Notes: Abstract A female-specific protein from the hemolymph, and a related ovarian protein were identified in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas using immunological procedures. The latter protein was isolated from ovarian extract by a combination of precipitation in distilled water, ammonium sulfate fractionation, hydroxylapatite chromatography and gel filtration on a Sepharose 6B column, and was identified as a macromolecular glycolipoprotein of ∼500 kD; sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, under reducing conditions, revealed seven heterogeneous polypeptides. Using a specific antiserum against purified protein, we also examined the immunohistochemical distribution of the protein at light- and electron-microscopic levels. Light microscopy revealed its presence in the oocytes, and electron microscopy identified it in yolk granules and the vitelline coat of the oocytes. These results indicate that the purified protein is a vitellin-like protein. Since no organ other than the ovary reacted with the antiserum, it is probable that the protein is produced inside the ovary, probably autosynthetically by oocytes.

Notes: Summary Intracranial lipomas are very rare, probably congenital lesions. Though they can occur anywhere in the intracranial space, a good proportion of cases tend to be located around the midline. Review of the literature as well as our own three cases — which forms the basis of this article — shows that they are mostly asymptomatic. When symptoms occur, they are frequently the result of coexisting general clinical conditions. Lipomas used to be reported mainly as incidental findings at autopsy. Advances in neuro-imaging techniques have vastly improved the likelihood of their being discovered during life. At present however, significant increase in the reported incidence of these tumours is yet to be seen. Surgical extirpation of the tumour is not considered necessary in the majority of patients, many of whom show remarkable clinical improvement following shunt procedures for obstructive hydrocephalus as well as treatment of coexisting conditions such as epilepsy.

Notes: Summary Ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate concentrations and lactate/pyruvate (L/P) ratios were measured daily in 20 patients from day 1 to day 12 after subarachnoid haemorrhage due to ruptured aneurysms. Patients without symptomatic vasospasm were classified in Group 1, patients with symptomatic vasospasm were classified in Group 2, and patients who were Hunt and Kosnik grade 4 on admission clinically were classified in Group 3. Patients in all three groups had high CSF lactate concentrations on day 1, and, especially in Group 3, the high lactate was accompanied by an increased L/P ratio and a decreased CSF bicarbonate. Lactate concentrations in Group 1 decreased throughout the observation period. Lactate concentrations in Group 2 also decreased but then began to increase again on days 5 to 7, correlating well with the onset of cerebral vasospasm. The delayed increase of CSF lactate in Group 2 was also accompanied by increases in the CSF pyruvate level and the CSF L/P ratio. Daily monitoring of CSF lactate may thus serve as a chemical marker for cerebral vasospasm.

Notes: Summary Venous malformations in the posterior fossa are relatively rare. Although the introduction of CT and MRI has made them easier to detect, their treatment is still controversial. Based on our experience with six patients and a review of the literature, we have tried to establish guidelines for their treatment. Since they have a benign natural course and may provide venous drainage in the posterior fossa, venous malformation found incidentally, unruptured venous malformation with nonhaemorrhagic complications, and those accompanied by small intracerebellar haematoma of less than 2 cm in diameter due to their rupture, should be treated conservatively unless they are associated with a coexistent malformation. Venous malformation with intracerebellar haematoma larger than 3 cm or reexpansion of the haematoma due to rebleeding should be treated surgically by evacuation of the haematoma. Resection of venous malformations in the posterior fossa should be restricted to cases in which the malformation is small and does not serve as a functional venous drainage route. Radiation therapy, including the “gammaknife”, may be a treatment of choice in the future.

Notes: Abstract. The pathogenicity of the agent causing viral nervous necrosis (VNN) of striped jack, Pseudocaranx dentex (Bloch & Schneider), was examined in striped jack and other selected marine fish species. Fish were exposed to purified striped jack nervous necrosis virus (SJNNV) (0·1–100 ng ml−1) or homogenates of diseased striped jack larvae. Striped jack larvae (3·5 and 4·4 mm total length) were susceptible to the virus, but juveniles (78 mm) were not. The viral antigens were detected by indirect ELISA and the characteristic pathological changes, i.e. vacuolation in the retina and brain, were reproduced in the affected larvae. The infection was also established in healthy larvae by cohabitation with the diseased larvae. Larvae of red sea bream, Pagrus major Temminck & Schlegel, yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata Temminck & Schlegel, and goldstriped amberjack, Seriola lalandi Valenciennes, were not susceptible to SJNNV.

Notes: The specific heats of the ferromagnetic compounds ErNi, GdNi, and HoNi were measured by means of the adiabatic method in the temperature range 2.2–100 K. The specific heats for these samples showed anomalies corresponding to the magnetic orders. For the result of ErNi above Tc we could analyze by Cv=γT+αT3. The electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the Debye temperature θD were estimated to be 90 mJ/mol K2 and 130 K, respectively. The magnetic entropy was discussed on the basis of the energy-level splitting due to the crystalline field.

Notes: Electrical resistivity ρ and magnetic properties of light rare-earth Heusler single crystals RInCu2, R=La, Pr, Nd, and Sm, have been measured in the temperature range 1.3–300 K. No anomalies due to magnetic transitions were found in the temperature dependence of ρ and magnetic susceptibility χ above 4.2 K. Pr and Nd Heusler compounds have large negative paramagnetic Curie temperatures −19 and −29 K, respectively. The temperature dependence of χ is discussed on the basis of the crystalline field effect. For Sm compound, χ(T) is discussed by means of Van Vleck paramagnetism.

Notes: Transverse-mode characteristics of the distributed Bragg reflector-surface emitting laser diode with buried heterostructure were investigated as a function of the cavity size. Stable, fundamental transverse-mode operation was achieved for cavity openings of 4 μm in diameter and smaller. The effect of cavity size on threshold current and polarization characteristics is also discussed.
