    Notes: Abstract The clinical and epidemiological findings in children with epilepsy who experienced skin rashes induced by carbamazepine (CBZ) were prospectively evaluated. Thirty-three (9.9%) of 335 patients who received CBZ therapy experienced a skin rash. Seven had diffuse erythema, 13 miliary exanthema, 11 maculopapular or speckled reddish rash, 3 petechiae, and 2 mucocutaneous syndrome. A skin rash was more frequent in older children (over 6 years old). The skin rashes appeared soon after initiation of the therapy, i.e., from the 8th to 60th day (mean: 14.3±9.6 days) after the start of CBZ therapy and disappeared within a few days after discontinuation of the therapy. Haematological abnormalities (30.3%), such as leucocytopenia and thrombocytopenia, and hepatic dysfunction (27.3%) sometimes appeared concomitantly with the skin rash. CBZ is an effective and safe antiepileptic drug, but careful management is necessary on initiation of the therapy.

    Notes: Summary Calcium antagonists are currently most widely used for chronic cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). However, the vasodilatory effects of systemically administered calcium antagonists can be limited secondary to hypotension. We previously compared intrathecal and intravenous routes of administration of nicardipine. Intrathecal administration of nicardipine significantly dilated spastic basilar arteries on day 7 in a two-haemorrhage canine model of vasospasm. In the present communication, the effects of prophylactic, serial administration of intrathecal nicardipine on vasospasm was examined in 50 patients. Patients were classified as Fisher SAH group 3 and all had their aneurysms clipped within 3 days of SAH. Following placement of a cisternal drain, 2 mg of nicardipine was injected, three times each day for an average of 10 days. The control group consisted of 91 similar patients with cisternal drainage not treated with nicardipine. Intrathecal administration of nicardipine decreased the incidence of symptomatic vasospasm by 26%, angiographic vasospasm by 20% and increased good clinical outcome at one month after the haemorrhage by 15%. Postoperative angiograms revealed that patients in the nicardipine group showed less vasospasm of major cerebral arteries, near the tip of a drain in the basal cistern, but vasospasm in the A2 and M2 segments was not decreased. Radio-isotope cisternography suggested that nicardipine might not reach the subarachnoid space around A2 and M2 segments. Nine patients complained of headache probably secondary to nicardipine induced vasodilation. Two patients suffered from mengingitis, both were successfully treated. Intrathecal administration nicardipine appears to be effective in the treatment of vasospasm, but side effects were significant.

    Notes: The adsorbed state of benzene on the Si(100) surface at 90 and 300 K has been investigated by the use of thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Benzene is chemisorbed nondissociatively on Si(100) at 300 K, and the fractional saturation coverage corresponds to 0.27 benzene molecule per surface Si atom. It is proposed that chemisorbed benzene is di-σ bonded to two adjacent Si atoms saturating the dangling bonds on Si(100). At 90 K, physisorbed multilayers of benzene molecules are formed in addition to the chemisorbed layer. The multilayers consist of the metastable transition layer (α2) and "bulk'' multilayers (α3). These results are markedly different from those of benzene on the Si(111)(7×7) surface, and the origin of the crystal-face specificity is discussed.

    Notes: A picosecond transient hole-burning (THB) spectroscopy has been performed for organic dyes in solution. The THB spectra of rhodamine 640 have been found to show a time-dependent spectral change. This phenomenon corresponds to the solvent relaxation effect observed in the time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) spectrum. Although TRF spectrum is related only to the excited-state relaxation, THB spectrum is affected by both ground- and excited-state relaxations. Comparing with the TRF spectrum measured under the same exciting energy, we have clarified the presence of the ground-state relaxation. Further, the THB spectrum of styryl-8 gives an antihole between well-separated two holes corresponding to ground- and excited-state contributions. This may originate from the hole-filling effect due to the nonadiabatic relaxation from the nonequilibrium excited state to the ground state. The analysis based on a configuration coordinate model gives an overall understanding for these phenomena.

    Notes: The strain relaxation of InAsyP1−y layers grown on (001) InP substrates by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging. InAsyP1−y films with a thickness of 190 A(ring) were prepared, systematically varying the As content from y=0.30 and 0.77, corresponding to a lattice mismatch between 0.97% and 2.5%. Relaxation was anisotropic, with 60° misfit dislocations lying predominantly along [11¯0], with a much lower density of dislocations along [110]. For y(approximately-greater-than)0.48, CL and plan-view TEM observations show slip traces which make angles of about ±40° with the [11¯0] direction. These slip traces correspond to pure-screw dislocation segments (gliding on {111}) cross slipping to glide on planes approximately parallel to {011}.

    Notes: A frequency stabilization of a 633-nm internal-mirror He-Ne laser using the axial-mode beat frequency has been reported. The frequency stability achieved is 2.2 MHz (4.6×10−9) for an averaging time 1 s. The amplitude stability of this stabilized laser is 0.21%.

    Notes: Transverse-mode characteristics of the distributed Bragg reflector-surface emitting laser diode with buried heterostructure were investigated as a function of the cavity size. Stable, fundamental transverse-mode operation was achieved for cavity openings of 4 μm in diameter and smaller. The effect of cavity size on threshold current and polarization characteristics is also discussed.

    Notes: A reversible photochemical process has been investigated in Si-backbone poly(methylphenylsilane) films. Prolonged irradiation by ultraviolet light induces a blue shift in the optical absorption and a decrease of photoconductivity in these films. The changes are enhanced by an electric field and are removed by annealing near the melting temperature. It is pointed out that the dissociation of photocreated excitons into free carriersand the subsequent nonradiative recombination cause the photoscission of the Si backbones.
