Notes: Fluorescence upconversion was used to measure the time evolution of the fluorescence anisotropy of aniline in three hydrocarbon, alcohol, and aprotic polar solvents. The deconvoluted anisotropy decay time of 0.94±0.05 ps in aniline/isopentane solution is only 54% longer than calculated for free rotation of collision-free molecules, and increasing the solvent viscosity by a factor of 15 by going from isopentane to hexadecane increases the rotational relaxation time by only another 70% to 1.6 ps. The extended diffusion theory applied to the aniline/isopentane anisotropy decay resulted in a collisional time of 205±15 fs, implying that electronically excited aniline in this hydrocarbon rotates on average 19.5±1.5 deg between collisions. These results indicate that the orientational motion of electronically excited aniline in isopentane is significantly nondiffusive. The anisotropy decayed much more slowly in methanol and acetonitrile than in the hydrocarbons, presumably due to dipole–dipole interactions in acetonitrile and/or hydrogen bonding interactions in the hydroxylic solvent. The anisotropy decay in methanol presented double exponential behavior, probably due either to the coexistence of two slowly interconverting aniline species (hydrogen and nonhydrogen bonded) in solution or to a fast contribution from the hydrogen-bonded aniline molecules rotating around their long axes. Free rotation, hydrodynamic models, extended diffusion, and Langevin calculations were used to evaluate the results and comparisons were made among the various approaches.

Notes: A double modulation microwave spectrometer was used to determine the linewidth parameter for some rotational components in the nν8 vibrations of methyl cyanide under 13C and 15N substitution. The linewidth parameters for self-broadening of the ΔJ=2←1 rotational components for the ground, ν8, and 2ν8 vibrations were determined over a pressure range of 1–13 mTorr and at a temperature of 300 K. An experimental method is presented to correct for modulation broadening when high derivatives are used to extract the absorption profile information from the signals. The eighth derivative profile was explored to determine if the spectral line shape remains Lorentzian over a range of modulation levels from 10% of Δν to more than 100% of Δν. These tests showed that the ratio of inner to next inner peak separations, designated in this paper as Δ, of the eighth derivative was the same as that for an assumed Lorentzian line shape. Thus, line shapes were assumed to be Lorentzian for theoretical analysis of the derivative profiles and comparisons made between experiment and theory on that basis. Dipole moments for vibrationally excited energy levels for the ν8 and 2ν8 vibrations were calculated from the linewidth parameter data after all corrections had been made for modulation, Doppler, and other nonpressure broadening effects.

Notes: Summary Experiments were carried out in conscious, unrestrained, male rats to evaluate possible interactions between brain prostanoids and the brain renin-angiotensin system in the control of vasopressin release and in cardiovascular regulation. The intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) resulted in transient increases in the plasma vasopressin concentration (PAVP) and heart rate and a gradual increase in mean arterial blood pressure (MABP). Pretreatment icv with saralasin, an angiotensin II-receptor antagonist, moderately attenuated the vasopressin response to PGD2, but had no effect on the heart rate and blood pressure responses. Angiotensin II icv increased both PAVP and MABP. This vasopressin response was almost completely prevented by prior icv meclofenamate, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, and the blood pressure response was attenuated. These observations, combined with previous studies of the role of central angiotensin II and central prostanoids in the physiological control of vasopressin release, suggest that there may be important interactions between brain prostanoids and the brain renin-angiotensin system in this control.

Notes: Abstract Three cases of severe neonatal hepatic injury were investigated with ultrasonography. The injury is often associated with antenatal factors (fetal hepatic enlargement, maternal trauma), perinatal factors (breech presentation, pre- or post-maturity, difficult delivery), or postnatal factors (resuscitation).

Notes: Abstract Data accumulated by the Solar Maximum Mission Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) have been searched for evidence of the 2.223 MeV neutron capture line from the Sun, outside the times of γ-ray-emitting solar flares. Background-corrected spectra accumulated over 3-day intervals between 1980 and 1989 show no evidence of the line. Upper limits are reported separately for periods of high and low solar activity. A conservative 3σ upper limit of 5.7 × 10−5 γ (cm2 s)−1 is placed on the steady flux in the 2.223 MeV line during inactive periods, which is nearly two orders of magnitude lower than previously published results. After correction for limb darkening of the line emission from off-center positions, this upper limit becomes 7.1 × 10−5 γ (cm2s)−1. Our 3σ upper limit on the steady flux in the line during periods of high solar activity is 6.9 × 10−5 γ (cm2 s)−1, or 8.6 × 10−5 γ (cm2 s)−1 after correction for limb darkening. Our results imply that the quiescent solar corona cannot be heated by ions accelerated above 1 MeV in microflares (or a continuous acceleration process), so long as the ion energy spectrum is similar to that measured in large flares. We also use our results to derive the rate of tritium production at the solar surface; our upper limit of 9 nuclei (cm2 s)−1 is about a factor of 9 below the upper limit from searches for 3H in the solar wind. We place upper limits of the order 1033 on the number of energetic (〉 30 MeV) protons which can be stored in active regions prior to being released in solar flares, which imply that the strongest observed flares cannot be produced by such a mechanism.

Notes: Abstract A technique which was employed earlier to calculate the rotational constants of CH3CCH has been extended to the ground and two vibrational levels in thev 8 vibration of CH3CN for several isotopic species. The moments of inertia and a computer iteration technique over experimental data for each isotopic species were employed to evaluate the constantA v in an excited vibrational state for a symmetric top molecule. This method gave good estimates forA v for each isotope. The angle of bending and the orientation of each molecular system in reference frames, one fixed on the carbon atom at the -C≡N site and the other at the center of mass, were explored. These results are discussed in this paper. The method, which was applied by Tam and Roberts to the nv10,n=1, 2, 3, 4, vibrations of CH3CCH earlier and which was extended to thev 10=1 vibration of CH3CCH with13C isotopic species, has been applied to13C isotopic species of CH3CN and seems to be a useful tool to extract the value ofA 0. Each of these molecules shows reasonable dependency ofA v over vibrational levels. Values ofA v calculated from the geometrical model are in good agreement with those obtained by fitting the terms in the frequency equations, which containedA v , to the experimental data through an iteration technique in which the value ofA was allowed to vary.
