Notes: Abstract Hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in tissues of marine organisms (mussels, crabs, benthic, and pelagic fishes) from six sites along the Catalan Coast (Western Mediterranean). Both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons as well as seven PCB congeners (PCB-28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) were quantified and differences in concentrations interpreted in terms of geographical distribution, trophic level, and biological cycle of the organisms. The bioaccumulation patterns of the different chemicals varied substantially. Hydrocarbons were metabolized along the food web, contrarily to PCBs, which exhibited a higher bioaccumulation in fishes. Considering 36 peaks of the GC-ECD profiles, encompassing 40 PCB congeners, from tri- to octa-chlorinated isomers, a relative enrichment was observed in the higher chlorinated ones from: mussels 〈 mullets 〈 tuna 〈 crabs. The slopes of the correlation plots between the bioconcentration factor (log BCF) and the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow) for the different PCB congeners reflected the feeding behavior of the organisms, mussels exhibiting a preferential uptake by direct partitioning from water, and mullets and crabs with a certain uptake from sediments. Increasing metabolic degradation following a similar trend among species was also observed for aromatic hydrocarbons and PCB congeners containing meta and para vicinal H-atoms. Accordingly, mussels and benthic fishes were the best indicators of coastal pollution in the water column and sediments, respectively, although the above features should not be overlooked in the interpretation of biomonitoring data.

Notes: Summary The availability of CT-Scanners and MRI coupled to stereotactic systems has made a stereotactic neurosurgical intervention an everyday tool. The indications, contra-indications and complications concerning intracranial tumours, the hypophysis, combined open stereotactic procedures, third ventriculostomy, diseases of the extrapyramidal motor system, pain, epilepsy, psychosurgery and the transplantation of embryonal cells are discussed.

Notes: Summary Modern neuro-imaging techniques have significantly increased the accuracy of stereotactic procedures and have thereby generated a renewed interest in guided brain surgery. This paper describes the neuroradiological aspects of stereotaxic target calculation (x-, y-, z-coordinates) using the Riechert-Mundinger (FisherTM) frame for computed tomography (CT). Selected cases are shown, illustrating patient positioning, CT technique, target identification and calculation. The importance of obtaining pre- and post-stereotaxic CT examinations is emphasized. Finally, future developments such as magnetic resonance (MR) guided stereotaxis and integrated functional-anatomical computer generated 3-dimensional maps, are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract Data on aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons in different species of edible bivalves collected in the Todos os Santos Bay (Bahia, Brazil) are reported for the first time along the South West Atlantic coast. The species and collection sites were selected for the identification of suitable regional sentinels and for the assessment of different coastal pollutant sources. To this end, the molecular marker concept was applied. A new series of biogenic C20, C25 and C30 highly branched isoprenoid alkenes were present in clean samples. Long-chain alkylbenzenes and specific distributions of isoprenoids, steranes and hopanes reflected local industrial activities. Petrogenic alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, ranged respectively between 0.1–42 μg/g wet wt. and 0.1–9.1 μg eq. chrysene/g wet wt., the higher levels being found in the neighborhood of an oil refinery and a plant oil industry.Anomalocardia brasiliana, the dominant and most frequent bivalve of the Brazilian coast, can be an adequate bioindicator, because it accumulates organic pollutants with reasonable sensitivity.

Notes: Abstract We reviewed our experience with spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in treating 116 patients with pain in one or both legs. All these patients were selected for an initial week of trial stimulation by the criteria: pain due to a known benign organic cause, failure of conventional pain control methods and absence of major personality disorders. Selected patients included 78 with the Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), in whom proven correlation existed between the clinical picture and the neuroradiological and electromyogram abnormallites. Eighty-four out of 116 selected patients underwent definitive SCS implantation after 1 week of trial stimulation with excellent results (more than 75% pain relief). They were followed clinically every 3 months for a mean follow-up period of 47 months. Forty-five patients (54%) continued to experience at least 50% of pain relief at the latest follow up. Seventy-seven patients (91%) were able to reduce their medication intake and 50 patients (60%) reported an improvement in lifestyle. FBSS patients responded more positively to the trial stimulation than the other patients. However, the later outcome was not affected by patient selection as long-term benefit was similar in all definitive SCS patients irrespective of aetiology.
