Potential-energy curves and spectroscopic constants are presented for the ground state and fourteen excited states, which includes the Li and Be 2p valence states, the Li 3s, 3p, 3d, and 4s Rydberg states, as well as three low-lying states of the molecular cation.

    Notes: Abstract A series of opiate compounds was tested for their ability to depress the probability that the protozoan Stentor coeruleus would contract in response to mechanical stimulation. Of these β-endorphin proved to be the most effective. The depressive effect of β-endorphin is concentration-dependent with an approximate E.C.50 of 3.0 μM and time-dependent with the maximum depression occurring 15 min after drug exposure. The effect of β-endorphin is blocked by the opiate antagonist naloxone and pertussis toxin suggesting that it is mediated by a G-protein coupled opiate receptor. β-endorphin does not alter responding to photic or electrical stimuli indicating its action is specific to the mechanical stimulus transduction mechanism. In agreement with this conclusion, electrophysiological studies reveal that β-endorphin decreases the amplitude of the mechanoreceptor potential without altering other membrane properties. Voltage clamp analysis shows that β-endorphin acts by decreasing inward currents through the mechanoreceptor channel at transmembrane potentials between -70 and + 20 mV without affecting the outward currents observed at more depolarized voltages. The fact that a mammalian neuromodulatory peptide is capable of producing a specific modulation of an ion channel in a unicellular eukaryote indicates that mechanisms of signal transduction and neuromodulation originated at an early stage in evolution.

    Notes: Abstract Assuming that the ln hydraulic conductivity in an aquifer is mathematically approximated by a spatial deterministic “surface”, or trend, plus a stationary random noise, we treat the problem of finding what the effective hydraulic conductivity of that aquifer is. This problem is tackled by spectral methods applied to a type of diffusion equation of groundwater flow, together with suitable coordinate transformations. Analytical (exact) solutions in terms of elementary functions are presented for one- and three-dimensional finite and infinite domains. Stability criteria are obtained for the solutions, in terms of a critical parameter, that turns out to involve the product of correlation scale and trend gradient. For the case of finite and symmetrical domains, additional provisions to insure the stability of numerical calculations of effective hydraulic conductivity are provided. Effective hydraulic conductivity is an important property, with potential applications in the calibrations of groundwater and transport numerical models.

    Notes: Abstract The circannual behaviour of glycosylation and protein synthesis in frog liver slices was studied following the incorporation of3H-galactose and14C-glucosamine into glycolipids and glycoproteins and3H-leucine into proteins. The activity of two enzymes the galactosyl-transferase and the N-acetyl-glucosaminyl-1-P-transferase was determined. The incorporations of both sugars into the soluble fraction and into the lipid extract present a maximum during the spring-summer period. The incorporation into the protein fraction displays a different pattern:14C-Glucosamine and3H-leucine incorporation increases from winter to a maximum in autumn; the incorporation of3H-Galactose has a sharp peak during spring. The pattern of glycosyltransferase activities is similar to the pattern of incorporation of the two saccharides into proteins, indicating these enzymes as important control points for glycosylation in Anurae.

    Notes: Abstract The changes in intracellular calcium concentration and IP3 production after the addition of epinephrine were analysed in adult, fetal (20th–22nd day of intrauterine life), and regenerating rat hepatocytes (4 h–24 h after partial hepatectomy) to determine whether the signal transduction is the same in quiescent proliferating and differentiating cells. The epinephrine treatment causes a significative cytosolic calcium transient in hepatocytes isolated in the last day of fetal life (22-day old) and in the early stage of regeneration (4 h). This effect is not significant in the previous stage of fetal life (20-day old) and at the onset of M phase of cell cycle after partial hepatectomy (24 h). [3H]myo inositol incorporation into IP3 and IP4 is higher in 20 day fetal and regenerating hepatocytes with respect to the control. In these cells the epinephrine does not affect basal level of IP3 and IP4, while it causes a substantial increase of these inositol phosphates in adult hepatocytes. [3H]myo inositol incorporation into PIP2 is very low at the 20th day of fetal life. Epinephrine has no effect on this parameter in fetal and regenerating hepatocytes. Our results show that the epinephrine signal is mediated differently in proliferating and in quiescent hepatocytes.

    Notes: Abstract Due to changes in lithostatic pressure, differential fracturing across bedding planes and irregularities in depositional environments, hydraulic conductivity exhibits heterogeneities and trends at various spatial scales. Using spectral theory, we have examined the effect of trends in hydraulic conductivity on (1) the solution of the mean equation for hydraulic head, (2) the covariance of hydraulic head, (3) the cross-covariances of hydraulic head and log-hydraulic conductivity perturbations and their gradients, and (4) the effective hydraulic conductivity. It is shown that the field of hydraulic head is sensitive to the presence of trends in ways that cannot be predicted by the classical analysis based on stationary hydraulic conductivity fields. The controlling variables for the second moments of hydraulic head are the mean hydraulic gradient, the correlation scale of log-hydraulic conductivity and its variance, and the slope of the trend in log-hydraulic conductivity. The mean hydraulic gradient introduces complications in the analysis since it is, in general, spatially variable. In this respect, our results are approximate, yet indicative of the true role of spatially variable patterns of log-hydraulic conductivity on groundwater flow systems.

    Notes: The relationship between cell proliferation and inositol lipid turnover has been studied by comparing the steady state of inositol derivative metabolism in quiescent and regenerating rat hepatocytes isolated at 4 h (G1 phase of first cell cycle) and 24 h (onset of M phase) after partial hepatectomy. The effect of two hormones able to regulate hepatic regeneration, insulin and vasopressin, has been considered, and the results can be summarized as follows: (i) at 4 h after partial hepatectomy, the precursor incorporation into inositol polyphosphates and the particulate phospholipase C activity increase with respect to quiescent hepatocytes, whereas the content of I1,4,5P3 does not change, suggesting an increased turnover of this molecule in this step of cell cycle priming; (ii) 24 h after partial hepatectomy, the radioactivity linked to IP3 and IP4, as well as soluble and particulate phospholipase C activity, and IP3 content increase, suggesting the presence, at the onset of M phase, of second messenger accumulation; (iii) only 24 h after partial hepatectomy, the inositol derivative metabolism is affected by vasopressin; and (iv) insulin exerts a modulatory role on inositol polyphosphate production without involving membrane-bound PLC activity or phosphoinositide hydrolysis. These data suggest that inositol-derived signal molecules are associated with hepatic regneration; moreover, the metabolic pathway of such compounds seems to be regulated so that only specific inositol phosphates are present in each step of the cell cycle. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
