Notes: Cough variant asthma is an occult form of asthma in which the only sign or symptom is chronic cough. It is a common problem amongst all ages that frequently goes unrecognized, leading to under diagnosis and under treatment. To characterize the pathophysiological abnormalities in these patients, we performed bronchial provocation tests with methacholine using the stepwise doubling concentration technique, and measured the concentration of methacholine and the severity of airway obstruction when wheezing was first detected. Airway hyper responsiveness, defined as PC20 in the cough variant asthma group was not significantly different from that of classic asthma. There was a good correlation between the PCW (the concentration of methacholine causing wheezing) and the PC20 with the PCW values higher than PC20 values in both groups. However, in the cough variant asthma group, the PCW: PC20 ratio was greater than that of the classic asthma group. Furthermore, the mean % fall in FEV1 at which wheezing was first detected in the former group was significantly larger than that of the latter group. The results indicated that the mechanism for the manifestation of cough without wheeze in the cough variant asthma may be a higher wheezing threshold, i.e. wheezing becomes audible at the greater degree of airway obstruction than classic asthma. They suggested that patients with cough variant asthma may represent a subset of asthmatic subjects whose airways are less able to produce a wheeze.

Notes: The hypothesis that repeated exposure to a specific allergen will further increase bronchial responsiveness to that allergen is supported by indirect evidence. However, it has not been tested as intensely in the laboratory setting, and in some cases, conflicting results are presented. In order to test the hypothesis in the atopic subjects, allergen inhalation challenge tests were performed in 29 house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pternyssinus) sensitive subjects with allergic rhinitis. Nine subjects displayed early asthmatic responses (EARs) to the first challenge (Group 1). Twenty subjects with no significant airway response were submitted to the second challenge 24 h later. Thirteen subjects showed EARs (Group FI) and two of these showed late asthmatic responses (LARs)aswell. In Group II, there were significant changes between the first and second challenge in post-allergen early phase FEV1, (88.1 ± 4.2 vs 71.7 ± 4.2%, baseline, P 〈 0.05) and in post-allergen late phase FEV1, (93.1 ± 3.4 vs 86.6 ± 7.8. P 〈 0.05). After the second challenge. PD20 (provocative dose of methacholine required to produce a 20% fall in FEV1) decreased significantly from the baseline values. When challenged separately with twofold dose of allergen, only three and one of the Group II showed EAR and LAR respectively. PD20 did not change significantly after this challenge. These results indicated that two repeated exposure to allergen dose, which is not enough to cause significant airway responses at a time, may provoke asthmatic airway responses in the subjects with allergic rhinitis and that this effect of priming is not attributed to the cumulative dose but to the consequent effect of repeated allergen exposure.

Notes: Abstract We establish that the category of hological spaces is equipped for calculus with complex scalars. This provides a theory of infinite dimensional holomorphy which allows maps to have nonconvex domains with empty interior. Some relatively elementary functions, hitherto excluded by the restrictive definitions of other theories, emerge as holomorphic maps.

Notes: Abstract In a rotating filter separator a suspension is introduced at one end of the annulus between a rotating porous inner cylinder and a fixed impermeable outer cylinder. The filtrate is removed through the inner cylinder and the concentrate is removed from the opposite end of the annulus from which the suspension entered. The flow in a rotating filter separator is circular Couette flow with a pressure-driven axial flow and a suction boundary condition at the inner cylinder. Flow visualization was used to determine the effect of the Taylor number, axial Reynolds number, and radial Reynolds number on the types of flows present in the annulus. A rich variety of secondary vortical flows appear, depending upon the flow parameters. The radial inflow at the inner cylinder delays the appearance of supercritical circular Couette flow and prevents the appearance of certain flow regimes that have a helical vortex structure. Nevertheless, the average azimuthal velocity measured using laser Doppler velocimetry indicates that the velocity profile is nearly the same for all supercritical flow regimes.

Notes: Abstract The OCT plasmid from Pseudomonas maltophilia N246-1 was transferred to Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides M1 with very low frequency (1.4–1.9 × 10−5 per recipient cell at pH 7–8 for a 3-hour reaction time). P. maltophilia N246-1 was able to utilize C8-C14 of n-alkanes, whereas R. gas-liquid chromatography determined that the broad range of carbon numbers of n-alkanes in crude oil was remarkably degraded by the transconjugant, R. sphaeroides M1-C1, compared with donor strain N246-1. The fact that donor and transconjugant strains simultaneously lost the capacity to utilize n-alkanes on L-broth medium suggests that the OCT plasmids are unstable. It was found that the OCT plasmid of P. maltophilia N246 was incompatible with the IncP-2 group of P. aeruginosa KCTC 11245.

Notes: Abstract The propagation of dense electron beams and the interaction with the ambient plasmas are studied by using two-dimensional electrostatic simulations. When the width of the beam is of the order of electron gyro-radius, the beam electrons move across the magnetic field lines and the beam-plasma interaction becomes prominent with the reduced beam density. When the width of the beam is of the order of ion gyro-radius, the propagation of beam electrons is possible only with the formation of the ion channel. However, since the time scale of the ionic motion is much longer than that of the electronic motion, most of the beam electrons return back to the original beam injection region

Notes: Summary Miscibility of bisphenol-A polycarbonate, PC, with methyl methacrylate/cyclohexyl methacrylate, PMCHM, copolymers were examined by glass transition temperature and lower critical solution temperature, LCST, behavior. PMCHM copolymers were found to be miscible with PC at levels of below 4% or less of CHM in weight. Relatively small amount of the comonomer markedly raised phase separation temperature on heating. This result can be rationalized by intramolecular repulsion effect reported earlier.

Notes: New block copolymers of polystyrene with polyesters have been synthesized and investigated as compatibilizing agents. The addition of block copolymers in immiscible blends of polybutylene terephthalate and (i) polystyrene, (ii) polystyrene/poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,4-phenylene oxide) as well as (iii) high impact polystyrene drastically reduced the dimensions of the dispersed phase and stabilized the phase growth with annealing time. Stress-strain curves for the binary blends indicate brittle behavior. The addition of more than 10 wt% of block copolymers transforms their brittle characteristics to ductile behavior.

Notes: The direct observation of flow in the internal mixer with various rotor geometries is described. With decreasing distance between two rotors, additional transfer flow was observed in the inter-rotor area. The FAN (Flow Analysis Network) method with assumption of fully filled, Newtonian fluid and isothermal condition was employed to simulate the flow patterns in the mixer with non-intermeshing and intermeshing rotors. The distributive mixing capability was considered in terms of the fractional flow in the mixer calculated for various rotor geometries.
